Dalian Atkinson

Reports say that he died after being tasered by police.

He was a footballing hero of mine, playing for Aston Villa just as I started to get into football.

While details are still unclear, to me he was a great football player and an Aston Villa legend.

My favourite Dalian Atkinson related story....

While manager of Birmingham City, Ron Atkinson convinced chairwoman Karen Brady that Dalian was his son.

Great footballer.

Standard procedure, apparently he wasn't well, certainly seems like overreacting by the police

Reports I read he was trying to break into his father's house either high on drugs/alcohol or both. His father barricaded hhimself in and called the police. He was still kicking off when they arrived and they tasered him.

From what I'm reading it doesn't appear the police overreacted, but we won't know the full story yet.

It raises the question of police using tasers, In most circumstances surley a few police Men can overcome and detain people before using a taser gun,

(I don't know the circumstances in this case)

In an ideal world yes, but an individual who really does not want to be detained or overcome can put up a hell of a struggle/fight.

Don't know the facts obviously but I'm just meaning in general terms.

Very rare with all the police cuts that there are 2 or 3 burly policemen sent to an incident. It's often a lone officer who is just praying they get to go home to their family at the end of shift. Sometimes it's just a no win situation.

It is obvious that tasters are not safe and there have been a fe deaths from them that weren't publicised. Now someone famous has died hopefully something will be done,we can't have a portable electric chair in the hands of the police...can we?

Why should they risk their lives? They have the option to subdue, without risk to themselves. Most folk can take a taser with no real percussion. They warn first. He chose to ignore the warning. Most people wouldn't have spared a thought for the story if it was Joe blogs.

The eyewitness claims that they were kicking him taking turns until one of them said that's enough now. She also claims that they tazed him at least 4 times so i would class this as an overreaction although to be fair you admit that we don't know the full yet.

I'm with you. Clearly very dangerous, as this story shows

Still we seem to be in the minority. Most seem to think it's fair enough police action ends with someone dead

Well it probably goes without saying I'm with you. Things have got out of hand now and no doubt exaggeration and lies will be pushed as a means of justification. When you hear the lady who gave the eyewitness account you may shudder. For the people making a joke of it we'll see the humour when it's someone in your family

Very sad, and even sadder that a guy who played top level football for ten years ended up on that estate! The money certainly didn't do him much good

I don't know the circumstances, How many offices involved etc,

Fair enough when people have weapons or putting peoples lives in danger but in a lot of cases I recon the police take the easy option

That is an unconfirmed report, it was one eyewitness whose story was not collaborated by any other eyewitness, of which there where many, I think we should exercise a little caution, the IPCC investigate any police force or officer that deploys the taser so their involvement is nothing more than routine.

The reasons why the police where called to the address in the first place and the subsequent actions of all the individuals involved will be fully investigated, for me it's a massive shame and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

I want to remember his goal against Wimbledon that was voted goal of the season by Match of the Day viewers and the celebration with the villa fan with the umbrella, pure class.

R.I.P
