I was just wondering...

People who post random mean or nasty comments on forums about other users who they don't know and will never know: what's the buzz?

Anyone got any ideas?

I doubt very much that they get a thrill. That behaviour is very often exhibited by people with low self esteem or those suffering some form of anguish.

I'm pretty sure they feel no better as a result but can't break out of the cycle of negativity.

They are insecure about themselves and get temporary relief by making someone else feel like crap?

I include the ones who post misogynistic or racist or simply offensive comments on any social media forum including twitter and fb etc.

Now they are real mean nasty people who sit in their bedroom in a dirty pair of pants on their computer moaning and have probably never seen daylight.

It does seem that the one's who've been publicly outed (eg the ones who trolled Mary Beard on twitter for being an older woman who put her appearance second to her scholarship and ability to communicate) all behave like a small child who got caught doing something they know was wrong. (sorry, unwieldy sentence)

Why do people post things they would never say to someone's face?

Is it what they really think but daren't say?

I believe it is purely to make someone else feel as shit as they do.

Majority of the times these people face rejection of some sort and need some attention. Even though it is negative attention they get, it is still attention.

I much rather get a buzz from making someone smile

Most of the times it isn't. They say it sat behind a keyboard purely because they have no confidence and are gutless. They can't say it face to face out of fear but hope that if they say something like this hiding behind a keyboard, firstly most people wouldn't know who they really are and secondly you will most likely always find another ignorant ass to join you.

"Why do people post things they would never say to someone's face?

Yes.

They think the internet means they will face no consequences for bad behaviour, so are free to insult and deride as much as they like. They pretend that they don't care that they're loathed for their attitude, but deep down, their brief moment of superior behaviour can't quite erase their insecurity. Which is why they keep doing it - the feeling of importance is a drug to them, but transient.

I make a choice whether to join certain debates because I know that some of the comments will provoke me and I may get carried away and cross a line. So I either phrase things really carefully or don't say anything and stop reading.

As for fb well mine is all cat memes and silly stuff

I think it's more than just having low self esteem .... mine is practically non existent but I'd never ever knowingly write anything intended to make someone else feel bad. Quite apart from the sheer ridiculousness of picking on someone you don't know, there's no way I'd want to make someone feel bad when I know first hand how that feels.

I think unfortunately there are, as in any walk of life, some very unpleasant people about who like chucking that grenade and then standing back to watch the mayhem ensue. They don't care who gets caught in the crossfire, I guess they get a kick however from having created a 'popular' thread, i.e. one with several responses, no matter that it's built on negativity and nastiness. You go on practically any Internet forum and you'll see the same type of person crop up time and again ..... I'm lucky that despite not having much self confidence generally, for some reason internet spats don't usually get to me because unless someone knows me personally I'm able to see how crazy it is. I know it's not so easy for others though and I feel for them a lot.

As ever probably the best reaction to the nastiness is to ignore it .... but appreciate that's hard to do if someone's attacked a friend or said something outrageously nasty and unnecessary. But if no-one ever responded chances are the bullies and the spiteful characters would run out of steam and hopefully piss off.

Yes I would agree with that, chasing the dragon.....and the very facets of other people they criticise are often those they most despise about themselves, they are often projecting, trying to get rid of their own bad.

Could be they've seen something a person has written about others and think they need a reality check.

But surely a reality check doesn't need to be mean, nasty or offensive.

I have friends with very different opinions to me and we can disagree with vigour and conviction but without offending each other.

The problem is when people get personal. You can disagree with something someone has posted without attacking the poster themselves.

Adults can do that.

Kids scream and stamp their feet.

I am far more likely to just make a private note if someone says something I consider particularly offensive. Just in case our paths ever cross at a later date.
