The Turkish military have closed two of the main bridges in Istanbul and military jets are flying over the capital city Ankara - not sure yet what's going on or if the incidents are related? Something big seems to be unfolding ..

If you have friends or family in Turkey I'm sure they are safe, this is not a murderous coup (or at least it appears not) and I expect the military will not turn arms onto citizens.

I'm not so sure Erdogan is one of the good guys - he's got a long record of human rights abuses, conflict with the Kurds and abuses there, muzzling of the press, corruption allegations justice and democracy being eroded and the office of the president strengthened.

The military long considers itself to be guardian of the legacy of Attaturk, ie, a secular state.

Erdogan has made or attempted many inroads into this, with increasing frequency.

Turkish military broadcasts on state TV amid coup reports

An announcement on the Turkish state broadcaster TRT says that a curfew has been declared across Turkey and that airports are closed. The announcer says they are being made to read a statement by the military.

The statement promises a new constitution for the country and says that democracy and the secular rule of law had been undermined. Martial law has also been imposed, it adds.

They are a SECULAR country...since Attaturk in 1920s. The founding basis of Turkeys military is to protect that secular rule. Erduan was eroding that and introducing Muslim law....probably why the military have moved against him.

Sounds like its a countrywide thing, and only the police are standing by the President... which is a losing move as the whole military is on the streets with tanks helicopters and militarty jets.

definitely agree. A hardcore / increasingly radical Islamist country as the gateway between Asia & Europe or a secular democracy? No brainer for me ..

I'm pro - coup in this instance if it can be done in an orderly, bloodless way and upholds citizens freedoms and rights, something that Erdogan has chipped away at over time via new legislation. He's quoted at hoping for the implementation of sharia law in Turkey.

Erdogan statement on FaceTime

President Erdogan called on Turks to take to the streets in a surreal interview with CNN Türk, in which he was forced to speak to the network via a mobile phone and FaceTime.

But the economy's tanked, corruption widespread... it's the undermining of the secular state that the military are unhappy about but the president's supporters (in theory) support.

Who would go to turkey for a holiday? I wouldn't and I think it's about time it was removed from being a holiday destination. The day me and my daughter were coming home from Alcudia there were posters up in Palma airport an even Cardiff airport when we got home saying about the terrorist attack the night before in the airport over there.

Tanks open fire - reports

Tanks have opened fire near the Turkish parliament building, Reuters reports, following similar reports from NTV and local journalists about gunfire in Ankara and Istanbul.

Protesters have heard Erdogan’s call to take to the streets, though, and some are chanting “shoulder to shoulder against the coup”. Others have squared off with military forces who’ve closed bridges and streets. In one video, a policeman and military officer argue in a crowd in the street; in another, cars jammed in traffic honked horns in unison as people mill among them. In a third, a crowd sings and lifts up a huge Turkish flag.

A Bloomberg correspondent in Istanbul tweets:
