I think we need a greater range of smileys.

How about a tongue in cheek one. Or an ironic one. Or a sardonic one. Or an insouciant one.

I detest smileys.

I used to use the old emoticons many years ago.

At least they were acceptable to adults.

The emoticons here make me feel as if five year olds are writing the messages.

Let me put it another way.

I think we need a greater range of smileys he said with his tongue firmly in his cheek and a soupcon of irony.

More smileys would lead to shorter and even more incomprehensible posts.

Some folks work on the assumption that a picture paints a thousand words and substitute a smiley for what they think they ought to be saying.

Equally, it may simply be that they don't have the vocabulary to express themselves fully. Or it might just be laziness.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

On A.N.Other site I use, a member who had mild learning difficulties upset a lot of people because he didn`t use a single smiley and his style of writing didn`t carry over what he was trying to say. When I explained to him what he doing he saw the "problem".

Smillies are fun and the correct choice of just one smiley can make a whole load of difference to how the post is intended to come over e.g a "whistling" one for toungue-in-cheek comments.

That can be the problem though, can't it? "the correct choice of just one smiley" Is there a hard and fast definition of what each and every smiley means and does everyone know, understand and accept that definition?

I doubt it and the more smileys you add to a forum the more opportunities there are for misunderstanding.

If you can`t understand the difference between and perhaps you have the same problems as the guy I was describing earlier in my post.

You`ll notice that I haven`t finished the above sentence with a smiley and it could be taken two completely different ways depending on if I was joking or serious.

I'm gonna stop using smilies if it will make me feel better than thou.

Darn it, I can't use a smiley to express my tone here now I've said that.

I have to admit I hardly ever think about the smileys. I will attach a smiley at the end of a post, but it usually doesnt mean anything, its just to give a bit of yellow (or green) colour to the typed word. I usually go for or , no real thought goes into it, its whatever my hand clicks at the time

Emoticons are also used to mask intent. It appears to me people don't realise how vitriolic and acerbic some posts are because there's a smiley at the end of it...oh, or a "lol"!
