We are not English and we may get it wrong with regards to literacy but I believe that people just do not care at all about the way they write. It is definitely a turn off when people abbreviate so much it almost impossible to understand what they write.

I understand and we have not stopped in time. We understand the evolution of writing. It is mainly the fact that some people just don't care if they misspell or not. There is absolutely no effort nowadays.

I'm a sucker, for relying on my phone to do the job of spell checking as a type. And I type quite fast so after a long text, I scan over it, sometimes I ignore the odd misspelt word and hit send. I always assume anyone reading would decipher what was written. I suppose that is laziness. Im Sorry. But I don't judge others, and I don't correct when others get it wrong either.

We're not here to learn grammar. But well within our rights to ignore people who we all believe to be lazy unthought full buffoons.

Fully agree witb you on this one. We have seen some utterly dreadful messages devoid of even the most basic grammer little more than a spewimg of text speak. In most cases, messages like that will be deleted and blocked, without a second thought.

Another irritation (though not a deal breaker if we like the overall profile) are: single, large block, paragraph profiles.

As, from these, it is difficult to quickly extract key or significant information points. It is not just grammer that matters but, for profiles, compostion and structure are also neccessary considerations.

Some don't care but many have a low level of written English through no fault of their own. I think it's probably best to just avoid people you aren't compatible with and leave it at that.

I tend to shudder a bit when I read "could of" and "should of" though and some other common grammatical errors but for years I thought thank you was one word

I get what OP is on about. I didn't even take O-level English and do struggle with some aspects of grammer and spelling etc but I don't except people using that themselves as an excuse. Shouldn't you apply yourself and try to be accurate. I'm more impressed with someone who try, in everything, than those who hide behide false ignorance. If someone arrived at a meet with the same approach to personal appearance how well would that go down?

Bet the same people don't have the same attitude towards maths, let's say when working out if they've got the correct change! "Oh I'm not very good at maths, the change is close enough", no can't see that happening.

It isn't always laziness or lack of edumacashum or trying to be hip, some times it's real world physical stuff.

With us she can't spell very well and didn't have the greatest education so she asks me how to spell x, I can spell but two finger poke and hope typos abound, and the end result is her typed output is higher quality than mine with less errors.

I used to be the same with handwriting back in the day before keyboards, my head was often five words ahead of the pen.

txt sk is an interesting phenomenon given that it is 20 years since SMS was stuck at 140 characters or less and cost money to send and you only had 12 keys on the phone to get at 26 letters plus uppercase.... yet people still do it on 600 quid smartphones with free sms contracts.

When it comes to language education turns a blunt axe into a finely honed scalpel, but it does little to affect the personality of the person wielding it, just the ability of the person to communicate accurately.

What DOES piss me off is not ppl on fab who cnt spel, but people writing professional letters who STILL can't fucking spell, despite trying to charge you hundreds of pounds for their services.

I like to converse by messaging so if I can't decipher what someone has written then we're not going to get very far.

I use an iPhone which autocorrects at will & I don't always notice, so would like to think I'm not judged on the odd your & you're being incorrect but if I am then so be it ~ a case of 'you're loss'

I'm not bothered about a little abbreviation. But what aload of crap. I'd rather be a grammar snob as deliberate degeneration is ridiculous. Some people have no reason as to why they are spelling badly other than that they are so lazy to not have fixed their spelling sooner, or they just couldn't be bothered to fix some pretty major typos when reading over their messages. If that is the case then what else will they be lazy with or not bothered about? The things that you do highlight the potential workings of your inner psychology as every thought derives from another in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't prove anything for sure just on these merits alone. But it is definitely a bad sign to me when ppl cannot communicate in a pretty standard format correctly and without an excuse. Sorry. I see some really attrocious messages sometimes.

I'm more concerned about whether someone has read my profile before messaging me so if I get a well written message with perfect grammar and spelling but they have no face pics and haven't attached a face pic with their message, I'll just delete whereas someone whose message has spelling mistakes and imperfect grammar but they've attached a face pic, they're the one I'd reply to. That to me shows a lot more respect than how good their English is will ever do.

To me, good grammar and spelling is about taking pride and having attention to detail. If someone doesn't do this in their profile or message, then will they take pride in showing me a good time, and have attention to detail in their sexual performance? I would worry that a careless profile would mean a careless approach to life in general, and I certainly don't want a careless lover.

I said that I would RATHER be one (I've been called one) than a lazy person who cannot spell for toffee, and who simply doesn't care about that enough to correct it. Oh and, I will accept it, I put two t's in atrocious. This is not the kind of level of error that I am talking about. I generally don't make spelling mistakes due to auto correct. I'll sometimes like type an s instead of a etc.

But I do tend to type how I talk, I'll use, gonna, wanna, lass, ont etc. I've got a strong Yorkshire accent so that's just how things come out which is put into typing.

And some people are just fucking lazy. So calculate in your head the probability that someone sends you a shitty two sentence message that you can't understand, but is really a great meet. Then look at your other options and see if that's a good enough bet to you.

I don't mind the odd u instead of you or n instead of and. But if the whole thing is text talk and abbreviations or even if the never turn off their Cap Lock AND THEY YELL AT ME ALL THE TIME. Then yes I lose all interest and patience with them.

If I find their messages hard to read and understand I don't see why I should bother, after all most of the communication on here is written.

I guess I'm lazy and don't want to put in the hard work of translating a badly written message, but then I don't see why I should.

There is a place they have their possessions. Never start a sentence with a because but or and as they are joining words as we all know. This of a full stop as taking a breath if speaking that usually works. I before e except after c but only when the word ends in e (usually) Apostrophe's are fun as they are to denote possession or missing letters but never for plurality.

Other than auto correct making the wrong assumption and the occassional fat finger moment, I am pretty accurate with my spelling, punctuation and grammar. I'm not prideful of it. It's a by product of enjoying reading, time spent writing boring and endless dissertations along with some actually enjoyable moments of creative writing.

But I don't discount the messages that I recieve from folk that abbreviate, text speak or make errors. I can still tell what they are trying to convey to me in their message. The meaning therin is more important.

I've met with a few folk that would've no doubt had their messages deleted out of hand by what I've read of some peoples quick to judge attitudes on this thread.

I can safely say that the lack of a comma or removal of a few vowels hasn't shown any lacking in consideration and care in either their appearance, demeanour or any deficiency as a lover.

Why is ok for someone to state a preference for just about anything except for people to be able to express themselves in written communication? The only way people could pounce more is if someone mentioned the word professional.

Everyone misses the odd comma, but I'm supposed to respond to every "wat u up 2 cum siton ma dik" message because someone else who claims to be dyslexic might be offended? Bugger that.

I'll continue to be judgemental/snobbish/up myself and only fuck articulate people whose messages I can read without my brain hurting. This approach has never failed me yet.

Personally, I can easily tell the difference between someone who is foreign (my wife) or dyslexic (me) and someone who just writes a certain way by choice (half the messages we get). There just aren't that many dyslexics out there for the volume of illegible mail we get.

As a dyslexic myself, I can spot the mistakes that genuine dyslexic people make. As I say, writing 'm8' has nothing to do with dyslexia. Dyslexics are also not dumb, many of the smartest people I know are dyslexics. Most of the messages we get are clearly written by people who don't have the first clue about how to approach a couple.

So 10% are from dyslexics then, what's the excuse for the other 50%?

Read this thread with interest. I don't know a huge amount about dyslexia, but I must say I'm a bit surprised that it's been used to excuse typos, poor punctuation, bad grammar and text speak. When I was at school (many moons ago) people with dyslexia were not considered to be disadvantaged, instead systems were put in place to ensure these people had the same chances as everybody else. They were given extra time in exams because it was understood that they needed that extra time to check their grammar and spelling. It was never the _iew that dyslexic people were not capable of doing the exam to the same standard as everybody. Many dyslexic people I knew went on to university, in which a GCSE pass in English is required at the very least. In my working and personal life I continue to know people with dyslexia, who would not be doing the jobs they do if they were not capable of writing correctly. Some of my friends have told me they need a bit more time though when writing something like a report or a letter. I do except that some people might have a very severe form of dyslexia, or were unlucky enough to be diagnosed late in life therefore missed out on the necessary support. But I really question whether dyslexia should be used to excuse much of the poorly written profiles and messages on Fab.

If dyslexia is the problem, then virtually the whole population of dyslexic men are on here!!

I expect dyslexics will actually make an effort.

In truth most of the guys just don't seem to care!!

Typos are typos and wholly forgivable. My autocorrect makes some odd choices on my behalf. I'm personally not a fan of certain colloquialisms, phrases and text speak but that doesn't mean I would discount someone purely because their messages contained them. If they consisted of nothing but it would be different since maybe we're just not compatible (or I am just too old).

I agree. It's similar to how somebody made a joke in a thread the other day about most single men on here being border line autistic, to explain their lack of social skills. Now I have Asperger's and I sort of foundd it funny and sort of didn't. So I empathise with dyslexics a certain extent but I hope people wouldn't use it as an excuse. Having Asperger's causes the occasional issue with swinging but I wouldn't use it as an excuse, as with any aspect of my life.

Will probably get shit for this but there goes.
