folkestone

Nick Clegg admitted this week that he regularly cries when he listens to music. (trying to make us feel sorrry for him lol).

What song brings a tear to your eye?. Although not a song as such, ive always found the theme to the incredible Hulk a bit to a tear jerker!

"Seriously though, 'Dance With My Father' by Luther Vandross. Gets me every time. "

My father died in Chorley last year, but he used to live in Brixton. He and my mum always walked hand in hand to the Tesco's in Brixton. Driving past the Tesco's on the bus a couple of months ago I could picture him just as Dance with my father came on my iPod. The tears just flowed!

I can't listen to Sacrifice by Elton John as that song was always playing in the hospital when I visited my son in hospital. I've been unable to listen to it since he died.

There are a couple

Let it be by The Beatles. I was at home shortly after having lost my son in 1986 and this came on the radio ... the words really spoke to me. It was if they were saying "You're grieving but don't fight it - let it be". I choke up every time I hear it now.

Good Riddance (time of your life) by Green Day. My 20 year old nephew was teaching the chords to his dad shortly before he died tragically in 2007. His dad sang it with his group at his next gig but broke down and wept half way through - the audience (knowing the circumstances) erupted into song and filled in for him. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

.

My father was in hospital and was due to come home on the Monday, much against my judgement. He wanted clean PJs and I said I would bring some the next day Sunday. I was going out that afternoon so got them ready and called in at the ward that morning. When I arrived the nurse looked at me shocked and said she was just about to ring me as he had had a massive heart attack as I walked towards the room the doctor came out shaking his head. To cut a long story short when I got back in my car and turned on the engine, the radio came on and the following line of a song came on

I wasn't there that morning, when my Father passed away

Living Years Mike and the Mechanics

Brown Eyed Girl and Perfect Day were the first two songs my lovely played for me. I had Perfect Day played as we left church after his funeral.

Songbird, as it was the first one I played for him and we danced to it together round my garden.

Love is a Losing Game, by Amy Winehouse.

Cold Play's Fix You, my surgeon, nurses and I sang this as I was on the way to theatre for my mastectomy.....but that song brings a smile and tears of happiness. xxxxxx

The songs my darling wife chose for her funeral.

Melody Gardot - Our Love Is Easy (dedicated to me)

The Eagles - It's Your World Now (dedicated to her daughters)

.

There is a KD Lang song, Close Your Eyes, I like to think my wife is singing the lyrics, telling me she is watching over me.

.

Plus a load of stuff we used to have playing quietly at bedtime. The list is pretty long.

I sobbed my little heart out to "Slipping Through My Fingers" (Abba, from Mamma Mia) last night.

I have every sympathy with everyone who has lost loved ones to death, I know it must be horrible, especially when it's a young person lost, and there is no way that I would want to belittle that experience. However, "Slipping Through My Fingers" is about the time in a Mum's life when she has to acknowledge (voluntarily) that her little girl has grown up and become a woman. She has to CHOOSE to let her little girl go .....

Ah feck, pass me the tissues (amd I'm not even a Mum!)

To my shame I hadn't heard either song and I had never heard of Melody Gardot. You Tubed them both and My God. What beautiful songs. Taken together with your words Jim they are unbearably poignant but magnificent in the emotion and love they convey.

I'm sure your wife will be remembered for many, many things but what a beautiful way to encapsulate those memories.

I have to go now and compose myself.
