School Uniforms

Its that time of the year where most parents are paying out for uniforms for the next school year. Ive just checked and think i went over board.. whoops

I remember when i was a pupil we had an English assignment to write a for and against paper about them.

Plus points for them were that we were all looking the same, it was formal, punctual, gave us a sense of community and belonging, took away the stigma of not being able to afford branded names. Easily identifiable as a student when out and about.

Against points were expense..

What are your _iews on them?

School uniform now is cheaper than ever! ...much less expensive than designer labels ...I can't think of one negative thing to say about school uniforms to be honest xx

Think thats the bit im personally struggling with.. that my child who is growing really fast who does PE just once a week for an hour has to have a long sleeve rugby style shirt which will cost me £18..

My logic is why couldnt they just wear the normal short sleeve PE top £13.50 and if its cold wear their school jumper over it or heaven forbid.. a coat

Do the schools financially benefit from the parents buying uniform i wonder

Yeah not looking forward to secondary school as its Blazers..

However all uniform at my daughters primary according to them needs a logo on it.

polo shirts £6

jumpers £9

short sleeve pe top £13.50

long sleeve pe top £18

i have been sneaky and bought plain polo shirts for days its cold and unlikely she would remove her jumper :D

id say that was excessive for primary - what sort of pe do they do that requires 2 types of top - ours just had a sweatshirt with logo on the rest was basics "

the PE kit wasnt compulsory in year one but it is for this academic year and above..

Im not entirely sure of the PE curriculum.. her sports day was still assault course and egg & spoon race..

im not holding my breath she'll be entering the 2020 olympic's mind haha

Mine is moving up to secondary school this year so it's a complete new uniform with school logo on everything including the polo shirts, which makes everything that little bit more expensive ..,

I've been buying a few things every week and preying he doesn't have a growth spurt before the end of the holidays

only thing i've not bought yet are new school shoes.

Can't say I've found it expensive my twins start in September they've got a full set of uniform for all seasons and it's cost me £30 for all. The most expensive individual thing will be the shoes as I'm going to clarks for them properly measured and want a good hard wearing pair for each of them

Pros: doesn't identify you as a particular group i.e goths, emo, nerd, mainstream ect. So avoids bullying to some extent

Helps prepare you in thinking that formal dress for when you are at work or in an inter_iew (seen to many people turn up in joggers)

Cons: Does not promote individuality

Helps people identify the school you are in so they know where to target (darker one there but true)

Ours can get pricey as our son suffers with sever eczema.

So all those brilliant wonderful non iron trousers, school pe shorts, even some of the school logo jumpers are a no no.

A lot contain high polyester and or Teflon % which is a eczema suffers worst nightmare.

Everything has to be 100% cotton.

I'm dreading if our son doesn't grow out of it when he's at secondary /high school age with the likes of blazers etc.

Also a con is if you go to a really strict school, like I did, they do not allow boys to wear shorts (we did ask. Was in a heatwave and we were suffering yet the girls could wear skirts). The only shorts they said we could wear were those trouser shorts that are quite short. So a lot of boys just turned up wearing skirts

I think it should be government run with prices at a low and selling them at cost.

My 3 kids left school 5/6 years ago now so not up to scratch with the prices but it was rising and raising throughout their years at school.

As for wearing them then yes I think it's a good idea. Everyone's the same. Especially with they kids get mugged now for say trainers and stuff.

They didn't count it. But now there is a law stating that boys may wear skirts to school if they wish to, as they are making it easier for Transgender girls

Think it should just be a list of uniform that is acceptable and providing its on the list ,, anyone could wear it..

Its good that times are changing to allow for individuality in young people who are going through challenging times with emotions.

Agreed. However, we werent even allowed to have facial hair in my school as it went against the uniform code. I never got in trouble though. They only told the people with fuzzy bumfluff to shave

My daughter starts school in September. The school insist everything has to be purchased from them so has the logo on. Their jumpers are 14 quid each. 7quid for polo shirts, pe kit of shorts joggers t shirt and jumper 34quid. Book bag, pe bag, cap, over 120quid to then still have skirts/trouser's shoes and coat to buy, when she's likely to grow out of it by the end of spring term. I've got the jumper's from sainsburyschool that are a pack of 2 for a fiver. They tried telling me I could buy things from the second hand sale, told them I probably will later in the yr if things need replacing, but I'd rather she started school in brand new than seconds, and I'd get the logo'd ones if they were affordable.

Having a girl of primary school age im not sure what the policy of facial hair is HAHA

However i do think it would be unfortunate in secondary schools that young men werent allowed it. Providing they had a neat presentable appearence would it truly matter?

They have had a crack down on make up and brightly coloured hair dyes though

In all honesty, I am glad of the university course I am on because we are encouraged not to wear anything nice. Mainly because we might destroy them with latex or whatever

Laptop for the eldest as she is starting year one £300 (has to be bought from the school as it has special software) whatever happened to books and pens?

Officially the school have said to us parents that we are to buy everything with a logo on also.. but like you ive kinda stuck my fingers up at the idea.. if my daughters wearing a logo'd school jumper whats wrong with her just wearing a non logo polo top underneath.. would anyone even know??

Ive got 4 logo polo tops for the warmer days where its likely she'll not wear a jumper.. but ive 7 non logo'd tops for days where its chilly

Would they really send her home?!

Transgender female means Male to Female. So that is how it would work. Also would have transfered her (the mtf) to an all girls school or a mixed school

I've not got anything from the school. They gave us the order forms at the induction evening, 10 days before the order deadline, and they had to be paid for with the order, I just couldn't afford it at such short notice mid month.

Same with our school uniform suppliers.. orders in by the 5th of August.

Had to pay in full on the day.. I think its a shame that suppliers couldnt assist parents more by setting up payment plans prior to this,, the chances are they would actually get larger orders as one lump sum can be hard to find for some people.

Equally you could argue.. we know August/September is uniform month and we should advanced budget for this..

My main issue with uniforms at the moment is the shoe policy at daughters secondary school. They are not allowed to wear boots in any form, not even ankle boots, even in the snow and ice, and the only approved girls shoes are the thin soled get your feet wet type.

I think uniform is a great idea but not when it dictates your child has to walk round with cold wet feet all day.

My sons blazer is £35, his bag is £60! Jumper £15 pe kit £35 shirts tie pants shoes etc then I've my daughters to get.

Right ontop of his birthday then daughters birthday then dare I say the word CHRISTMAS!!

School uniform is cheap, However the shoes is the difference as all shirts and trousers are similar so the kids only way of being different is shoes, £60 for a pair of N Ike Huaraches

Exactly. I ended up going in Docs for my school shoes and those were fine yet girl's were being told off for wearing anything else aside from those flimsy school shoes

That's rediciouls a LAP TOP,, ? every child in my daughters school have access to iPads and PCs. What happens if lap top gets broken in school? My children's school won't allow any form of personal electronics that's In primary and secondary.

wow that is poor..

remember in the 90's we were just into 'kickers'.. and those with a bit of a platform.

providing it had grip, covered our foot and had a sensible heel i dont think our teachers minded.

In the summer we could wear the 'dolly' shoes.. but again in winter foot had to be covered

I'm unconvinced too. I was bullied at school but for being fat not for the clothes I wore and they weren't all designer labels and sport brands as my parents couldn't afford them, a uniform doesn't unify it wearers in the sense of equality bullies will always find a way to belittle regardless

I like the fact the kids wear uniform, it makes the school look smarter in appearance for a start!!

My eldest started secondary four years ago, my middle on three years ago and two years ago they changed the boys uniform entirely!! Thankfully they can have plain blue shirts not like the girls who have to have a logo on the collar.

My third starts in September and if it wasn't for my parents I have no idea how I would afford it to be honest, they have been a godsend.

I worked it out it's about £230 all in for everything he will need!! I've trimmed it abit though and my eldest as he is doing his exams next May we are kinda seeing what we can get away with!!

My son's school doesn't have a uniform and maybe some of the kids are competitive as to wanting designer labels but I see very little of it and my son certainly doesn't have lots of designer labels - a couple of Ben Sherman t-shirts if they count. The majority of his clothes are George, Tesco etc Most of the lads go in jean and top and the girls the same. I wonder if it goes the other way...as in actually helps kids realise that the clothes don't 'maketh the kid' so to speak??

There was something in a documentary program a few weeks ago about rip-off school uniforms. These new academies popping up all over the place have boards of governors and many of these governor's are local businesspeople who just happen to own shops selling everything from school uniforms to computer equipment, apparently it's very rewarding financially as the governor's control where the money is spent and who gets the contract to supply equipment.

Although this year has cost me a fortune as it's my girls first year in high school but she is now my only one at school I felt it more qhen I had three to buy.

When our eldest (9) started primary every item had to have the school name on it, pe kit, pinnafore,jumpers, sweatshirts, shirts all had to come from the school & was blooming expensive. Our youngest starts there in Sept. & it's all come from supermarkets as the policy was dropped after complaints. We still got her polo shirts from the school though as felt she should have something with the name on..Next up the shoes, but we'll leave those to the week before they go back..

yes that's true but arguably why should they be oppressed by a uniform that conforms them to a sex they don't identify with even during set school times? The fact is the LGBT community is growing and if uniforms in general not just school uniforms are to be enforced they need to move with the times, it could still be done smartly

Couldn't agree with you more!!!!

They even dictate how children should wear their hair.

My son wears black trainers to school, always has. Couldn't get any plain black ones so got some with a bit of white on them. Head teacher went mad, phoned me and said it made him stand out from the rest. Yeah, so what was my reply. But he'll get teased she said. So kids can tease him because of his learning difficulties but not his shoes? She offered to buy him shoes he could change into when he got to school!! Guess that wouldn't get him teased either???

I've had to teach my son that it's acceptable to be different ( because of his learning difficulties) so to tell him he has to be exactly the same as everyone else by way of a uniform goes against that.

I asked her if having a bit of white on his shoes had any bearing on his learning? She couldn't respond to that one.

My last point to her was if I have to buy my son new shoes then she'd damn well better get the parents of the year six girls to buy new skirts as most of them are belts!!!

It's really coming to something when children from the age of four to eighteen can't be a little individual. People blame the media for dictating how people should look, how about schools?

Oh I like the uniform, nothing g against it, if the prices for my daughterson school were the same as yours I'd have no issue at all. But our polo shirts are a higher price than your jumpers. They insist on logo'd everything and it's over 120quid for what she would need and we were given 10 days to put the orders in, with payment, mid month, and earlier than I'd expected to have to pay for it.

But that's a different argument really. Even if there were no uniform would it still be acceptable for a Boy to wear a dress to school? I don't see many school age boys (gender fluid or not) wanting to wear a dress anyway for the fear of being bullied.....but That's a different issue.

They've changed my youngest's uniform to blue joggers (instead of grey trousers) because they spend so much time outside, but they look scruffier quicker I find.

So far have bought two new coats (got them from the Tresspass discount shop at outlet near me) for just under £50, but they watertight which is important cos it always frigging raining here.

New joggers for youngest (4 pairs)

Two red polo shirts for youngest

Got to get more white polo shirts for eldest

But still need to buy longer length trousers and shoes for eldest - leaving that till last minute as he's growing fast!

Need shoes for youngest but leave that till last minute too. I get them measured at Clarkes for shoe size then buy the shoes somewhere cheaper as Clarkes are so expensive.

Sports outfit for eldest and logo'd jumpers for both also to buy and a new pack lunch bag.

Also need to get them both those waterproof all in one things for outdoor activities, and new wellies.

Running out of dosh though.

Yeah not looking forward to secondary school as its Blazers..

However all uniform at my daughters primary according to them needs a logo on it.

polo shirts £6

jumpers £9

short sleeve pe top £13.50

long sleeve pe top £18

school fleece £15

i have been sneaky and bought plain polo shirts for days its cold and unlikely she would remove her jumper :D

id say that was excessive for primary - what sort of pe do they do that requires 2 types of top - ours just had a sweatshirt with logo on the rest was basics

the PE kit wasnt compulsory in year one but it is for this academic year and above..

Im not entirely sure of the PE curriculum.. her sports day was still assault course and egg & spoon race..

im not holding my breath she'll be entering the 2020 olympic's mind haha "

Think thats the bit im personally struggling with.. that my child who is growing really fast who does PE just once a week for an hour has to have a long sleeve rugby style shirt which will cost me £18..

My logic is why couldnt they just wear the normal short sleeve PE top £13.50 and if its cold wear their school jumper over it or heaven forbid.. a coat

Do the schools financially benefit from the parents buying uniform i wonder "

Cause when little jimmy falls over outside parents will demand to know why his coat is ruined and he has cuts all over him from the metal bits on the jacket.

Same goes for little timmy who he ran into

I envy all those that can get cheap school uniform, my sons school is a absolute fortune and it's Nike branded with the school logo. He has to have socks, shorts, t shirt, fleece trousers, long sleeved top and fleece. It comes to £92 for his size, it goes up the bigger they get

Then has to have full school uniform too including blazer and clarks shoes so it costs me near on £200

fyi county primary schools cant enforce uniforms...including all the logo stuff...

my daughter wears trousers to primary school even though the uniform is skirts dresses. she doesnt wear their 'summer term' uniform either.

the others have gone through secondary without the 'designated' pe kit..i just refuse to buy it...they want to pay for it they can...not a peep..but maybe thats because they know ive homeschooled before.

no issues with uniform in general but i object to inflated prices because of a 'logo'..its as bad as branded/ designer wear and i wont buy into it...

The kids' school uniform policy is very strict. Any infringement and they are sent home. Three strikes and it's Saturday detentions and parents in for a talking to.

Blazers on whatever the weather, school shoes only - no boots allowed - no matter what the weather and the right tie to show what year they are in.

The PE kit seems to cost as much as the blazer but trousers and shirts can be from the supermarket, as long as they are the right colour.

I have mixed feelings about school uniform.

"I envy all those that can get cheap school uniform, my sons school is a absolute fortune and it's Nike branded with the school logo. He has to have socks, shorts, t shirt, fleece trousers, long sleeved top and fleece. It comes to £92 for his size, it goes up the bigger they get

Then has to have full school uniform too including blazer and clarks shoes so it costs me near on £200

I think uniforms are good but polo shirts and jumpers much better, my son isn't allowed to remove his blazer on a scorching day

My dughter has to wear a blazer and she's not allowed to take it off. She usues her water bottle all the time as well but gets too hot some days.and you send you kids to this kind of school because?????"

Because it's the best state school in the area and it gets the best out of my son. However I obviously didn't know the pe uniform cost when I applied to get him in this well over subscribed school

Ties!!! Don't get me started!! When I was at school it was one tie until the end, now they change after the 2nd year and my middle one is always losing his, think I've spent the best part of £50 on new ties for him alone the past three years!!

And also I feel wearing a uniform teaches them that when they have to get a job that most work places have uniforms, if they are allowed to go in whatever (it does create bullying, my non school uniform days was like a free for all for all the kids with more money to take the piss out of the kids that could only afford asda and stuff).

I do get what people say about being individual and stuff but at the end of the day, they are IN SCHOOL and kids have to have rules to live by. It's easier to spot kids out and about (for a pure example here, just recently their has been a spat of bullying on the train home from one of the nearby schools, the public can identify the school and narrows it down somewhat to find out who it is, no uniform and you couldn't tell)
