Learning a language

Hereabouts

I've been mildly attempting to learn Greek over the past few months and I'm not all that confident so I feel like a knob speaking Greek to somebody who speaks English too, so I've been a bit shy and reluctant.

Today I've spoken more Greek in one day than I've ever spoken before. Why? Because the person I'm speaking to doesn't speak English!

There's lots of miming going on but I know a couple of words so that helps.

I'm a lot more motivated to learn the language now.

It's hard though so any tips on learning a new language would be great.

Marc can speak about 6 languages. I don't really know how he does it, it's natural to him.

Anyway, he has the hardest time practising Russian so he went online and found a website where people become "penpals" but in a specific language. He was matched with a woman from Siberia who was living in the US and wanted to continue practising her Russian.

It was wonderful. He really enjoyed it and learned from it. It only helps with reading and writing, though. So if you want to practice speech it won't help.

Yeah but my reluctance to try hard enough is stumping all efforts. I'm gonna try harder though

I'd love to know that many languages. I don't think there's enough space in my head though haha.

Reading and writing Greek is something I'll look at when I can speak it... it makes my brain hurt to look at it written down

I'm currently studying Brazilian Portuguese with Pimsleur.

After that I'm going to try my hand at Japanese and Hindi

Edinburgh

I speak fluently 4 languages and rubbish in another 2. I have learnt languages all my life.

I would recommend, Babbel, it is a good app. You can do the free lessons if you don't want to pay.

Youtube is also good to pick up the accent and basic vocabulary.

Don't be embarrassed to watch and use kids books and videos, they are really good.

Usborne books also do languages with an internet link but i am not sure if they do Greek (First thousand words in..., I think it is called)

You can also try your local greek restaurant, am sure they will be happy to practice with you.

Good luck OP and have fun x

Japanese writing and speaking is a nightmare, but good fun

I think immersion does tend to be the best way to learn a language, sort of sink or swim really.
