New guidelines from Public Health England (PHE) urge businesses to create indoor ‘vaping’ rooms so that staff can indulge in e-cigarettes without going outside.

The guidance also advises that employees are given extra break-times for their habit and urges employers to make the vaping devices a “more convenient option” - to encourage workers to give up traditional cigarettes.

Workers should not be forced to vape outdoors - in places set aside for regular smokers - because this will “undermine their ability to quit smoking”, the advice says.

The guidance advises businesses: “Vapers should not be required to use the same space as smokers, as this could undermine their ability to quit smoking and stay smokefree, particularly among those most heavily addicted.

“To maximise the number of smokers switching to e-cigarettes, vaping should be made a more convenient, as well as safer, option.”

An indoor space is suggested, because “forcing smokers outdoors has increased public visibility of smoking, including to children and young people”.

E-cigarette vapour can be irritating to people with asthma and other respiratory conditions, it admits and their needs “should be taken into account”.

But vaping should be only be banned outright in schools or other workplaces where children are present, the guidance states.

It doesn't have to an indoor room, why not just another outdoor area if space is available?

I work at a large place with several areas that could be used for vaping. I realise in the end it just comes down to my will power, but a vape-only area would certainly help I think.

I personally can see this getting abused by the smokers. Soon as it starts to get cold, the vaping room will get new people in.

I vape, and have no issues standing in the smoking shelter with the rest of the smokers

Same here, but once I'm in the smoking area I usually smoke : )

Entirely down to my own lack of will power I know, but I still quite like the idea

No, as a non smoker, I think they should be given free rein to smoke them anywhere. They're not a cigarette, they don't smell and that's better than people hanging around the pub doorway with the smoke blowing in.

They smell and they can set off fire alarms.

Twice one of our factories has been evacuated and the fire service brought out because of idiots using them.

Definitely ahouldnt get extra breaks to use them either

I didn't say it is. But I don't think it's a bad thing if employers who are able to, look at doing things like this.

If I was in the position of employer I would want to help people out and make things easier for them if possible. But as I said, of course the bottom line is my own will power

I'm a vaper (for my sins). It has helped me quit smoking and I haven't touched them for 2 years now. I know I won't ever go back to it, slowly reducing my nicotine intake, and it's the only thing that have worked so I'm all for ecigs.

I hate having to stand/sit with smokers, hate the smell and it's not encouraging vapers to stay off the cigs, my work place allows ecigs anywhere in the grounds of the works except indoors and I am happy with that.

As for additional breaks, the chance would be a fine thing

I think vaping is a great idea even the idea of a vapers area isn't a bad one but extra breaks is out of order to us that don't smoke or vape so it will make people who don't do it want to so they can have an extra 5 min sit down!

I don't understand the hooha about e-cigs/vaping. It doesn't cause passive smoking and can help people stop smoking. Why are people who do it treated like social pariahs? They might as well bloody smoke!

Don't see why employers should provide separate areas. Smokers have more breaks than anyone else.

Yes I think vapers need to have there own area. Be it indoors or not. Indoors is better. Being an ex smoker. I have fallen off the wagon a couple of times due to having to stand in a shelter or area with smoker's. It also smells nasty. And sometimes will power does not prevail!! For the people that never smoked I envy you. But most if any will ever understand how difficult it is to give up.

I think the rules for e-cigs should be the same as for smoking - i.e banned in enclosed public spaces. If you cant smoke then you shouldn't vape. No to extra breaks, it just isn't fair, but there should be a separate area for vapers who don't want to be with the smokers if possible.

I stopped smoking nearly 4 weeks ago and it makes it really hard when i have to go into the designated smoking area to use my e-cig when i'm at work. It is the only time i come close to caving in and having a ciggie but so far my willpower is holding out. It would make it so much easier if my employer either provided a designated vaping area or allowed us to stand some distance away from the smokers

Why do people think tbey have a right to stop working to pursue their habit? Do it in your own time. All smoking/vaping breaks should be worked back otherwise non smokers do the work they don't do while out smoking. Why should employers go to the expense of making rooms to pander to a habit?

I think some of the vapours actually smell worse than proper fags if you smoke you smoke vape people have just replaced one thing for another and I see vapours constantly on there vapes kind of chain smoking that cant be good for you either x

Some vapers and smokers may get away with smoker's breaks. But where I work you either have your break or you have the equivalent in in small smoke breaks. Everyone does there fare share.
