Nerds........

So who's a nerd? Who's proud (or a little embarrassed) of their pastimes?

I love the Dune saga of books, play 4 musical instruments, read comics and wank over awesome natural history. That and I'm a kinky fucker.

Must be some nerds on here? Break out people! This is the revolution!!

I hope you don't wank over natural or archaeological history. We have enough problems trying to get accurate dating from the evidence without having a modern intrusion interfering with it

As a techie, geeky, gadget and comic book lover, guys being geeky or nerdy doesn't put me off.

There needs to be a bit more to them than the geekery, and they need some social skills but the geekness itself is a good thing, not a bad thing.

I like retro games, particularly Nintendo.

I'm currently building up a warhammer 40k necron army that will be a real pain in the arse to play against

And the batman minatures game that came out last year is gaining a lot of momentum, might try that out. It's really cheap to get started compared to a lot of table top war games.

As for hobbies well there's quite a few from country pastimes... Shooting not really geeky I know but the nerd end of the spectrum is photography , photo editing and I fly rc helicopters not the toy kind the Kind that will slice you to pieces if it hits you if not kill you! And a lot of planes also . Not the boring style scale flyin though I'm more of a hooligan flyer!! Er and tv wise it's all about science and how things work and if time team comes on my day is pretty much fucked !!

Massively into retro games but I don't play any of the modern stuff. Don't even own the current generation of consoles.

Bit sciencey, massive whovian and sci-fi nut in general, and a bit of a tech expert when I put my mind to it. But that's about it

I read an article not too long ago about how claiming to be a nerd is the new "in" thing. YouGov also did a poll about it in 2015, I think. Apparently public perception, especially by young people, is that its cool to be a nerd now. Interesting.

A few weeks ago, I had to take some blokes from work canoeing across Loch Ness.

Being totally inept at sports, I opted to drive them and set up the camps at various points around the Loch.

I didn't want to let boredom set in while I waited for them, so I purchased a ukalele, I already play guitar and piano, so I assumed that I would be able to play this thing.

By the end of the first day, I could play concerning hobbits, Eowyn's theme, misty mountains, the game of thrones intro and nothing else matters by Metallica.

Also this year I've been working on a replica Iron Man suit. At the moment I'm trying to make servos for the visor but without a 3d printer, or a lathe, it's almost impossible.

and last note, my steam acount has far too many hours invested in Kerbal Space Program.

Now don't get me wrong, i enjoyed jet set willy, manic miner and bruce lee....when they came out, but i'll be fucked if i'm gonna sit and play them now, when i can be defending my settlement from gunners in fallout 4 or shooting nien numb in the face with an E11 blaster rifle on battlefront

Because today's video games are just mini films with a bit of button pushing. Back in the day, developers actually had to focus on gameplay because they didn't have amazing graphics to work with.

Of course it takes a certain refinement of taste to appreciate what real gameplay is...

It's a natural part of industry progression. In a new market you have some small, innovative companies who do things first creative expression and not purely profit. The simple existence of them forces the big companies to up their game.

Then the industry consolidates to an oligopoly and it's all about maximising sales and profitability, creativity goes out the window. So lowest common denominator shite starts to become the norm, like 'freemium' games.

Hence why Panzer Dragoon Saga can't get a remake, despite being one of the best games ever. But you'll get a new fifa game every year without fail.

Pretty much this

So called "triple A" titles get teams of developers, programmers, artists and whole orchestras.

Some genuinely good games do still emerge. Ori and the blind forest is well worth a look.

Really? Gaming snobbery?

Says the person who just labelled all retro games "shit"

That was my opinion, to counter your air of retro superiority, but what do i know, a mere gaming neolith who bows to your appreciation of refined game play "

Neither are superior. Yes, storyline and gameplay has gone down hill recently into more experimental games and so on, and we all have our favourite games, but you still don't have to call old games shit. I still get a lot of joy replaying Oblivion and Gateway to Glimmer. Same as I get joy playing The Phantom Pain and The Wild Hunt. So just leave it and stop picking an arguement

"I don't get this trying to out geek geeks by retro gaming, there retro for a reason....they're old and shit. I'm a massive gamer, spend loads of time on my xbox, but don't want old rubbish, give me films i can play, dazzle my brain, blow my mind with fucking amazing graphics!

It's a thread for nerds!!! We're hardly going to rave about how great mainstream games are.

I love old games. My favourite is spyro

Anyway, most modern games have nothing to them. They are all generic. The only big breakthrough games I have seen lately is No Man's Sky and that basically plays like all the other open world survivor games"

You're not wrong

There's no arguement to be had. There's mithril and then there's dragons. Unless you got dragons then don't bring human weapons to a mithril fight

I have walked into Cardiff with one in all fairness, it was for a reinactment of Battle etiquette of the 14th Century for Cardiff Castle. Battle ready means blunt
