Washing line [wow-shin-loin] is a term used in the Black Country to describe a simple mechanical device that assists natural air agitation in washed clothing, with the aim of decreasing the amount of time for the garment to become dry.

Other terms, such as "drying line", are considered irrelevant in the United Kingdom, as it always rains, rendering the device useless.

Most people that use a washing line cannot afford to use a tumble dryer, a much more effective way of reducing the water content of washed garments. I am one of these people, and I pronounce it [was-shin lying]

Haverfordwest

Because originally, clothes were securely attached to a length of rope and taken to a river to wash in the deeper, cleaner water, still attached and retrieved like a fisherman retrieves his fishing line, by pulling it. It was a crude method and the inexperienced washer women would lose the occasional piece of clothing from not fastening it to the rope securely. Then it was a case of hanging the line up at some high points on a tree or wall in order to dry the washing. Over time, with more complex clothing and fashion demanding more complex methods of washing, the line method of washing became unpopular, but the line drying method remained a favourite to the tumble dryer was invented.
