I read in the paper this morning people's car insurances are going up by 20 percent this year. They say due to the fraudulent claims. Great fun.

Well the insurers need something to blame it on and that's as good an excuse as any

As with all things, shop around

NW London

It goes up every year. Cost of crash claims and personal injury etc.

Shop around, don't leave renewal till the last minute and play off companies against each other.

Mine was with Allianz last year and when it came to renewal last month it went up by 50% to 450 quid. When I called and asked why they said it was because of increase in claims in my area. Told them I'd look elsewhere and a quick comparison site managed to get me a higher level of cover with lower excess for 270 quid. As with anything shop around

My renewal with Hastings was £511 this year. Did the meerkat thing and got the same cover with Hastings for £258. So same company, same cover but with two very different prices.

We are trying to get a sensible price for our son who has just turned 17...

Lucky it's only money and not something important...

"We are trying to get a sensible price for our son who has just turned 17...

Might be worth trying Adrian flux on one of their specialist policy's, it's the only place I could get a sensible quote for all the modifications on my car. There's probably about £5000 worth of aftermarket mods declared and I can drive any car covered fully comp since I have the flexidrive policy. So £1400 isn't too ridiculous really.

My brother who's just turned 21 is insured on his 300bhp Subaru with them for £1700. That has a 5k mileage restriction though.

Definitely worth getting a quote, try a limited miles/black box policy.

I just got my renewal quote for this year.

2.9% increase and that's before I telephone to discuss it with them.

I always haggle over my car insurance.

I usually do comparison quotes, chose the best and ask my company to match it. I switch if they can't.

Two years ago I decided I couldn't be arsed with searches. I decided what I thought it would be reasonable to pay, which was around 15% less than the renewal quote. I chose a small insurance company, which I was sure wouldn't be connected to my insurer's systems. I called my insurer and told them the small company had guven me a quote of the amount I wanted to pay and asked if they could match it.

They said no, they could get close but not match it, so I said ok, thanks, cancel my policy and I'll switch. They called me back almost as soon as I'd hung up and matched my invented deal.

I suspect it's heavily modded and tuned to around 6000bhp

Knowing their taste in cars.

"Mines not due till October. I do feel for some people."

Mine's due at the end of this month. As I said they want less than 3% more than last year and that's before I argue.

I'm aiming for less than last year. I've another accident free year behind me and the car is worth less this year than it was last year

I saved over £900 on my car insurance this time. Last year it was nearly £1400 as a new driver, this year down to less than £500

Sadly just 140, it's slow with all the weight it's carrying!

Hard to believe but car insurers rarely make money it is generally a loss leader. Uninsured drivers spurity whiplash claims etc add around £100 to every ones bill.

ALWAYS shop around use a comparison site etc. Insurers depend on customer inertia hence your price goes up because you don query. Younger drivers look at marmalade and similar and use the black box etc to keep the premiums down and always keep your proof of no claims as that has cost me in the past

Does that really work?? If i call up and say "i got a quote from Viente insurers Ltd for £[insert 15% off best quote here], can you more or goodbye" , will they really match??

I don't think so...........

It did on that occasion. I only did it once when I couldn't be arsed to go through comparison sites.

I didn't expect them to ring back. What I'd decided to do was look round for a better deal and failing that, call them back, tell them I'd changed my mind and wanted to renew after all and accept the lowest quote I could get them down to.
