They will shut the child heart surgery unit at the royal brompton hospital and it is causing outcry. I thought nhs would be getting more funding? What is your thoughts?

Yes, they talked about it on bbc London news yesterday and one of the points was, it said the Brompton did not meet new national standards for the number of operations carried out each year and was “extremely unlikely to be able to do so” by the 2021 deadline. It is strange as it happens weeks after brexit tho?

Are they just choosing the heart unit or the whole hospital ?

There's been a review this week of the provision of all heat surgeries practices across England

I heard they were cutting down on heart procedures due to lack of competence within this area and low success rate, read that yesterday, think it was BBC news if I remember right

Cardiff

So the background to this is that doctors have reviewed the success rate of these procedures and established that the success rate is too low, partially due to too few procedures being carried out. So as a result clinicians have decided that these procedures should be carried out in fewer specialised units.

Any other questions?

Ah, it is one of the congenital heart surgeries.

Yes, the NHS guidelines are being applied then.

There have to be X operations per surgeoon with a Y success rate.

It does seem a reasonable approach all in all. People would be screaming in the event of an unsuccessful unit being allowed to continue.

Nottingham

They are closing the children's heart surgery unit at the glenfield hospital in Leicester too. This was planned some time ago and the decision was reversed after a campaign by families and local people. They changed their mind again and said it has to close

They have been trying to reduce the number of children's cardiac surgery centre for 15 years.

I wouldn't hold your breath.

That was originally the case with the Brompton too. The campaign held off the closure for a while but the new practice is being applied across the board now.
