I'm giving blood for the first time on Friday , I have a rare blood group so decided to start donating. Does anyone else donate regular and what to expect please X

It's fairly painless...

a pale looking chap will silently, approach you from behind and quickly sink his fangs into your

soft neck.

Mrs P regularly donates.

I don't as they have difficulty locating my veins and when they do I can't stop bleeding.

I've never had a problem giving blood. Always been courteous to me, and I admire you for wanting to start.

There really isn't anything to worry about.

Simple enough process,

They drain some blood from you, sit you down afterwards with something sugary to drink or eat.

After 5-10 mins you'll be ok to leave

I haven't donated for a bit but if nothing much has changed they will do a prick test (quiet at the back) on your thumb, you will lay on a bed while your blood is taken. After you rest with a drink and snack. Don't plan anything strenuous that day and eat before. Good luck

I used to try on a regular basis to donate blood but there were always reasons I couldn't...in the end I was able to donate only once. At the time I was warned of low blood pressure and was almost not able to donate even then. Anyway, it got to be too much effort to keep getting turned down.

The one time I did donate was rather painless, though. Lots of juice and cookies and stuff. I'm also terrified of blood so they were kind about that as well.

I've been about 90 times. It is a relatively painless process. I always say that the worst bit is removing the plaster after. Of course, there will be a little pain (sharp scratch) when they put the needle in but you can make it even less if you give a small cough as they are just inserting it (coughing somehow interrupts the pain nerve signals). Then you just lie there for about 10 mins doing some muscle clenching. After if is over you can relax with a drink and make your next appointment. After a week or 2 they now text you saying which hospital your donation has been sent to for use.

I donate because I have a rare blood type to. The worst bit for me is it takes ages for the blood to come out. I have to roll a tissue in my hand to help the flow. I think it took 14 mins last time.

When I worked in lloyds tsb business centre it was on an industrial estate and the blood bank would come around. You'd get an hour paid off work and a biscuit to give blood so I did it once. I've got O- blood which I think they said is the useful blood cos anybody can have it like newborn babies and accident and emergency departments have it. There's loads of forms and questions that are quite personal that you need to answer first and after I did feel a bit light headed but I've got low blood pressure.
