"Imagine a thread decicated to inumeracy, along the lines of 'fuck maths lol! I LOVE being the thickest idiot in the room!' Now replace that with compassion. Congratulations! This thread! And the funny thing is, most of the meat eaters will at some point sign the petition against the dog meat trade in china, because it's soooo cruel, and they couldn't imagine something so awful happening to their ickle pet doggie ralphie. Meat eaters are some of the biggest hippocrites on the planet, I have lost count of the times I have heard meat eaters call themselfes 'animal lovers'. What do they mean by that? The meat industry is destroying our planet, it creates a huge poverty divide, it exploits the poorest communities, lol bacon. It is beyond cruel to rape an animal to induce pregnancy, steal the babies (lamb, veal) and keep the survivors in cramped conditions for the remainder of their lives until their bodies are spent (eggs, dairy), buuuuuut Iiiiit taaaaastes niiiiice (so do mushrooms for fucks sake, eat them instead) Factory farming is literally an incubator for superbugs, hundreds and thousands of animals packed into filthy conditions pumped full of antibiotics and pushed into the human population, but how. Fucking. DARE. a vegan say anything against your personal choice that could literally cause the next worldwide plague? And anyway, it's pointless arguing with a meat eater, as so many will openly admit that what they are doing IS cruel, and it IS unnecessary, and it IS avoidable, buuut, the vegan is arguing in a tone you don't like, and that's more important, they didn't humbly beg you to be compassionate in the right way. "Stop bricking cats? I see your point, it is awful, but you didn't say 'pretty please'. " I saw you bitch and grind down the last two vegans. Aint letting you turn veganism into a topic where the vegans don't get to have a voice." Sorry to piss on your parade but vegans and vegetarians are the biggest hypocrites in the world and it is very simple to prove. What person, other than yourself, means more to you than anyone else on this planet and you can't bear the thought of being without? Don't worry, I'm not going to say them or an animal.

"As an animal lover, I eat meat. If everyone gave up eating meat there would be a lot less animals in the world... I see nothing here that even consideres animals at all. Farm animals would only be found in zoos, except zoos would be banned... So a part from a few people keeping them as pets, there would be no pigs, cattle, sheep etc... And? You think it's pity and compassion that compels you to eat animals? How would you control the rabbits and deer that are destroying the crops? You don't need to. Just stop killing their natural predators. How would you control numbers to stop them getting to the point where animals are starving to death? Gee, nature, how do you cope without humans? Some vegans are happy to live their lifestyle in peace and answer questions with a sound reasoning but unfortunately there are others who hate anyone that doesn't agree with them and need to punctuate their argument with insults... If the reasoning is sound, then just go vegan. And a disagreement is nothing compared to having your throat slit, which meat eaters pay for. I doesn't matter what animals people eat as long as it it treated well and killed humainly... You can't kill an animal that is healthy, in the prime of its life, and call it humane. It isn't. Humane is something you do to a suffering animal, not to a sandwich ingredient. "

You don't solve human stupidity with more human stupidity. B) it's as humane as a baby dying suddenly in a violent incident, like getting shot or decapitated in a car crash. Literally the only humane way to kill is to alleviate suffering - euthanasia for the terminaly ill. If it's not humane to do it to a person, it's not humane. C) most big animals are killed by a bolt to the head in abbetoirs reaking of death, and chickens are put on decapitating conveyer belts. They know whats coming, they can see it and smell it, and it is insane to call that humane. Worried about animal populations? Let nature do its thing, it's always better than interfering.

" Worried about animal populations? Let nature do its thing, it's always better than interfering. " There wouldn't be as many animals like cows and pigs anyway if they wasn't forced bred, animals are bred at an unnatural rate to produce food for our tabels A cow is bred and the calf taken away and then she's bred again that just wouldn't happen if nature took its course as she wouldn't mate so soon after birth People who worry about cows and pigs over taking the world if we didn't eat them because they produce millions of young a years, fear not because they wouldn't breed at that rate without us interfering

"I've got a lot of respect for people who decide what they are comfortable with and then do it, vegans included. I don't have much respect for people who constantly ram that thing down others' throats or use it as a way of making themselves out to be morally superior. Everyone chooses their things to care about. You can't care about everything. If you're a vegan who drives a car or goes on lots of foreign holidays then you're contributing to global warming. If you're a vegan with children you're contributing to overpopulation. If you're a vegan who uses body scrubs with microbeads you're contributing to the destruction of various forms of marine life. All of these things have implications for the world around us including its animal populations, just as my decision to eat meat does." Now you're properly back. I was going to start a thread about microbeads last night but it was a bit tense on here. Waitrose is removing all products that contain them from September. They have already removed them from their own products.

"It's a shame that threads on these subjects never seem to go well but I'm not sure if that is a success or not." I find it disheartening that people fail to debate as adults and we end up with repetitious posts from quite polarised points of the discussion with no room for anything else.

I am one because I don't like the treatment of factory farmed animals - not because I don't like eating other sentient beings. I have been thinking a lot lately about my own hypocrisy - because I don't eat meat I have effectively removed myself from the vote on how animals raised for food are treated. For this reason I have been giving a lot of thought to eating meat again after over 14 years without (albeit only meat farmed in ethical ways - a way for me to vote with my ££). Anyway, that's a long-winded way of saying that there are choices we make regarding the treatment of animals that are more important than whether we eat them or not. Things like consumer products (microbeads in this case) are, in my opinion, one of those more important things. Anyone who truly cares about animals cares about all of those factors. You're right that we can't care about everything, but we can each care just enough about a number of things.

Beheading a puppy is bad. With me so far? Beheading a chicken is bad. Why not? How is that not completely evil? How is it not disgusting and inhumane to raise millions of animals as products? But of course, I'm a super awful person for giving a shit that your meals were once struggling for life, no doubt your low opinion of me for being against all forms of animal cruelty is justified. I honestly don't need to be interrogated by a meat eater. So silly! What on earth gave you the impression that you are someone I answer to??? The anger is incredibly obvious - I, like other vegans, find the waste of life horrifying. All the circumstances to go with it - polluting the immediate enviroment, destroying ecosystems, torturing innocents. For what? Sandwiches and shoes? Selfish, and stupid. Not enough to feel angry about? How about dedicating your life to non-violence, then being compared to ISIS. How about two threads where people like you chat utter shit about people like me? Still nothing to be angry over? Why are YOU so angry? What are the actions I take that you find so morally reprehensible that you need to attack and belittle over two threads? Was your best friend a carrot? No, you just can't stand an opinion that isn't yours, and you try to stamp it out. Tough. I think your actions are cruel, I think you are cruel for participating in the greatest evil our species is capable of. Want proof? Imagine eating a baby burger, or a puppy burger. THAT'S hypocrisy, the outright speceisism that makes no logical sense - we treat pets nice, but not farm animals. That would be the definition of hypocrisy.

"Stop bricking cats? I see your point, it is awful, but you didn't say 'pretty please'. " I saw you bitch and grind down the last two vegans. Aint letting you turn veganism into a topic where the vegans don't get to have a voice. Sorry to piss on your parade but vegans and vegetarians are the biggest hypocrites in the world and it is very simple to prove. What person, other than yourself, means more to you than anyone else on this planet and you can't bear the thought of being without? Don't worry, I'm not going to say them or an animal. I dare say that just like every dingle postII've seen from you on yhis thread that you're going to try to chat bollocks at me. Not happening cow-muncher. Why the anger? If you are not a hypocrite you have nothing to fear in answering the question and the simple conundrum that will follow. If you are a hypocrite, which you will be, then you wont answer. Either way you are proving me right For the record. I couldn't care what diet people choose to live by. What I do not like is the self righteous attitude of a minority trying to tell those of us with a natural human diet that we are all the scum of the earth. " I see no difference in eating a puppy or a kitten than eating a cow or a lamb, I would however draw the line at a baby. I live in a house of vegans and find the ridiculing of them bewildering.

If an animal is like a rabbit or a deer is grazing and a second later it's dead, that is human. Unlike letting number grow until the animals are starving due to over population... A) It's not either or, until stupid humans get involved and either kill off all the natural predators or introduce an animal into a new habitat. " Just a couple of points - I'm not going to rehash what others have said. I think there is some confusion over the term "humane" generally, amongst everyone, from meat eaters to vegans. Humane does not mean "how you would behave towards another human (although, lets' be fair, humans are prtty vile to each other at times), it purely means acting in a manner that requres forethought and consideration (Homo sapiens - the thinking hominid). A) You couldn't have any kind of food production, ebven the most yoghurt-waeving permaculturally harmonious whatever without altering the enviroment, and there aint enough wild food to support all the humans on the planet. B)No, it isn't. See:above on "humane". We consider death and try to do it in the quickest manner possible. Currently, I believe carbon monoxide is the great hope in the future of livestock slaughter. C)I have no experience of chicken slaughter so can't comment (apart from killing my own birds), Abbotiors in this country are quite well designed and have vets on hand, whether the animals know it is coming is debateable, but possible. The bit about "nature doing it's thing" is an intersting one though. Nature herself deals out horrific deaths full of suffering and pain. Ever seen African wild dogs kill their prey on telly? Ever met a crow? Incapacitate yourself on the open for any length of time and those beautiful creations of nature will eat your eyes and then your lips and your tongue... Humanity to me, is giving a merciful death, one with less suffering than nature offers and yeah, I hope I have a quick death too, but humans are shit at letting that happen, they like you to die slowly in a hospital.

"Rape" of animals is quite subjective, unless you mean that all births by AI are rape? When I put the ram in with the ewes, they really don't have to stand for him if they don't want. I'm not on hand to force them to shag! Also: is rape a human construct? Have you ever seen wild ducks mating? If they were people, I would say that it is basically gangrape with added attempted drowning, but they aint people and to describe it as this is rather anthropomorphic, being as it is what ducks do. What about mantises? Even dogs ffs, dog sex looks hideous (if you are going to say that dogs are domesticated you may substitute "dog" for "wolf" if you choose). You may have a point with veal, but lambs are not babies anymore. They are weaned when they don't need the milk anymore - I try to wean mine in the next field so they can still see mum. Some of the lambs make a fuss, but the ewes seem glad not to be pestered anymore (you'll often see a ewe kicking her lamb in late summer/autumn, weaning it herself). If I remember correctly, human babies make quite a fuss when they are weaned too. A lot of the information on farming produced by vegan friendly groups seems to use examples of industry practises banned in Europe (America has one of the worst animal welfare regulatory structures on the planet). Prpohylactic use of antibiotics has mostly been phased out because the superbugs are also of concern to those producing the animals. High mortalities are never desirable. Hormone treatments are illegal in the EU.

Humanity to me, is giving a merciful death, one with less suffering than nature offers and yeah, I hope I have a quick death too, but humans are shit at letting that happen, they like you to die slowly in a hospital. " I don't think I'm confused about the term humane at all - I think I was very articulate. I'm not saying treat animals like people - chickens don't need to sit GCSE's. But you obviously are aware of pets - and the general consensus is you don't put a legal thy dog down. That isn't confusing, is it? A humane death considers the animal. Is it humane to kill a healthy dog? Nope. Is it humane to euthanise a terminally ill dog that is suffering greatly? Of course it is. There is nothing confusing there at all, except why people think humane means different things for different species. Humane to send a healthy lamb to the slaughter house? On what planet does that sound logical? A) obviously, not now there isn't, but I care less about feeding 7billion people than I do about keeping every other species off the brink of extinction. We're ingenious, we can grow crops on sky scrapers without even using soil, just nutrient dense sprays. At some point we'll be forced to do it anyway, so I don't see a problem - especially if this is a pro-meat argument. If we can't feed people off what we have with just crops, how can we possibly sustain meat, which eats more crops, and takes up land itself? B) see above, and re-evaluate your interpretation of 'humane'. C) it isn't 'debatable', they're on a conveyer belt, they can see it happening. I'm sure you're petrified of anthropomorphisation, but does it make sense to assume a chicken watching all the other chickens n front of it having their heads sawed off won't assume it will be next in line? Yep, nature is horrific, but nature is also pretty balanced, and while a pray animal suffers a gruelling death, it's better to let a predator do it, than wipe out the predators, then cull the pray because it might starve, and watch an entire area get decimated with extinction after extinction. We have a history of completely fucking up ecosystems, time to stop. Time to stop assuming we are the solution, when we're the biggest problem since the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Hormone treatments are illegal in the EU. " Seeing as you're so interested in the concept of rape being exclusively human, why not look up dragonfly mating behaviour - it shits on duck mating. Females evolve to look like males as sex is so brutal the survival rates for females is really low. You think rams are begging for you to inseminate them? Their case is utterly hopeless, how could you presume that they want endless pregnancies? Yep, another 'nature is brutal' point - but are you gong to condone doing it? Are you going to kill all the babies in your area, like a lion? Are you going to rip up and eat the nearest rival group, like a chimp? Do you need endless lists of animal behaviours you do not engage in? Sounds just diversionary to me. I don't se how ducks fucking is somehow a green light for humans factory farming dairy cows. 'Some of the lambs make a fuss', what, they get upset when you remove them from their mothers? Gee, I wonder why. You are another level of evil, to see all of that first hand, to do it. And to say they aren't lambs because they aren't weaned - I'm sorry, but most mammals stay with their mothers after weaning, they are still babies, look at humans, would you say we're grown up after weaning? Do humans give up their kids once off the tit? Cognative dissonance. I've heard of farmers go vegan - it is never to late to see that life matters. Never too late to look in their eyes and see the desire to live without harm.

"You've belittled vegans through two threads before I made a single comment - you clearly DO have a problem with vegans, but you think you should be able to chat shit about us, without rebuttal, without being held account for your attitude. I don't see hypocracy on my part, at all. Give an example, or I'll assume you're using words you don't understand. I'm not ranting about being judged - I'm ranting that I don't condone animal abuse. Your ranting is semantics - vegan rantings are about murder disguised as 'personal preferences'. You CAN live without cruelty. You SHOULD live without cruelty. I am married to a meat eater, we have cats, yes they are fed meat, no I would not have got cats otherwise, are you now holding me responsible for the actions of others? " So surely you are compromising your beliefs if you live with a meat eater? If you felt that strongly, surely you would put your beliefs / lifestyle choice before a relationship? Time to stop assuming we are the solution, when we're the biggest problem since the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs." I find this response quite disappointing as you have clearly not read half of what I have written, or if you have, you have failed to understand it. Fistly, I do not inseminate the sheep (in spite of the rumours). The ram does. A male sheep is a ram, a female sheep is a ewe. The ram inseminates the ewes (you seemed unclear on this part). The only role I play is putting him in the same field as the ewes. Sheep mate once a year, the ewes come into heat at which point they "stand" for the ram. They will not accept him until they are in heat. Also, you seem to have created a strawman using a dog. A straw-dog, if you will. A)You seem to have not digested anything I had written about food production and still seem to be accepting as fact the very broad sweep sttement that meat production is bad for the environment and/or consumes more resources than it generates. I have goven some examples where you are correct (cattle - and actually pigs too for the most part) and some where you are not (upland sheep/goat production - you couldn't produce anything else on that land). The same could also be said for crop production, sometimes it is bad for the environment - see: the vast cereal 'dseserts' here and elswhere in the world. We are losing topsoil at an alarming rate (although this is starting to be addressed). As I stated, I think a lot of answers to the protien for human consumption conundrum are to be found in the production of insects and fish. B)No, you haven't changed my mind on that front. C)Once again you didn't read. I said I have no idea about poultry. If they are on a conveyor belt you probably have a point. My point about the animals knowing that death was coming was to do with the slaiughter of other animals. I've been to abbotoirs. There is one, incidentally near Basingstoke that has a viewing chamber so that memebers of the public can go and watch the process.

" 'Some of the lambs make a fuss', what, they get upset when you remove them from their mothers? Gee, I wonder why. You are another level of evil, to see all of that first hand, to do it. And to say they aren't lambs because they aren't weaned - I'm sorry, but most mammals stay with their mothers after weaning, they are still babies, look at humans, would you say we're grown up after weaning? Do humans give up their kids once off the tit? Cognative dissonance. I've heard of farmers go vegan - it is never to late to see that life matters. Never too late to look in their eyes and see the desire to live without harm." Once again, you seem to have read a sentence and made a point around that without reading and understanding the rest of what I had written. Yes, the lambs make a fuss when I put them in the next field. The ewes by and large, don't. I noted that by this time, the ewes were often attempting to waen their lambs themselves. I went on to say that human babies also make a fuss when you wean them. My daughter was taken off the breast when she was one and made a hell of a fuss about it. I don't think her mother was cruel for weaning her though. Humans donlt give up their children when they are weaned, but we wean our offspring very early. Which brings me to my next point; they are not "lambs" by the time that they are sent on (a couple of months after weaning) because a lamb is a juvenile sheep and by the time they are six months old, sheep are sexually mature.

I haven't compared you to ISIS or called you an extremist - I know quite a few vegans. I do, however take issue with a lot of your points about nature and the environment, and assume that you are adult enough to argue your point. I stated right from the beginning that the "death" argument was personal to the individual and I don't see any point in discussing it, any discussion I have had with vegan friends always boils down to a fundamental difference of opinion: They are not okay with something dying for their dinner and I am. I don't criticise them for it, its a viewpoint I admire, they (like me) realise that death is involved with meat production and have considered it at length (as have I). I do tend to take slight umbrage with vegetarians making the same point, because of all the livestock sectors, the dairy sector is the one I have the most problem with, ethically. Seems illogial that they should choose to only consume products from that industry sector. I have even more of a problem with the man or woman on the street who consumes meat in neat little packages and never considers where it comes from or what it is.

" That last sentence is particulalry telling. You seem to understand very little about food production - you didn't even know what a male and female sheep were called. At no piint in theis thread have I thrown personal insults at you, but you have at me. I have discussed the environemtal issues in this thread with people (vegan and non) who do have a crasp of the the complexity of the issues involved, I know plenty of prople who work in environemtal protection from my uni days. None of them cling to your mantra that all meat production uses more resources than all crop production. Feeding humanity is an incredibly complex question and vast plant monoculture is no more the answer than beef production is. Nature thrives on the interaction between plants and animals, so a lot of the current thinking is that a lot of the most environmentally sound production systems are incredibly local (communal almost) and involve a careful integration between plants and animals, where nothing is wasted, which includes the meat. Think: permaculture etc...

If you feel so strongly about the treatment of animals you would not let your partner eat meat. I bet he wears leather too. You would not willingly feed your cats meat either. But lets really test you. Your partner is seriously ill and unable to sign a form of consent for the only medicine that is guaranteed to cure and restore him to full health. The medicine is only available and known to work because it was extensively tested on animals. 100s of which died long, drawn out painful deaths. If you don't sign the form your partner will die a long painful and drawn out death. Do you sign the form or watch your partner die?
