Help!! My computer is playing up!!

It has taken a while to log in properly. I have got my usual desktop up now....usual pic and icons etc but nothing will open. I can't even get the start menu up using my mouse pad or the window button. The 'thinking' icon thing keeps spinning round and round

Any clues?! Was working fine last time I used it. When I went to turn it on the battery had discharged completely but it's charging now.

Have you had it for a long time?

It could be the disk has filled up and it doesn't have enough space left on it to run the operating system properly.

Probably 18 months and I don't really use it for much other than surfing the net. Don't have masses of music etc on it.

I assume it is windows. Do you know which version?

If you press the caps lock key, does the caps lock light come on?

What sort of computer is it? (tower, desktop, laptop)...

Can you hear the fan working?

When did you last give it a good suck/blow to get dust out of it?

Have you just installed new software or an update?

Answer these questions and someone may be able to help you or give you some idea of what is wrong.

OP, take the key out of the case.

Insert in the hole at the side of your computer.

Wind it up. It will be fine!

Now either downgrade to windows 7 or upgrade to 10

8.1 was the worst system ever made

Right...

took battery out...

Its a laptop!

Laptops are prone to overheating. When they overheat they first run slow then breakdown, sometimes it is the CPU fan that is first to go causing CPU to go, sometimes it is the motherboard or hard drive.

I would advise spending £40/50 on an external (usb) hard drive and making a copy of your hard drive for starters. Also go on ebay and spend another £10 to £15 on a multi-fan laptop cooler (it will extend the life of your laptop considerably).

Then have your lappy checked, cleaned and a new fan fitted. Ask whoever is doing it to show you how to keep it free of dust too.

Finally although they are called laptops they do not like being used on laps! It blocks the air vents and causes them to overheat, so use it on a table or tray and with a cooler.

Hope this helps you.

The free upgrade to 10 offer has officially ended but there are ways and means around it. 10 is a big improvement upon 8 imo.

I have been using 10 for nearly a year now and have no problems with it. However I would tell people to go to a site like:

http://merabheja.com/disable-spying-and-telemetry-windows-10/

And follow all the instructions to turn off the data mining. I would further advise rechecking the setting regularly as some win10 updates switch data mining back on. Also it is a good idea to change your internet setting to limited bandwith as this is the only way I know of to turn off the automatic downloading and installation of win10 updates.

I tried "upgrading" to 10 and it didn't like it at all. Was crashing & then the menu's refused to work etc. For this laptop, W10 really didn't work. Ended up reverting back to 8.1 which has always worked absolutely fine (& is again now, thankfully).

I'll see your Windows 8.1 and raise you a Windows 8.

Not enough? OK, I'll throw in Vista. And now, the piece de resistance, I'm going all in with Windows ME!

Windows 8.1 the worst OS ever made? It's not even close to being the worst operating system from Microsoft!
