I can't swim, and when I was at university I used to walk away from the town up to the end of the beach at night and just stare out over the waves and up at the stars. I was right on the cusp of my domain, as far as I could go, gazing at the beauty of moonlit waves and wheeling constellations. There's a strangely poignant beauty too in standing on the edge of your limitations, peering into the unknowable void beyond. | |||

The piece of classical music that made me realise as a teenager that it was worth listening to too. The first version of it I heard was Ed Alleyne-Johnson's on his purple electric violin (he played fiddle for New Model Army). I played it to my mum and dad and they were amused, then played me the original on a record of theirs.
Incidentally, if you're ever in York of Chester and Ed is busking, do yourself a favour and put your life on hold for a few minutes to listen to him. He's an incredible musician. | |||
