Views on graffiti ... Ima graffiti writer and I know some tags look scruffy and they shouldn't be done on nice / houses / schools but what do you think of the big pieces with different colours and aesthetically pleasing?

I like them as well, love pictures and art.

I also love the meaningful ones, and even the messy ones that are protesting summat.

There's a local piece of graffiti (it's a very large, colorful hippy mural really) on the end of a range of houses that are Grade 3 listed. The council wants it removed, cue protests.

One of the best protests I heard was the guy who pointed out that if the council is so preoccupied with removing grafitti, perhaps they could do something about the "Sharon takes 3 black cocks" that's been on his kids' walk to school every day for 5 years...

My personal view is that it looks crap.

Don't get me wrong, I admire the talent of some of the artists but whenever you see an 'urban art' project I think it looks like a scruffy mess.

Always makes a place look run down imho even the 'legitimate' projects encouraged by the council.

But live and let live, it might not be to my taste but I'm sure it is to many others

I like it.

Only when consent by the property owner has been given.

Otherwise, it is vandalism and the perpetrator should be pursued and given a criminal sentence.

There is a communications box over the road that gets tagged once a year or so. Luckily, the council is quick to respond when I report it and to repaint it. You find if you leave it, it isn't long before other fuckers think it is alright to add their "paintwork" to other structures.

I am sure that you are more responsible but some buggers have no respect.

Hmmm. Old buildings? Historic buildings? Buildings not owned by anyone? Buildings with owners who have given you consent to paint them? Or do you not bother asking yourself that question?

Great graffiti in Berlin and Melbourne.

Seen some good stuff in Mexico City & Sao Paulo. London, of course, and Bristol has some good flourishes.

Some beautiful stuff in Athens but I was there in 2007, I daresay the city's not quite so pretty these days.

Oh I'm quite sure I would be. It's quite an art to do it well. Sadly most graffiti artists are probably not as talented or skilled and if I look around the graffiti-laden areas of Reading, for example, they look shite!

There's an underpass and adjacent stairs near me all done in graffiti, and all done with the authority of the council and in conjunction with local schools and graffiti artists. Personally I think it looks great and brightens up an otherwise dull underpass.

I'd prefer that people respected property that isn't their own and painted with permission.

I've seen some outstanding graffiti but I also prefer that we all do everything in our power to not contribute to the depredation of our society. A lot of graffiti Imo does that and increases taxes or starves other local services.

Berlin is a great place for it
