If you want to give it a try find a PADI school and learn with them. It was easier than with the BSAC to qualify.

Best diving is in open water but you need training before you can start exploring.

Also if diving in UK waters you will need to get yourself a dry suit, its just too cold for wet suits no matter how thick!

You need to be proficient to a certain level before they'll let you loose in open water to enjoy to sights. There's a lot of technical stuff and figures to get your head around. Give the taster a try as not everyone can cope though as long as you haven't got any medical issues a good instructor will get you through the basics.

The basic qualification is the PADI open water. You could do it on holiday but it does take a certain length of time and includes classroom work so if you really want to do it do it before you go. Like anything get some recommendations for a dive school or club - it's not a cheap hobby and you're putting yourself in an alien environment dependant on the equipment and their skill and instruction.

Most dive centres hire out equipment til you buy your own when you decide you love it.

Usually a good crowd and socialising involved too.

Enjoy

Cool, I rushed in when I started playing golf and bought a load of rubbish so it's good you don't have to buy all you're own stuff before you can start

There are three main schools of certification;

BSAC - British Sub aqua Club

PADI

& NAUI

Each has their own method of teaching; you'll probably find that PADI will get you diving faster with the OW open water qualification; but you should really get the AOW Advanced open water.

You can do that within a fortnight of daily training on a holiday.

BSAC is more class based at first and you need the theory sorted before you go open water.

I know BSAC training has changed over the years;

But I did the BSAC 1 & 2 quals in the UK and then PADI AOW when on holiday.

I think I got the best of both systems that way

I've dived all over the Med and the Red Sea, logging over 200 dives, but sadly not in the last ten + years since the sprogs came along.

Your local BSAC clubs will do taster and try a dive sessions at the local pool

Give it a go, you won't regret it

Don't worry, it will soon be explained to you. But as many others have said, give it a go and don' go buying equipment until you know what you are doing. As an aside, if you own you own tanks and compressor the costs are not as bad as if you have to hire or have tanks filled for you.

You only need tanks and compressor if you're diving here in the UK, which means a drysuit too

I'm a warm water diver

If you ever get to the spending stage a good wetsuit that fits properly and mask and fins are the essential buys.

After that I'd go for BCD (inflatable vest) and octopus- mouth regulators

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Padi.. Definitely

Far better recognised..if you lose your dive card most places can contact Padi to get your info.

Don't be put off by your first dive in a pool.. They can be murky and a little bit disorientating because it's all tiled..

If you do decide to do your qualification dives in the UK, stony cove is the best place, can be pretty busy.. Invariably you will have to go where your dive group goes.

Alternatively do a referral in Mexico.. Diving is great out there.

Kit.. You will get to know what you want.. And get kit envy too!

Fins, mask and wetsuit and booties is really the basics.

You can get pretty good bargains on ebay if you want to get a bcd or regulators.

Advanced qualification is well worth getting as you are not then restricted to 18m dive depth.

Have fun, it's a great hobby.

The RM/RN will pay you to learn to dive and train you on bubbleless kit! but you do need to sign up for 5 years. LoL

You'd be better off doing a taster session somewhere it's enjoyable like Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc.

the most 'enjoyable' diving is in warm clear water, with well populated healthy reefs.

Done my levels, started in the pool and I enjoyed it. Not done it for years though.

Caribbean was great for diving. I know a lady that still dives at age 74, she likes to go to Cuba and Mexico.

Busy being a mum lol. But they are teenagers now so no doubt I can now do it with them.

I use to windsurfing too, doing that with them this summer if the board can cope with my extra weight lol

But you don't really forget that stuff. You can always go back to it later in life

"Hi as a Padi instructor its good to do the basics in a pool. Its fantastic sport. Mexico is in top 10 places to dive.

Have fun be safe.

Done my levels, started in the pool and I enjoyed it. Not done it for years though.

Caribbean was great for diving. I know a lady that still dives at age 74, she likes to go to Cuba and Mexico.

Try it in the pool and see if it's for you. Have fun

Awesome. I have been looking at you tube, people diving at the farne Islands, now that looks cool.

Can I ask why you stopped diving ?

Busy being a mum lol. But they are teenagers now so no doubt I can now do it with them.

I use to windsurfing too, doing that with them this summer if the board can cope with my extra weight lol

But you don't really forget that stuff. You can always go back to it later in life

I hang out with a bunch of divers from time to time so can totally vouch for the social side. I'm not a fan of the depth of the sea though and I'm seasick so generally puke from the boat while they're underneath. It's just as well they love me really!

I am a PADI Divemaster who dives regularly in the West Coast of Scotland

Yes people will tell you the Maldives, Red Sea, Cancun etc etc etc are great pales to dive however they are so popular they get overcrowded.

Up here the diversity of diving is just as good if not better. Once you get over the colder water, which is combated

with a dry suit, and the visibility which can be temperamental there is some cracking dive spots in Scotland

PADI Open Water is where to begin, 4 mornings in a classroom followed by 2 pool dives and 2 open water dives and you are set loose up to a depth of 18m

Once your comfortable go back and do the Advanced. 10 speciality dives and that's you able to dive deeper.

That is all you require to dive worldwide. PADI have other specialists dive badges you can gain but in reality the AOW is your ticket and it is a WORLD wide recognition

BSAC are British and it can take up to a year before you gain your first open water dive. Some of us have recorded over 50 dives by then

I really enjoyed it, I did the skills and then spent most of my time dragging myself along the bottom of the pool lol but once I managed to to add air to the bcd correctly I like a fish

"No one ?used to be..not any more x

Is it fun or just not very enjoyable ?depends if you want to do it properly there are alot of lectures and levels to attain...i found that after being around it for years and going to deeper depths my ears would not handle the pressure..ive done it but in all honesty i prefer snorkelling x

Ok, there is a place near me where you can try it in a pool, I might give it a go and see if it's for me or not xyes its a taster session..go for it..just know its quite an expensive hobby with insurance and gear..but you should definitely give it a go if you've never tried it..you might love it x

I'm aware of the money side of it and that doesn't worry me. I will let you know how I get on x"

I have still got to grapple with treading water.

Well I was scrapping my belly along the bottom like a ray but I think the other divers may have thought I looked more like a "clown" not a clown fish
