From full-blown hair metal guitar wank to viruoso acoustic doodlings, what's your favourite guitar solo?

Currently I love the understated acousitic solo in the Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "landslide"...

Some competent guitarists mentioned but none of them can hold a candle to the ease of Steve Howe's acoustic play.

Have a listen to 'The Clap'https://youtu.be/1KN2qvtosmM

And for something a little more showy have a watch of Luca Stricagnoli play 'Sweet child of Mine' it puts slash to shame. https://youtu.be/Ok5d8nXAngw

"

I could have gone for Andrés Segovia but I thought that a classical guitarist spending an hour or so on a classical guitar doing what the 'great' 'rock guitar gods' need amplification and a floor full of effects pedals to manage a couple of minutes of would just be a bit over the top.

"Brothers in arms - Dire straits. "

Mark Knopfler doesn't play the guitar, he makes it sing! What an incredibly powerful track that is!

I was campaigning to get this re-released a few years back in aid of Help for hero's but it got no interest from the record company

My favourite has to be "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes.

If we're talking bass guitar then it's Fleetwood Mac "The chain"

Just East of Wakefield

How about someone who's a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist (see last comment), song-writer, producer, singer

Dave Edmunds, have a listen on YouTube to the Love Sculpture rendition of 'Sabre Dance' (11 minutes, or so, as full length version)

Maybe better known for trackslike; 'Queen Of Hearts', 'Singing The Blues', 'Girls Talk'

Multi-instrumentalist

On his 'Subtle As A Flying Mallet' LP (circa 1971), he performed it in a Phil Spector tribute

Again, on YouTube, listen to (ie;) his version of 'Born To Be With You'

Actually he never said that.

He was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world. He replied "I wouldn't know, I'm maybe the best guitarist in this chair" over the years it's been twisted and various guitar players have been named. Rory just happens to be the most popular one.

No denying it though, he was fucking incredible.

Sylvia or Hocus Pocus by Focus (playing Bristol soon.. tempted to go see them)

Whisky in the Jar Thin Lizzy

Too many to mention from Jimmy Page.

Something many people don't realise is that Purple Rain was mostly a live recording with a few edits and additions of strings and keys. Most of the solo was improvised.

Here's a fantastic instrumental version of Purple Rain by John Petrucci....

We also have to thank him for revolutionizing the Electric guitar and he also invented multi-track recording.

"The best solo I've ever heard in terms of really adding something to the song is purple rain.

Awesome.

Something many people don't realise is that Purple Rain was mostly a live recording with a few edits and additions of strings and keys. Most of the solo was improvised.

Here's a fantastic instrumental version of Purple Rain by John Petrucci....

https://youtu.be/hJ9WB4l-yWU"

Fantastic!

"A lot of mentions for Comfortably Numb but, if David Gilmour ever had a finest moment among many) it would have to have been Time on Dark Side of the Moon or Hey You from The Wall."

I'd say the solo for dogs or even fat old sun were better than both of those solos. Yet time is one of my favourite floyd tracks. Says something when I can recite the lyrics in 30 seconds.

Not sure how I forgot this one. It's regularly cited as one of the finest live performances of the 80's. The Van Halen brothers are locked in tight and Eddie's improvised solo features everything that made him king of 6 strings. This is 80's rock at its absolute finest...

Actually Crossroads is a bit naff to be honest, just basic pentatonic stuff that any half decent guitarist could play.

If you want to hear Clapton really play the blues then it has to be "Have you ever loved a woman" from LAOALS.

Oh, and technically Gary Moore was streets ahead of Eric.

Nuff said.

While I agree that it's fairly simple to play it's not that which is important. It's Eric's feel that makes that tune as amazing as it is. Also, remember that the pentatonic only has 5 notes so what he does with them is brilliant.

Whilst I acknowledge that you are probably a much better guitarist than I was, and I agree that Eric has a wonderful feel, I still think Crossroads is overated.

Eric has said himself that he didn't know whether he was on the beat or not while playing the solo, and that probably enhances the performance.

In my humble opinion, Clapton has played far better solos than Crossroads.

I think all you muso's are taking it too far with this technical shit "there's only 5 notes in a pentatonic scale". It's about how music makes you feel, how it resonates with you. I have no knowledge of how to play any musical instruments but know how they make me feel!

If someone can give you goosebumps using just the 5 notes of the minor pentatonic scale it makes them far more brilliant than someone like Yngwie Malmsteen who can fire off several thousand notes with massive speed and precision but still leave you cold.

Very true; however I wasn't referring to technical ability but rather the building blocks, chords, scales and keys. Without a rudimentary understanding of these it's not possible to make anything but the simplest music.

I'm not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs, just clarifying my point

I disagree.

Eddie Van Halen can't read music and claims he doesn't know scales. He says he just knows what sounds good and look at what impact he had on the guitar, guitar design, and design and rock music in general. I personally only know the minor pentatonic but play by ear.

You really don't need any theory knowledge to make great music and thinkingbthat you do is musical snobbery.
