Yes..them and intel the market leaders. Google the processor to see how current it is. Go for big Ram and big harddrive..two if possible. Some have one hard drive partitioned into two.

Hi Mrs S.

To know what's best for you it would help if we knew what you plan to do with it.

Without the graphics & video, then I'd say that a budget laptop would be fine. If you start doing "graphics heavy" work and video editing, then you will need something much more powerful. I would be looking for something with an Intel i5 processor, at least 8gb of RAM, and ideally a SSD hard disk as that would make a big difference for video editing. Also a big screen would be better.

Personally, it say you would be better off with a desktop PC for the video and Graphics work... or maybe a Mac Book.

Reading

macbooks last a very long time (at least compared to other laptops i've used before)

solid battery life, get it with whatever extra warranty you can get and it might end up being the last laptop you need to buy for years. regularly see macbooks upwards of 6 years old still in regular use (mine's touching on 4 years now, and the only issues are the shift key not working and one of the rubber feet falling off)

Thanks Cal

I need something portable and the graphics and video would be minimal and sporadic

Essex.

I have an hp with AMD, it's my first and last AMD...

I will be going back to Intel when I replace it...

I don't know much about laptops but when I took it back for the 2nd or 3rd time, I was told that for some reason AMD didn't like windows 10... It may have been total bs but it's given me more grief than any other laptop or pc I have ever owned...

I am an IT professional and I would never buy an AMD based PC for myself. If the video and graphics stuff is not crucial, then you'll be able to buy a less expensive machine.

Personally if it's a brand new modern laptop I'll go straight for a Intel i3 it does general tasks perfectly well and the new Intel HD graphics for the job for editing and stuff, should be fine, Intels processors are usually quite a margin faster than amd offerings but also in rare cases amd cpus can lack support in some programs making stuff either not work or just be really bad on performance, it is rare, but everyones computer usage is different.

Also would look for 8gb ram on modern computers too as it's just worth having the extra memory for more browser tabs heh, I hate to be bashing on amd products too but Intel are in another league at the moment, amd might be fine for your usage but if it's only a minor price difference it's worth going with Intel provided it's a i3 or i5 I'm not fond of the pentium or atom things but I'm just a performance horder anyway.

In general terms Intel are better than AMD.

However some Intel are not as good as some AMD

Intel have a number of processors the i series are the easiest to follow.

i3 are entry level.

i5 are mid level.

i7 are the best.

However there are now 6 generations of the i series and each generation is generally faster than the previous. When looking at Intel i series processors the first number in the 4 digit code after the i number denotes the generation of chip.

You really should be looking for a minimum of an i5 4*** processor and at least 8 gig of RAM. However if you want to use it for streaming videos then you need to get a machine with an i7 processor with a separate graphics card.

Central

There are sites that compare different processors and rate them, such as 2 different intel's or an intel versus an AMD on a laptop you've seen.

Without the graphics editing etc, then most budget laptops would work fine for browsing, music and low load stuff like that. And not need tons of RAM - extra can usually be added later.

Sound advice from this poster. . Only other thing i would say is if you can, try to get one with an SSD hard disk (solid state disk)

They will be quieter , wont use as much power and dont cause laptops to get hot. . And best of all, no moving parts for data to corrupt if you accidently knock your laptop whilst maybe vigoriously perving on FabSwingers or drop it when its on.

Thank you

This is great and just what i needed to know. Had decided needs to be at least i5 if i went intel from the reviews but didn't understan the numbers after until now.

I'll try looking again armed with this info.

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but if your doing graphics stuff then I would be looking for a laptop with a separate graphics card and not one with on board graphics.

Processor wise I personal I would go for a minimum of the Intel i5, works well with my CAD package.
