Anyone have Oxfam's number? I've just got my water bill and then heard on TV that Oxfam can supply a family of four with water for just £2 a month. I'm swapping suppliers

I know its a bit bad but I did find it funny

I dont think it costs anything to get your flat metered and if it will save you money think of all the extra money to spend on babywipes, shampoo & perfumes xx

We have to pay for the upkeep and cleaning of the beaches and sewage outlets into the sea as part of our water services.....

It's high time the UK implemented a Spanish style 'Equalisation' scheme, the Lib (Fib) Dems did have this as part of their manifesto, but it was swept under the carpet after the election.

Equal water bills for every household in the UK, on council tax type bands.

Absolutely not.

A bed and breakfast owner in Girvan should pay the same water rates/ unit as the owner of a string of but n ben type chalets in the Cairngorms National park?

Metered is fairer. Pay for what you use, the more you use the more you pay. Encourage economy and non wastage.

Doesn't it depend on how that water is supplied?

If, as it does in Cairngorm, it comes straight off the hill via a network of privately installed, owned and maintained, pipes into the home/ office/ B&B/ workplace - where's the right of anyone (Scottish Hydro/ Scotish Water) to seek to charge anyone for that?

Metered is only fairer if you have the same unit rate throughout the country....the variations in regional tariffs per unit are ridiculous, for once the EU is going to be a good thing if and when they enforce equalisation of tariffs in individual member states.

The way metering is presently billed it enables governments to burden water companies in certain parts of the country with ridiculous enviromental targets that result in horrendous bills for households.

Doesn't it make sense that those with easy access to good beaches - as in the extreme south-west of England and the Ayrshire and Fife coasts of Scotland ought to pay that bit more for the amenity those facilities provide?

No....simply because the whole of the population are free to use those beaches, and it is the visitors and tourists to a seaside area that use the beaches far more than the local population....who are too busy working to enjoy them.

Devon and Cornwall for instance have one of the lowest average wage rates in the country.....yet those same people on these low wages pay the highest water rates (by a long way) in the country....

Many european countries have equalisation schemes for water tariffs, it's now time for the UK to fall into line.

It may well be the case that everyone does, indeed, have access to those beaches but it often comes at the expense of a not inexpensive journey, but that's not to say that those who have the capacity to use and enjoy the facilities available where they choose to live ought not to stick their hand into their pocket for the facility.

The Westcountry isn't a holiday camp....most of the population don't move down here....they are born here.

Which takes away the argument that they choose to live here, many have no choice.

There is also the problem that the area with more beaches than anywhere else in the country also has one of the smallest populations, which means that the local population pay more per head (Double) for the water than someone living in Bristol for instance.

It's not the water consumed that impacts upon the bills, it is in the main the ridiculous sewage and water treatment targets that successive governments have imposed on the private water companies.

They are so intent on keeping the beaches squeaky clean that our sewage outlets in Devon for instance lay further from the shore than anywhere else in the country, and it those enviromental targets that impact upon local residential water bills.

As I said earlier, the Lib Dems proposed a bed levy on tourism in the region to help offset the water bills, it was backed by Labour before the election but the coalition have now thrown this out.
