I am sure some countries must dislike us due to how our governments behave abroad.

Thank you for your comment. I believe it's such a scary subject to talk about now, which is why there are major problems.

There is nothing wrong with having _iews and opinions.

I will disagree with you with the "race card" though.. 96% of the time.. When a black person crus for racism. It usually is.

You shouldn't take that personally. I'm only staying my _iews.

Chester

No racists at all in my lot, grew up with an Indian best friend and my only real interest was coming home from school to go and play and learn some Hindi, which just made her extra cool! Although there weren't many non white people in my schools, there was never any consideration given to any of it, by anyone in the schools from what I could tell, in the same way eye colour or hair length was treated, it never mentioned outside of a descriptor that may be used at times. A very naive upbringing in that respect, I can still remember the first time I met someone who was out and out racist. A blind date, my jaw literally hit the floor and the ginger temper came out! Nowadays I will either challenge their ideas, or take the mick out of them for having such ridiculous notions.

Many different forms. From out and out racism, through to the Brexit vote for instance, I.e 'taking our country back' slogan which is aimed at anyone who wasn't born British

I take nothing personally as I know where I stand all humans should be treated the same no matter of race or religion but we all know we live in a world where that don't happen and I will stand by the race card thing as we se it on here all the time just saying no to someone can make someone play the race card

Yeah my dad is like this. He's in his 70's so hardly likely to change now. My main worry was him making comments in front of my 11 year old son but not so much now because my boy challenges him and says he's not going to talk to him if he's just going to say stupid things. Then my dad sulks! Love my boy

Just a fact check on the all black colleges in America. There are historically black colleges where 75%+ are black. However what you need to remember is they were established during segregation when black people weren't permitted or when there were severe barriers into admitting blacks into colleges. They are established to give them the smae opportunity to learn and have remained after segregation was abolished as a symbol of the education they fought for. There didn't need to be all white colleges establised because they already exisited.

Yes, I do. What do I do about it? Mostly I argue with them. Usually around Thanksgiving and Christmas eve.

Their attitudes are largely irrational, though, so there isn't much I can do. My aunt married into a family of which many are racists...when we are together during the holidays political discussions become almost like a sport of mockery. I couldn't even describe the level of racism without probably getting put on the naughty step.

There isn't really much to do about it, though. Most of the racists in my family are old, so their influence is waning.

I get realy annoyed at people who make comments about travellers and gypsys calling them pikes etc. When it's pointed out to them it's a racist comment they go on the defensive xx marie x

My mum is quite racist. When I was a toddler she forbade me to paddle in a local fountain if Asian kids were in there as they made the water dirty.

Another time my dad was taking me to the same park and asked if I wanted to go and have a paddle. He was shocked at what I had been taught.

My mum is still racist, though not the type to join the BNP or anything like that...she is prejudiced.

Oddly before she met my dad she was engaged to an Indian doctor.

I don't have close relatives that are racist.

My mum is 80. One of the things I'm most proud of is that she will quietly but firmly put across the opposing _iew when her friends talk about immigration in a racist way.

She worked in the health service in the 1960s and talks fondly about the first wave of Asian doctors and nurses who came here and were brilliant at their jobs.

She's not naive and she does question things like the levels of immigration, but there's something very positive about seeing an older person who is open-minded, questioning and prepared to see differing _iewpoints.

I love her very much

Anita's grandma (who wouldn't approve of being discussed on a swinging site) is quite racist, at 94 I feel it's a bit late to do much about it though.

We have had to explain to her that the optician may look Indian, but he's got a Geordie accent and is probably 2nd or 3rd generation British.

Although we never support her _iews and try to educate her when possible, she was born and raised in different era and her experience over nearly a century have warped her _iews.

I would like to think I'm not racist either

Sure there are people of all nationalities I don't like but that comes down to them as individuals not because of where they come from or the colour of their skin

Im a district nurse and I go into all people, different colours, different religions, immigrants you name it if they need medical care I go into them and everybody get the same level of care and understanding from me

To be racist is to believe you have superiority over another/all races.

Hitler was a racist..

Nowadays the term racist is thrown about without the sound knowledge of the definition, its more likely somebody dislikes an architype or particular group of people, im pretty confident everyone hates ISIS and there extremist _iews but doesnt dislike all muslims and there belief system

My dad is racist and homophobic. He thinks he's hilarious when he tells me his racist jokes.. it's always made me angry but my dad is set in his ways and hardly listens to me. It still angers me now but I've distanced myself from him a lot as I've grown up. My sister says I should just accept him as he is and get over it but I can't.

He's puts on a good face to his friends but he's not a genuinely nice person.

I don't know if my mother's engagement to an Indian doctor resulted in her racism. I think more likely it was living near Bradford when immigrants started moving into Lumb Lane. She still talks about it. It was also my mother who taught me the phrase "paki shop". While walking around said establishment, I asked her "Mummy, why is it called the paki shop?" only to be told to shut up and receive a clip around the ear.

She's also pretty homophobic and thinks very bad jokes involving Freddie Mercury are the height of sophisticated humour.

I have no idea how my parents remained married for 38 years and am grateful I take more after my late father.

Interesting that a poster mentions foreign doctors and nurses in the NHS. My mother was a nurse in the NHS from 1965-1985, rising to ward sister and did have nothing but praise for the foreign docs and nurses...but she's still racist. When I married an American, one of her comments was "at least he didn't bring a black girl home".

Sometimes I make a generalised opinion concerning a particular group of people based on their culture and up-bringing. If that is classified as racist, then I am one.

What I noticed is the issue of racist is usually being brought up by those who are.

Just my honest opinion.

Yeah, I rarely speak to them or associate myself with them. Only at family get togethers, even then contact is minimal.

Unless you hate another race or believe to be superior to it, what you're describing is stereotyping.

So for example Polish people love vodka and are slowly invading the word by immigration . (I'm Polish by the way it's okay just a joke).

"the race card get used so many times now no wonder no one ever talks anymore oh and before anyone jumps on me I only belive in one race and that's the human race just like theres only one sex and that is what ever you want to be "

"Playing the race card" is a phrase used by the dominant (white) society in order to silence the _iews of those who are non-caucasian. It is not a good phrase. In fact, it's a pretty racist thing to even believe that there is such a thing as a 'race card'.

Racism shouldn't be compared to a card game. It's not fun.

Usually phrases like 'they pulled the race card' are followed by phrases like 'I only believe in one race, that's the human race'. Being 'colour blind' is ignorant and is itself part of a racist ideology. It encourages the idea that non-caucasian people just have to work harder and help themselves, because otherwise they'd be equal now. It ignores the fact that non-caucasians have been repeatedly shit on by white people in the western world. Being 'blind' to colour or gender ignores the things that make people them. It ignores shared and divided histories and prevents people from truly being themselves when their heritage/gender is an important part of them.

Racism is the systematic oppression of a a group of people based on their skin colour and/or heritage.

White people aren't systematically oppressed in the vast majority of the world.

You just can't change some people _iews no matter how hard you try and some people don't appreciate you trying

She's always making rude references to me, even managed to get a few voting in the EU and foreigners digs in when asking how i voted

Uncomfortable question to answer, but conversation is good.

There is racist everywhere

Whether it's against blacks white Asians

Gays lesbian anyone and everything

But it always seems to be the white person that gets it in the neck

Go to America there is all black colleges and university's

Go to a Muslim are there will be all Muslim schools and such like

If there was an all white one it would be closed down in a week

It's funny, because I went to a university that was basically all white. And most universities in this country are almost all white.

We don't need all white universities, we already have them. But an all female programme or an all african-american programme could really help to give a leg up in areas where people struggle to break into cultures/careers dominated by male/white individuals.

I don't understand how positive discrimination is a solution to anything. You don't need special universities or schools to break through male/white dominated careers. For people with correct attitude there are no obstacles that can't be crossed.

If a place is excluding people based on race or gender how is the correct attitude gonna help them get anywhere?

I'm sure that is not the only place in the world. People travel the world to do what they want because it is not available to them where they live. I understand what you're trying to say but there's always another way.

we don't have financial equality. travelling is not always an option.

because we created all this mess we have to do things to correct it. it's gonna take ages though. the earth will be sucked into a black hole before humans learn to live in perfect harmony lol"

yeah probably.

My uncle was a shocking racist, but I will be fair.

He actually didn't like anyone, so I don't think it was just a race issue. More of a people issue.

"When you are talking about racism are you talking all forms? All levels?

How many different forms are there.

Enlighten me?

Many different forms. From out and out racism, through to the Brexit vote for instance, I.e 'taking our country back' slogan which is aimed at anyone who wasn't born British

I think there are differing levels too. My parents are what I would call generational racists, have their _iews but still embrace their neighbours & get on with them well.

There's a better word for people like your parents. It's called 'hypocrites'."

I'm not so sure about this. In our country people are entitled to their own beliefs. What they are not entitled to do is discriminate against or abuse people based on their beliefs. So my dad has a very negative _iew of muslims, encouraged by the crap press he reads and his brothers who are pro britain-first. We may find his _iews abhorrent. We can and should challenge them. But what it comes down to is they are his _iews and he is entitled to have them. Would he abuse muslims or refuse to serve them in his shop? No because A. he can act civilised and B. It would be illegal. Hypocrisy? Maybe. But I guess that's why discrimination and hate crime laws exist.

I'm glad this post has got people being open and honest.

What frustrates me is when people stay stay silent about it. Conversation is good.

Everyone is entitled to their _iews... It becomes a problem when the _iews stop you from sitting next to someone, or giving somebody a job.

It seems from the responses that the racists in the family are all over 70... Although I believe the average age is 45.

At the same time , if you live outside of a city, then it's inevitable you will be racist because there are no other races around. I don't blame them.

Racism against white people ONLY occurs due to what's happened in the past and still happening now daily, kind of like "self defence".

My heart goes out to the white people that really feel bad about what is happening and are getting lumped in with the racists. It's up to you to talk up and stand out...

Or continue as normal..

Am I racist?

NO.. Not at all.

Yeah you're probably right they are....

You could also look at it another way as well, that they keep their opinions to themselves, are good neighbours & they get on with others.

Some of the things he says is just shocking

Sadly I have no choice but to work with her

You just can't change some people _iews no matter how hard you try and some people don't appreciate you trying

She's always making rude references to me, even managed to get a few voting in the EU and foreigners digs in when asking how i voted

Luckily I have thick skin

Sadly we just have to accept its how some people are "

I work with some people who are disgustingly racist. Due to nobody speaking up.. I think everyone is in it

Together.

I suggest you confront that lady and get her out... That's a good deed

Not really. Not now we have airplanes, boats and trains. Living amongst people who speak your language and have your culture is a comfort zone thing not because people hate other races.

Unfortunately a couple of the Older generation are somewhat xenophobic. Not "actively" racist the in that they don't necessarily hate individuals for their nationality But xenophobic in that they do make remarks about nationalities as a whole.

It does make me cringe but There isn't much I can say to them as I think it's a generational thing, a knee her reaction to the multicultural and racial changes in society over a number of years.

Luckily I think the younger generation are a lot more tolerant in general.

I'm a little bewildered by your thought process.

There is an intrinsic difference - you are entitled to an opinion, you aren't entitled to respect because of it.

How you can even think of disputing this is... unsurprising given the state of the UK and the world in general.

Also who're people turning a blind eye because it doesn't effect them.
