"They just changed the rules cos of high court ruling that says women can no longer get cheaper insurance, even though statistically we're safer drivers its sexist or something! i thought all insurance was worked out on stats and probabilities so i dont really know why they got that result, but it does mean that womens premiums have shot up " I thought that was not until 2012?

"Its crazy how these companies work. I got my renewal through and went up by just over £120 pounds, 5 years no claims same company all the time. Did comparison check and same company came out cheapest and cheaper than they were quoting me for the renewal. Phoned them and asked for the internet quote and they wouldnt allow it. Tried to apply online for the cheaper deal but when asked for address and car details as soon as put them in the site declined my application. " I had exactly the same problem with the commercial insurance for my Van. My current insurers renewal quote was nearly 100 quid more than their online quote for a new customer, so I phoned them and asked what the fuck was going on. They managed to reduce it by a couple of quid per month, so I told them to stuff it and went elsewhere and got a quote of not a kick in the arse of what I was already paying. A few days later my current insurers phoned up and asked if I was still considering renewing with them to which I said, "you had your chance a few days ago and now I have a better price" Oh they said, "tell us what it is and we'll match it" I told them to piss off, if that's the way they treat a customer that they've had for almost 7 years I no longer wish to do business with them

"Loyalty cost you a lot of money in so many things, but especially insurance. The key is to shop around and then apply cashback sites into the mix, my insurance last year was £120 after over £100 cash back. Remove things like legal cover, instead of paying the insurance company £30+ but a stand alone policy for £9. At time sit can be far cheaper to take out a new policy than to renew your exisiting one with the same company! " Ain't that the truth! If you pay for your insurance on your credit card will you not have legal cover with it? Just a thought, might save a few more pennies.

"Apparently the reason for the increase in costs is that they are paying out £120 for ever £100 they are getting in. So putting up the prices so they don't go bust. The large outgoings are for all the "hoo my poor neck" claims and wot not. I'd give them sore bloody neck! " It looks like an end may be coming to the 'ooh my poor neck' claims as the government are about to clamp down on the 'no win, no fee' industry - apparently

Try telling the Japanese that! In what other industry can you charge such a sum in exchange for a few seconds to update a piece of information on a screen, and print it out...? Like I said, theyre schysters. I would consider taking my business elsewhere in protest." banks but thats another story

" Indeed.. and also I feel insurances, funded through relatively small contributions by the many, generally speaking are for the benefit of the individual when things have gone wrong.. so an essential necessity in modern society unless you choose to live on an island?

"Read in the paper at the weekend of a teenager who had an accident due to black ice in the wintery weather. His insurance company have quoted him £24k for one year's insurance. Reason - they didn't want his business so hence the ridiculous quote. The cheapest quote he has had is £12k. I dread my son wanting to go on my car insurance, currently I pay £260 fully comp, 9 years+ no claims and I always protect my no claims. AA renewal quote for breakdown was £49, I rang up and got them down to £28. All insurance companies have some negotiation, just ring up and tell them you will move your business elsewhere, or get a quote and play them off against each other." very true, and insurances "specialise" in cetain areas so some will be cheaper for young drivers, others a re better deals for the over 50 ies... and so on. Bottom line is we need insurances

"perhaps im dumb.. ok i am.. but why do i have to pay extra to protect my no claims? surely i'm entitled to them and cant loose them unless i make a claim?" You can protect your 'no claims discount', so that if you do happen to make a claim it doesn't count. However, if you make two claims in one year then you lose them completely.

"perhaps im dumb.. ok i am.. but why do i have to pay extra to protect my no claims? surely i'm entitled to them and cant loose them unless i make a claim?" That's why you pay to protect your no claims, you keep some of them if you do claim, although I know if you have say 60% no claims, they don't necessarily peg your new no claims at that same level after a claim, paying for no claims protection or not. xx

Thats spot on, one of my friends left it till the last minute to renew, he refused to pay the original quote, he said he would try someone else, and eventually got about 70 quid of the original price.

"The Association of British Insurers are forever saying that the industry is paying out £1.20 for every £1 it collects in premiums. They have been quoting this for years, despite large premium increases year on year, and the fact that they seldom pay out the true value of a vehicle when they settle a claim. (Trust me, I have heard every excuse in the book in order to keep the premium high) Personally, I think its a huge scam. No business could operate if they were making a loss like the big organisations keep saying. In reality, the more they can charge you and the less they have to pay out, the more money they make. Its really that simple. The ABI fail to mention that an underhand trick in a total loss scenario is to delay paying out to a 3rd party, in the hope of the 3rd party being short of funds to purchase a replacement vehicle. That way, they get away with paying out considerably less than the market value. They also keep quiet about the billions each year which they make from the trading of the salvage. Schysters, the lot of them....!" Insurance companies also want you to use their approved repairer, or their approved solicitors as they recieve a premium for every customer passed on. In some cases the insurance company recieve more than they pay out. So your insurance company earn from every accident that you make a claim on. If you are not at fault, your insurance company are laughing all the way to the bank.

"New Zealand has it right. 3rd party is included with your road tax. Fully comp is optional you pay for your self. Prices are really low apparently (not verified this told by a kiwi who has lived in the UK for 10 years) 2 years ago my insurance went from £300 to £950. Broker would not shift on the price. Rang another broker and got better cover with the same underwriter for £250!!! " It isn't quite that simple in New Zealand....Third party insurance is not compulsory but the vast majority of New Zealanders hold fully comp insurance in order to cover themselves if an uninsured driver hits them. The road tax does not cover any type of insurance. A lot of North African countries work on the same basis, that third party insurance is not compulsory, difference there being that the majority don't then purchase full comp insurance to cover that.

"Recently sold a 1.8 Diesel and bought a 2.0 Petrol (with the word sport next to it, which never bodes well come insurance time!) either way, it only went up by £30 which was better than expected. Theres no loyalty in insurance anymore (from them, or from us as a result) I'd happily pay whoever was offering me the bare minimum for the least amount of money (other than windscreen cover, which I always have)." ditto ive just sold a 1.9 turbo diesel and bought a 1.8 top spec petrol car my insurance has only gone up £150 for the year... 22, 0 no claims, bad insurance area... only passed in october

"Just over 2 years ago I had a wrx subaru and a type R subaru import.. one cost me £310 to insure, the other £380ish... my Zafira £120 Bare in mind that I couldnt use the no claims on all of them.. However, if I wanted to get another type R subaru now.. it would cost me £1350 to insure the exact same car... although tax isnt to bad on it as its an older car... the tax on the wrx would now be 2nd from highest. Car insurance is just going up and up... Katie. " All this does me make me feel a bit better when I'm getting quoted £1450 for my slk. If people with no claims are paying stupid prices then really I should no qualms given that I'm 24.
