not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

My mum has been in hospital ..now out yey.. however.. when she was away on holiday and while she's been away in hospital both times a sum of money has gone from her house. , no break in and not all of the money was taken,

She is obviously upset by this as it seems it's someone with a key (neighbour or friends) she goes away on holiday in a few weeks and I suggested a motion activated camera..then we can find out who..

Would you setup a camera ?

Difficult. I would put any money in a secure place, find out who has keys and speak to them all in a non confrontational way just explaining the situation. Is there any need for anyone but you to go in when she's away, could you change the locks? I'm not sure about the camera.

I'd change the locks. You don't need a locksmith, just buy the same kind from a DIY shop and change them, armed with a screwdriver.

Unless you want to catch the previous thief, in which case I'd lie in wait with a baseball bat and in your statement to the police say that they "fell down the stairs"

Also as difficult as it might be to consider are you sure the money has gone missing, could it be slight confusion? If she was feeling unwell or medicated could she be mistaken?

I simply wouldn't leave money lying around.

I would also change the locks and not give my keys to people I can't trust.

If you don't want to cause an upset by changing locks (I understand some people may feel offended, or if maybe difficult because people need access to help your mum) do the camera. But also hide the money, only giving people access to money that they're actually owed.

Mums brain is still sharp, money was there I saw it Wednesday night when I'd fed the cat, when I called Thursday evening £20 had gone in coins, I checked where she keeps some notes and £30.00 is missing as well.

sound advice camera is a good option so for future knowledge and catch them then confront them with it pay back or police get the evidence it's a total betrayal of trust

Absolutely get a motion camera, you can get some relatively cheaply on Amazon. Hide and lock money away in a secure place, but leave out a few notes in view of the camera.

Yes, install a camera. The their is preying on someone vulnerable who has their trust. Changing the locks won't help if you don't know who it is a folk need access to feed the cats, but the culprit needs to be pin pointed. I'd not give anyone who has access any indication that the loses have been noticed. I did the same when doing private home care. The gentleman we were caring for confronted myself and my colleague, as we were the only 1 with access, via a key safe, other than family. Turned out it was the grandson. We put the cameras up for him to clear ourselves.

If money does need to be left available then keep a little book with date, amount of money then ask everyone to sign when the take any, how much taken & leave receipts in the book.

Failing that, contact help the aged regarding a shopping service. Or contact an animal feeding/walking service to care for cat in absence.

I would definitely speak to those with a key though as it is a gross breach of trust as well as theft. Tell them your mum no longer feels safe.

Yes,if only for peace of mind. There are many reasonably priced and,more relevantly,discreet cameras on the market.

You want to achieve 2 things it seems. 1 stop the money going. 2 Know who tries to take the money next time.

It's no good finding out who did it last time because you never will.

So. 1. Set up cameras so that you can see what people who go in are up to.

2. Leave money that you know has a chance of going missing where it is normally left.

no more to be done.

Don't confront people all that will happen is that even the innocent will not help out in future.

I would say up the camera as there is obviously someone your mum cannot trust and this needs to be sorted. Then I would suggest a safe or two for her valuables for when she goes away.

Mum tells me there are two neighbours with keys, I've a key and my brother has, as mum is housebound there's no need for the nurses carers cleaner to have one..
