The term half caste

I just saw an account on here which described the male as this term. I know I have a way of upsetting people on here by highlighting certain things but I kindly explained that this term was derogatory to use as in the days of slavery, white slave masters would unfasten the shackles (casts) which fastened the legs together and do their thing by force and sometimes produce mixed race babies. Not only is this term pre 90's if you were fully PC the term I was last aware of was dual heritage.

I wonder why some folk use such terms to fit in but I suppose that this thread is really to see how many folk still use this term and with this knowledge, how many will continue to use the term Half-caste?

It's what we used to say , I only in the last few years knew it had now changed to mixed race .

I must come over as racist , or whatever , but some people don't know the new p.c. Lingo etc ...

I have often heard of my daughters referred to half caste i can say i dont have a problem with it, however i tend to used mix race is this considered offensive ?

Not that I'm aware but like my op says I think the latest PC term is dual heritage.

I struggle to keep up myself but I know enough not to say half cast anymore

It's not from the shackles it is from the caste (as stated above).

It was used in a derogatory way and to ostracise groups of people - being not one thing nor the other - but a general acceptance that 'black' is lower than 'white' so anyone tinged with 'black' must also be lower, but maybe a little higher than 'black'.

I thought it was of reference to the caste system of India where a child was born of the (forbidden) Union of two people of differing levels...

When I was a kid half caste was one black parent,one white. The last person who used the term was a mixed race woman.

Indeed, it's a derogatory term but as I said, if you're going to "educate" people with facts, check them first. This is a particularly a good idea if you decide to lecture an entire forum on the subject from your moral high ground.

Isn't it funny how some of those you're educating turned out to know more than you? Apparently your assumption that many of us are clueless wasn't entirely on the mark.

How many people have you seen/heard use the term recently? Many? If not, why assume it was anything more than a one off and something people need your education on?

Being deemed half caste myself by certain people when growing up I always felt this description was negative. A way of labelling and controlling people. Much like race. I had thought it derived from the Indian caste system though originally.

The problem is, that there is no manual to inform us how to describe people of different body types without offending anyone.

No one knows what is offensive or not or what is PC, and we'll go on blundering about causing b offence in one way or another

If we are not PC, are we, by default, offensive ?

When did we become so sensitive to the use of certain terms ?

Are those born, for example, in the UK, from lineages that have lived here for decades (or centuries) 'dual heritage' or are they of the same heritage but simply of different colour ?

The term half caste was coined when children were born with characteristics of one parent and characteristics of the other. e.g. a skin lighter than one parent or darker than the other parent.

I'd check your source for the rape definition.

I'm not saying abuse of women slaves didn't happen. I'm saying that there seems to be a confusion of the word cast and caste.

Here in South Shields years ago we were called Sand dancers (explanation too long to go in to here) as a derogatory term.

Now in 2016 we look on it with pride and are proud of the term

Talking of Heritage (massive word) personally I'm of the "Out of Africa" opinion. Its accepted we all originated on the African continent - ALL Oriental Asian whoever from a very small ( possibly 1 individual) gene pool

Nature changed our physiology to cope with our new environments which changed eye shape, colour, height build etc. so we really are all from the same flesh and blood.

Until we accept this and the fact that we are closely related to each other and share the exact same heritage ( not selecting the bits of history that suit us) - nothing will change.

Indians have the caste system (which is rife with it's own form of bigotry and racism) and was used as a derogatory term. It is.......white was seen as pure. So if you were "half caste" you were only half pure...and by implication half impure. The term is therefore, right,y seen as derogatory at the least and can be seen (by some if not all) as racist.

The term was in use long before the days of mass slavery in the colony's etc. Romans had many slaves/servants from conquered countries and would often use them for sex too so the implication is still the same!

My son-in-law is white, my grandsons mixed race so I thought, until I read on here funnily enough that the new terminology is dual heritage.

I have yet to hear a black or mixed race person say mixed race is offensive. Many mixed race people describe themselves that way. I'll stick with it.

Dual heritage sounds ridiculous and is probably inaccurate in most cases. White people and black people can still have a mixed heritage and probably have more than two in the mix.

Half caste was a common expression when I was young but it's never been part of my vocabulary. It just didn't sound nice.

We had two friends called Jill. To differentiate one was black Jill,one was blonde Jill. The easiest way to differentiate is by colour,albeit skin,hair,eyes etc. If they are the same then it would be age or height/weight probably.

Just a bit. I don't remember when people started saying mixed race,it just sort of happened. There are a lot more races mixed nowadays. Back in medieval times when I was a kid I only knew black/white and my half Chinese friend. I didn't go out of my town very often though.

There's so many terms we're all so scared to use incase it upsets someone. But there is something I absolutely hate. We've been through all the terms for someone who is black. I think the one we all cringe at now is the "N" word yet I often hear black guys (usually) welcoming each other with the "N" word it confuses the hell out of me why they would use it

It's not just on matters of race though that this kinda stuff goes on is it ?

I have extracted a chunk of a speech on homophobia given by Panti Bliss which kinda sums up this mad world in which we live where others get to define who we are :

"Three weeks ago I was on the television and I said that I believed that people who actively campaign for gay people to be treated less or differently are, in my gay opinion, homophobic.

Some people, people who actively campaign for gay people to be treated less under the law took great exception at this characterisation and threatened legal action against me and RTÉ.

RTÉ, in its wisdom, decided incredibly quickly to hand over a huge sum of money to make it go away. I haven't been so lucky.

And for the last three weeks I have been lectured by heterosexual people about what homophobia is and who should be allowed identify it.

Straight people - ministers, senators, lawyers, journalists - have lined up to tell me what homophobia is and what I am allowed to feel oppressed by.

People who have never experienced homophobia in their lives, people who have never checked themselves at a pedestrian crossing, have told me that unless I am being thrown in prison or herded onto a cattle train, then it is not homophobia.

And that feels oppressive.

So now Irish gay people find ourselves in a ludicrous situation where not only are we not allowed to say publicly what we feel oppressed by, we are not even allowed to think it because our definition has been disallowed by our betters.

And for the last three weeks I have been denounced from the floor of parliament to newspaper columns to the seething morass of internet commentary for "hate speech" because I dared to use the word "homophobia". And a jumped-up queer like me should know that the word "homophobia" is no longer available to gay people.

Which is a spectacular and neat Orwellian trick because now it turns out that gay people are not the victims of homophobia - homophobes are."
