No I don't mean bad language, just the use of English. "wanna meet tonite?" "looking for sum fun" is it just me that finds it annoying?

Depends on their age. It's a habbit that some people who would be 28 - 34 picked up when text messages were limited to 180 characters and charged at 10p each.

However some people thought it looked cool (it doesn't) and copied it from them. So I judge it's appropriateness by the age of the writer.

Well, I'd write "see me" at the bottom of your test paper.

They've had plenty of time to unlearn it now though. The youth of today still do this and worse. You wouldn't believe how many type "cunt" instead of couldn't... even on school coursework.

The English language can be a beautiful thing if used correctly.

Pet peeves:

'Are' instead of 'our'

'Could of', 'should of', 'would of'

'Yous', or worse 'use', instead of 'you'

'Alot' or 'upto'

I could go on for hours...

The 'discrete' thing makes me laugh too. What, you're individually separate and distinct?

I'm a lover of words.

'Lol' causes me some cringing but it seems to have slipped into something more distinguished and made itself at home in the English language.

In order to appreciate language, we somehow may have to remember that language evolves.

Like broken biscuits can be tasty, slovenly spoken syllables seem to have their place I think.

Indeed. "Gonna" or "gunna" seems to have replaced "going to". Sloppy maybe, but we all do it.

I've done it.

Typed gonna.

I'm thinking it's okay as the rest of the time I'm very uptight.

For me it depends on the degree of it. On the face of it I see it as lazy and disrespectful to the potential audience but then we should not judge people on their command of the English language. Just because someone's level of education is not necessarily as well as that of others it shouldn't preclude people from taking part in written conversation. They will still have valid points of view and contribution.

Having said that, if some lovely female wrote to me saying "you wanna meet", I'm not going to turn her down on the basis of her grammar

I do detest txt speak though.

I like to read messages which are correctly structured in respect of their punctuation and grammar.

That said I sometimes tap the wrong key on my phone and then press send prior to proof reading. I am confident that my phone should word process what I want it to say rather than producing the letters on the keys that I have pressed.

I blame all this new fangled technology which predicts what it thinks I wanted to say. All things considered without spelling, punctuation and grammar where are we?

And another thing I don't understand are emotional icons. When the sender and receiver have different interpretations. As the old saying goes 'a lack of communication often leads to frustration'.

You missed 'Pacific' instead of 'specific'. It's a fookin' ocean for the love of all that is holy.

It depends.

I was taught to txt by teenagers when I finally buckled down and accepted my work mobile.

I figure English isn't preserved in aspic but is fluid. The important thing is - and never mind spelling or txt spk - did the person get their message across clearly or are they just a dumb fuck?

And if they are a dumb fuck, are they fit?

As I say, it depends.

Very - make exception. Not - instant block.

Just thought I'd finish your decision tree for you.

No, that was just the one. And he was very fit and coherent. He just failed to disclose relevant info in the pre-trial hearing.

I did tell him to fuck off tho'.

On here I will type "ma" & "yer" cos that's how I speak. If I'm typing an official letter however, I'll type "my" & "your", because it's more professional like innit
