I honestly have no idea how you have the patience to teach especially maths, I have high qualifications in the subject but teaching it is beyond me and I'm talking 5yr old stuff. Ahhhhh just needed to vent!!

They can be annoying and difficult but they are cute most of the times. I have only been in a primary setting so don't know about the teens.

It's really hard for me to explain. I can teach complex maths but explaining the most basic stuff to a young child that is basically a plank page is impossible and I am fully aware it's my fault because I can't explain it differently. I even used the phrase'it's obvious'. I feel guilty and depressed. Thanks for all help X

Brighton - even Hove!

Kids and adults learn in different ways, kinaesthetic....show by example.....etc etc. Break tasks down into little chunks and seek feedback after each section and do the army thing: tell them what you're going to do, do it and then tell them what they learnt. Give feedback too: "you did this well (be specific) and to get better, do this"

Sort of thing.

Isn't a. blank page brilliant, an amazing place to be, no preconceptions, no fixed ideas

Get it right and they will love maths, as obviously someone has done with you op.

Just need to pass your experience on I the way you experienced it.

Unless this thread has a totally different reason for being on the forum.....

I had a similar problem, engineering theorum based and everytime I tried to explain it to someone else it would never get across. What I realised it that my mind forgot to break it down to the basics, so I was always thinking at 'the advanced level'. I've now trained my mind to think in the basics and now when explaining something to a junior it gets across. Think of it like this, the second derivative is pretty much adding up the area of a number of shapes. If you thunk basic and idiot proof, you can explain it basic and idiot proof.

you have hit the nail on the head, you don't realise that when you solve a complex problem you use all the basic methods with out a single thought of what you have done, so you take then for granted and forget how to explain it.

Red wine has helped. Haha

It's a generation of people expecting instant results (thanks google!) and instant gratification (thanks porn sites) - however, that doesn't build resilience and I se it in fab when the younger folk are wondering why they are not getting meets within their 2-3 weeks on here. So....I would set up challenging tasks for the kids where it gradually gets more difficult to succeed but when they do, the rewards are bigger. A life lesson, if you will.
