Cure for HIV.....

I heard a very interesting inter_iew on R4 today (I know, I'm sad) about a British research lab that has created a drug the seeks out and destroys the HIV virus, even the tricky dormant bits that we have not been able to target before.

I know that as this is a sex site it's probably a subject that scares the shit out of us (it does me) but what an amazing break through!

I just hope it's not sold at exorbitant prices, as I'm sure that there is a huge huge need in Africa....

Proud to be British today.....

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I heard it too.

There's still a fair way to go but combined with the prophylactic drugs will change our experience of HIV even further.

Of course it might mean we get a rise in drug resistant STIs as we're running out of antibiotics.

I think we run a real risk of drug resistant strains across the board. I am probably in the minority of people that has never had an antibiotic as far as I'm aware, at least not as an adult.

They're given out like sweets.

I had a GP 30 years ago who used to refuse to give antibiotics until you had tried everything else first.

Sadly I still think we are decades off a cure - REALLY hope am wrong.

You are right though, some people on here are reticent to talk properly about HIV, and can very stigmatising in their choice of words.

There is a report out just this week, called PARTNER Study that reveals that positive people on medication are SO very very very unlikely to pass on the virus. The problem really is, those of you who do not know your status.

People MUST get tested!

HIV is a virus, not caused by bacteria. So it doesn't have to affect antibiotics, and the dreadful rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria.

It's great that there's some progress against HIV and it'll likely be 10-15 years before there's much progress: I'm guessing after clinical trials, global approvals, manufacture and agreements etc.

In the meantime, there are medications that can pretty much give the same protection as condoms: although the NHS hasn't agreed to provide them here, meaning HIV infection rates will rise.

If you're interested in greater personal protection, then research medication that can help to protect you.

I know it's a virus. What I meant was that if people feel immune to HIV they are likely to be infected with bacterial STIs and we are running out of options for those.

I think that's because a lot of people are ignorant and feel its a self inflicted disease so now worth acknowledging

A cure would be a fantastic breakthrough

I second your type 1 cure. Its such a pain to have to deal with.

The hiv news is great and a cure can't come soon enough.
