Back of Beyond

I used to be a bus driver, suffered loads of abuse from idiots

What you as a car user fail to realise is just how much room you need to manouvre something so big as a 40ft bus, you get so cocooned in your 'little' tin box.nOn top of that they have the stress of driving to a set timetable and keeping to time and the safety of up to 80 people to contend with.

Think about it next time, that bus is 4 times the length of your car and 3 feet wider! I'd suggest before you critisise their driving ability that you get yourself down and have an hours tuition in one at the local training centre.

It'll be an eye opener for you for sure.

Can I add a list of 'piss takers' when it comes to showing crappy road skills?

Taxis drivers, cyclists, car drivers, lorry drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, animals.... blah blah blah...

Everyone and anything that uses the road is quite capable of being a nuisance without one category becoming victim of sweeping generalisation

I don't have any stress over busses, they charge too much and often have a crappy service but I don't stress over them. I do stress over the people that park on the road directly opposite a bus stop that's on a narrow road, so when the bus comes it's instant gridlock!

A bus (archaically also omnibus, multibus, or autobus) is a road vehicle designed to carry passengers. Buses have a capacity as high as 300 passengers.

The most common type of bus is the single-decker bus, with larger loads carried by double-decker buses and articulated buses, and smaller loads carried by midibuses and minibuses.

Coaches are used for longer distance services. Bus manufacturing is increasingly globalised, with the same design appearing around the world.

Buses may be used for scheduled bus transport, scheduled coach transport, school transport, private hire, tourism; promotional buses may be used for political campaigns and others are privately operated for a wide range of purposes.

Horse drawn buses were used from 1820, followed by steam buses in the 1830 and electric trolleybuses in 1882. The first buses powered by internal combustion engines were used 1895[citation needed] and this is still the most common power source. Recently there has been growing interest in hybrid electric buses, fuel cell buses, electric buses as well as ones powered by compressed natural gas or bio-diesel.

Bus spotting is a pastime in which one seeks to see all buses in a particular fleet or those produced by a particular manufacturer. A person who engages in these activities is known as a bus spotter, bus fan (popular name in Hong Kong), bus nut (term popular in the UK) or bus enthusiast (although this term can also cover preservationists). Within the bus industry bus spotters are known as moquettes, from the material used to make the seat coverings. As with train or aircraft spotters, bus spotters spend much time outdoors with notepads, cameras or camcorders, monitoring bus routes. Often, bus spotters are only particularly interested in one type of vehicle, such as: vintage vehicles, or articulated buses, while others may only prefer trolleybuses.

Bus spotters are relatively unconcerned by timetables or network quality but they may be interested in new liveries, especially ad-hoc schemes to advertise particular products or events. Some may be so keen that they might track a vehicle through its life, knowing for example which fleet numbers it has carried with different owners and when mechanical parts or interior fittings were renewed. Bus spotting has never had the wide following achieved by train spotting in the UK, even though enthusiasts can share the common term of "gricer", however it has become popular in Hong Kong and many bus societies have been formed there.

Bus spotters usually like to keep abreast of the news about buses. They may also like to take photographs of buses and ride on them. Since bus spotting involves urban mass transit, it often goes hand in hand with metrophily. In New York, the two are often combined into "transit fan", a person who studies both bus and rail rapid transit, with the same diligence.

As a bus driver for more years than I can remember.

We would be sent out on a days shift with a timetable and a routeboard.... If we were early we were booked and docked wages....Ifwe were late we were booked and docked wages,,,,,

Now the people who wrote these timetables etc I'm sure rode the route on a motorcycle without stopping at the bus stops.....

It is almost impossible to keep to a timetable especially in peak times as the traffic is too heavy... hence the reason a lot of bus drivers do not pull over into a bus stop. Once in you and never get back out adding time to the journey which then snowballs onto the the next journey and the next until you realise you are running half an hour late on a 20 minute service.

Back at the garage you are then you are in shit and are light in your wages.....

Hence the reason I let Public Transport to drive Private Hire coaches more fun

And hey we do pick up Swinging Parties....

I've driven buses in the past and it is the most thankless stressful job you could ever imagine. Passengers treat you like scum, employers assume you're on the fiddle all the time and other road users assume you're the worst driver in the world. As it happens, most drivers (although there are exceptions in every walk of life) are polite, courteous and honest. They do not try to steal money from their employers and are better trained and qualified as drivers than most other road users.... If a bus is driving in the middle of the road then there would be a reason for it - the driver wouldn't be doing it just for a laugh or to annoy other road users...
