"Switch between AA & RAC each year never pay more than £70 certainly never pay the £120+ renewal jokers " That is what I usually do. I paid £120 last year as I needed to be covered for driving any car. I still have to receive my free £30 of petrol which I have queried with the AA.

"Have tried most of them over the years but by far the best for price and service has been thw cover we had through Insurance Choice. They use a network of local firms. With my old car, which was forever breaking down, they always had someone to us within an hour, kept us ipdated by text etc and always tried to get us back on the road. Renewal price was fixed too, so never any haggling needed. Last time I looked their top range cover was about £60. Mr G" That is excellent value , however I need cover for any vehicle .

"I don't bother. I have friends with recovery vehicles and rarely travel far." The cheapest cover assuming your friends do not let you down.

I forget if they do any vehicle cover, but worth a call to them - whenever I called they bent over backwards to help and weren't just some mindless and bored call centre agent reading from a script. "I have always found the AA to be the best of the breakdown companies but also the most expensive . When it comes to renewal it is always nececessary to negotiate a price and sometimes they will not reduce it to a sufficiently competitive level. My aim is always to pay the same price as a new member . I include both home start and recovery . Which company are you with and what is your experience ? How many do not bother with breakdown cover ? I had a broken spring recently which wrecked a tyre. It was convenient to have recovery insurance as I was able to be taken to the destination of my choice. Having said that , I have paid for recovery for eight years and never used it . Both my cars are new so I don't have to add breakdown insurance as part of my insurance cover the Toyota has Toyota Roadside Assistance and they use the AA I am not sure who Mercedes use but there is a red emergency button overhead in the cab, if you get into trouble you press the button and Mercedes speak to you over the phone intercom and arrange what ever is required, good job it has a clear cover over it that you have to remove before pressing" Oooh! I want a big red button!!

"I think I paid £60 for recovery bundled with my insurance - it was certainly cheaper that way over a separate policy as I couldn't believe how expensive it was even through comparison sites." I found mine was more expensive if I did that.

"Because of the soaring price of insurance itself and various other household necessities, that's one of the voluntary expenses that's gone by the wayside now. " I understand that, but what if you do breakdown at various time's isn't that going to be more expensive in the long run?

Never broken down before in over 20 years of driving. VW have never let me down.

I bought my car and house in the month of August so it's a bugger of a month for paying out for stuff, school uniform etc and I've never claimed on any insurance, but my car is getting old now and have used breakdown recently when my exhaust fell off! I think it's just the worry incase something does happen it's peace of mind isn't it. Insurance is there for a reason, because we know it'll be a damn sight more expensive if something does happen!

"We've never had breakdown insurance Have you ever broken down ?" We had to be towed once. To be honest, it wasn't that expensive. If I put all the money Marc and I would have paid to breakdown insurance over the years (he has been driving over 10 years) in the bank, which I effectively have, then I've come out better having not paid it and just paying for the tow. I get the point of insurance. I just don't think I need it for breakdown coverage. It won't hit me (and someone else) in the bank the same way an accident might.

"I had mine with The green insurance company and this year's quote was £68,shopped around and for the same with 2Gether Motor Breakdown it's £35. The test if it's any good will be when/if I break down!" Green Insurance company £17 a year!! Needed to use them a couple of times and they were great. Came out within an hour.

"We had to be recovered 5 hours drive from (Dartford to Leeds) a couple of weeks ago the guy said it would have cost over £500 if we haven't had the insurance. That may be an overestimate I have no idea but I was glad we didnt have to worry about it." O would say that is a fairly accurate estimate considering the distance involved .
