The term half caste

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I just saw an account on here which described the male as this term. I know I have a way of upsetting people on here by highlighting certain things but I kindly explained that this term was derogatory to use as in the days of slavery, white slave masters would unfasten the shackles (casts) which fastened the legs together and do their thing by force and sometimes produce mixed race babies. Not only is this term pre 90's if you were fully PC the term I was last aware of was dual heritage.

I wonder why some folk use such terms to fit in but I suppose that this thread is really to see how many folk still use this term and with this knowledge, how many will continue to use the term Half-caste?

Is it that bad a question. I will pipe right down if the things I say are too abrasive but I can't see why there is a discussion section if we can't discuss things other than sex - after all the world we live in is forever evolving

So is caste using being incorrectly as per the English Oxford dictionary it is defined as the following

caste

k??st/Submit

noun

each of the hereditary classes of Hindu society, distinguished by relative degrees of ritual purity or pollution and of social status.

"members of the lower castes"

synonyms: class, social class, order, social order, social division, grade, grading, group, grouping, station, stratum, echelon, rank, level, degree, set; More

the system of dividing society into castes.

"caste has survived among Goa's Christians"

any class or group of people who inherit exclusive privileges or are perceived as socially distinct.

"those educated in private schools belong to a privileged caste"

Not that I'm aware but like my op says I think the latest PC term is dual heritage.

I struggle to keep up myself but I know enough not to say half cast anymore

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

It's not from the shackles it is from the caste (as stated above).

It was used in a derogatory way and to ostracise groups of people - being not one thing nor the other - but a general acceptance that 'black' is lower than 'white' so anyone tinged with 'black' must also be lower, but maybe a little higher than 'black'.

After all, when trying to educate people, it is good to be certain of one's facts.

"And without biting Clem it doesn't change the fact the term is now deemed derogatory - now what?"

Indeed, it's a derogatory term but as I said, if you're going to "educate" people with facts, check them first. This is a particularly a good idea if you decide to lecture an entire forum on the subject from your moral high ground.

Isn't it funny how some of those you're educating turned out to know more than you? Apparently your assumption that many of us are clueless wasn't entirely on the mark.

How many people have you seen/heard use the term recently? Many? If not, why assume it was anything more than a one off and something people need your education on?

PS Please don't be narky about people educating you and showing you to be wrong. That's what you were trying to do to others.

Being deemed half caste myself by certain people when growing up I always felt this description was negative. A way of labelling and controlling people. Much like race. I had thought it derived from the Indian caste system though originally.

Me too. I was sometimes called by the Spanish term Mulatto by the very polite. Although my mix is a little murkier than black/white.

"It's not from the shackles it is from the caste (as stated above).

It was used in a derogatory way and to ostracise groups of people - being not one thing nor the other - but a general acceptance that 'black' is lower than 'white' so anyone tinged with 'black' must also be lower, but maybe a little higher than 'black'.

Mine too. When I was younger such terms angered me now I just realise some people will always try to subjugate others. With terms or force. I'm proud of my background. As anyone should be

The problem is, that there is no manual to inform us how to describe people of different body types without offending anyone.

No one knows what is offensive or not or what is PC, and we'll go on blundering about causing b offence in one way or another

I just refer to someone as a person

I don't know what terms to use for anything anymore. Fact is, someone will be offended no matter what term is used. It's not worth worrying about.

If we are not PC, are we, by default, offensive ?

When did we become so sensitive to the use of certain terms ?

Are those born, for example, in the UK, from lineages that have lived here for decades (or centuries) 'dual heritage' or are they of the same heritage but simply of different colour ?

I'm 55. When I was growing up half caste was one black parent, one white parent. My parents referred to any Asian as a cooley, chinaman for every oriental, bubu for every African, THESE PEOPLE!!! for whites and funny funny nations for everyone else: to them it was a descriptor I thought it not nice as the word derogatory wasn't in vocabulary then, neither hypocrite as they were offended by coon and nignog.

Half caste is derogatory and not a word I've heard in years!

My son-in-law is white, my grandsons mixed race so I thought, until I read on here funnily enough that the new terminology is dual heritage.

Sigh...can't keep up, will just have to call them my little pickles.

O.P.

The term half caste was coined when children were born with characteristics of one parent and characteristics of the other. e.g. a skin lighter than one parent or darker than the other parent.

I'd check your source for the rape definition.

I'm not saying abuse of women slaves didn't happen. I'm saying that there seems to be a confusion of the word cast and caste.

P.S. I see no harm in the term half-caste but it implies a fifty fifty split so I guess mixed race is best and just to drive me even more insane I think we are ALL mixed race.

I have yet to hear a black or mixed race person say mixed race is offensive. Many mixed race people describe themselves that way. I'll stick with it.

Dual heritage sounds ridiculous and is probably inaccurate in most cases. White people and black people can still have a mixed heritage and probably have more than two in the mix.

Half caste was a common expression when I was young but it's never been part of my vocabulary. It just didn't sound nice.

How does anyone know? I mean, when I look at ambiguously brown people I don't think, oh they're Spanish/Middle Eastern/mixed race. Not sure if I am ridiculously unobservant or just not up on the defining racial characteristics that others seem to just know.

Sad thing is when some are so terrified to use language for fear of reprisals, depending on what is in or out.

Talking of Heritage (massive word) personally I'm of the "Out of Africa" opinion. Its accepted we all originated on the African continent - ALL Oriental Asian whoever from a very small ( possibly 1 individual) gene pool

Nature changed our physiology to cope with our new environments which changed eye shape, colour, height build etc. so we really are all from the same flesh and blood.

Until we accept this and the fact that we are closely related to each other and share the exact same heritage ( not selecting the bits of history that suit us) - nothing will change.

I wonder why some folk use such terms to fit in but I suppose that this thread is really to see how many folk still use this term and with this knowledge, how many will continue to use the term Half-caste?"

I was under the impression that the term 'half caste' went back to the days of the Raj, when the mixed Indian/White babies were born. Indians have the caste system (which is rife with it's own form of bigotry and racism) and was used as a derogatory term. It is not a term that has a place in today's society, especially given it's roots.

I'm forever having this conversation with frightened white folk at work. "Just describe me as the short, handsome black fella with glasses" I say.

I'll happily point someone out as the "The young Asian girl with the red headscarf" or "The white guy in the blue shirt sitting next to the Sikh lad with the green turban." All descriptions accurate, none offensive.

I think you mean John and please refer to him as the tall fella with the fucking stupid haircut.

I've lost count of the number of ways that people try to avoid describing people by their colour......so stupid.

It's become a source of amusement in work .... the woman with the red dress.... she works with Jane..... she's got specs.. you know... she likes milk in her coffee....... she went to see the Bond film last night .... she drives an audi..... she picked Tula's name in the Christmas Draw.. She's lovelyyyy.. you were talking to her yesterday at break.... Oh the black woman ? Yeah.

There'll always be racism when attitudes like yours remain. Granny by name granny by nature.

It's people like you that are the problem. Granny's post was not racist. If, like me, you've read a lot of her posts over the years you will know she is far from racist. Now, if you wanted to accuse her of being a misandrist...

Sorry but thankfully I haven't been on here for years

I'd already debated earlier in the thread. Name calling isn't actually mature is it? Like I said you have your opinion I have mine. Most people I know wouldn't entertain the term Half Caste and haven't for years. It's not exactly new!!!

"I always thought it was derived from the Latin term castus meaning pure, oh well learn something new everyday "

It is.......white was seen as pure. So if you were "half caste" you were only half pure...and by implication half impure. The term is therefore, right,y seen as derogatory at the least and can be seen (by some if not all) as racist.

The term was in use long before the days of mass slavery in the colony's etc. Romans had many slaves/servants from conquered countries and would often use them for sex too so the implication is still the same!

I think dual heritage is ridiculous too...who comes up with this shit?

White people probably. We know so much better than anyone else what minority groups find offensive "

God save us from the well intended as they pave the way to hell.

Sorry, disagree: it's attitudes like yours that's a problem for me. I'm black, describing me as such is not offensive in anyway shape or form.

Assuming offence on my behalf where there's none leads to cries of "pc gone mad, chips on shoulder" when the reality is I didn't give a fuck but assumed "sensitive" when I didn't see offense.

We had two friends called Jill. To differentiate one was black Jill, one was blonde Jill. The easiest way to differentiate is by colour, albeit skin, hair, eyes etc. If they are the same then it would be age or height/weight probably.

Indeed it is. Just like some people don't like being called faggots or other derogatory terms. Some don't mind. I personally wouldn't use those terms but some would. Doesn't make it right. The term Half Caste has been known to be derogatory for decades and anyone who pretends otherwise is either stupid or racist.

It wasn't derogatory when we used it 40 odd years ago,it was to describe a physical attribute. No one said mixed race back then. My chinese/English friend used to call himself a half chat. Fuck knows where that originated from,I'm guessing a London thing.

"Some ppl take offence to being called black. Some dont. Thats life

Don't think so , unless it spread like nits...... We used it here too.

And dwarfs.

Challenged implies a disability and is therefore fascistly judgemental.

Just a bit. I don't remember when people started saying mixed race,it just sort of happened. There are a lot more races mixed nowadays. Back in medieval times when I was a kid I only knew black/white and my half Chinese friend. I didn't go out of my town very often though.

I have a disabled, albino friend. He refers to himself as spastic among other things. His "crew" use similar words to describe themselves.

Do you know what? It hasn't crossed my mind to join in with how they describe themselves or want to as I recognise I'm not a disabled albino and don't attribute any "ist" to myself.

Sigh...

It's children who pick up on these names and get into trouble for using them. Try explaining to a 5 yr old why he can't use words he knows aren't swear words.

There's so many terms we're all so scared to use incase it upsets someone. But there is something I absolutely hate. We've been through all the terms for someone who is black. I think the one we all cringe at now is the "N" word yet I often hear black guys (usually) welcoming each other with the "N" word it confuses the hell out of me why they would use it

It's not just on matters of race though that this kinda stuff goes on is it ?

I have extracted a chunk of a speech on homophobia given by Panti Bliss which kinda sums up this mad world in which we live where others get to define who we are :

"Three weeks ago I was on the television and I said that I believed that people who actively campaign for gay people to be treated less or differently are, in my gay opinion, homophobic.

Some people, people who actively campaign for gay people to be treated less under the law took great exception at this characterisation and threatened legal action against me and RTÉ.

RTÉ, in its wisdom, decided incredibly quickly to hand over a huge sum of money to make it go away. I haven't been so lucky.

And for the last three weeks I have been lectured by heterosexual people about what homophobia is and who should be allowed identify it.

Straight people - ministers, senators, lawyers, journalists - have lined up to tell me what homophobia is and what I am allowed to feel oppressed by.

People who have never experienced homophobia in their lives, people who have never checked themselves at a pedestrian crossing, have told me that unless I am being thrown in prison or herded onto a cattle train, then it is not homophobia.

And that feels oppressive.

So now Irish gay people find ourselves in a ludicrous situation where not only are we not allowed to say publicly what we feel oppressed by, we are not even allowed to think it because our definition has been disallowed by our betters.

And for the last three weeks I have been denounced from the floor of parliament to newspaper columns to the seething morass of internet commentary for "hate speech" because I dared to use the word "homophobia". And a jumped-up queer like me should know that the word "homophobia" is no longer available to gay people.

Which is a spectacular and neat Orwellian trick because now it turns out that gay people are not the victims of homophobia - homophobes are."
