Does it need to be plugged into the mains all the time and if not if it's powered by the TV USB is its performance slower ?

It's hdmi plugs into tv and gets 5 volts power from tv's electrical system

If it's been designed right, it should run on the 5 volts that the USB port provides.

I would imagine that, you would use the external charger on a device (laptop, tablet etc) that runs on a battery. It would drain a battery fairly quickly.

Runs though hdmi but would suggest a fast speed Internet speed.
