Has anyone ever cut their own hair? What has been your experience?

I've been wanting to cut my hair for a while (its now down to my bum!) but I wanted to wait until after my friend's wedding. The wedding has come and gone and I'm thinking of cutting my hair. I've done touch ups and trimming, but I'm wanting something a bit more drastic lately.

Any tips or opinions would be welcome

I havent had my hair cut by a hair dresser for ten years ,i just snip away at the split ends,they always seem to cut off to much than you ask them to .

My friend cuts hers all the time and it looks great she has even managed to cut it from the middle of her back to a pixie cut. So if your brave enough give it a go and if it goes wrong you can always see a hairdresser afterwards

I do my own fringe - after a fashion but am too scared to tackle the length. There was this DIY haircut thing going round a few years back that lots of women raved about where you scrape all your hair into a ponytail and cut the length from there ... the finished (layered) effect depending on where the 'tail' was sited, from memory I think you put it right on top of your head. I'm sure Google and YouTube must have loads of ideas ha ha but not sure I'd be willing to try for real.

I actually did this, but I chickened out and only cut about 2 inches. I'm thinking more like 6 or more this time, and I was wondering of anyone whose done it has tips. Alrhough it sounds like maybe I should just pay someone

I cut my own all of the time,... Thing to do is choose a style you like and that suits you...

I've one of six styles I stick to...

Blade 1 - 6..

I'm sure some place looks for human hair for wigs if your chopping of a fair bit maybe donate it to them if they'll cut it . Get a sponsered cut raise money as well you don't have to shave head completely .

Sometimes I used to put my hair in a ponytail, twist it around a lot, then cut the end off for layers, if you chop into the ends it looks more natural, the higher the ponytail on your head the shorter/more pronounced the layers - other times i'd section the hair up so I knew i was doing it evenly, then hold the sections out at right angles or more and cut, same as hairdressers do, again, the higher you hold, the shorter the layers.

I cut my hair a few months ago and I feel much better than when I didn't I'm cutting my hair again ain't stopped me getting guy's and couples though I'm so busy with meetings

Right OP this is how to choose the perfect hairstyle....

Firstly, what is your face shape?

This is the biggest factor, as face shape determines the style and length.

Secondly, hair texture and thickness.

Thirdly, body shape

Fourth, career

Fifth, dress style.

I'm all for self-cutting (as in hair.) however, you must stay away from the more sleek looks ie.. Bobs. As these need to be more precise.

For the self-cutters I would recommend the layered or choppy look as these can be less structured. However, you will still need to check for symmetry and balance.

PM me with the answers to the 5 questions. Include a recent face and body pc and I will recommend your perfect style and tell you if it's possible to achieve yourself or a salon visit is needed. I will also give you a step by step tutorial.

You've got fantastic hair and I can't see how you could cut it yourself. I'd personally seek professional assistance else it may end up looking a right dogs dinner. There's a guy at work who cuts his own hair...it looks like Edward Scissorhands has been at it!

it's not hard to do, i cut and dye my own so i always get the style i want.

watch some youtube videos for tips, i used to watch the hairdresser so learnt that way.

There's a man on a scooter here in China that got a megaphone who everyday is asking for hair, apparently, he puts it in a ponytail and cuts it all off... Suppose if your short of money and get paid for your hair it's a win win..

I am often tempted, what with all the tutorials you see on youtube but i'm not that brave tbh....although I did see a thing in a magazine once about how to cut your fringe ...and that worked out ok

Try the local hairdressing college - we have Francescos. You can book in with different year levels yr 3 being most qualified. Cheap & if the cock it up they fix it too. My dad & Stepmum have been doing this for years now. Stepmum goes once a week for a free wash & blow-dry too

I wouldn't suggest cutting it yourself, but if it's long and it's just a trim, get a friend to do it. If it's thick, clip 2/3 up and then cut the remaining section. Make the first cut in the middle as a guide, don't cut from one side to the other, it'll be uneven. Then do the hair that's tied up in a couple of sections.

Also, while having in done put your head forward and keep it there while your friend works. Good luck. Xx

I do the same. I've got very curly hair and I've only ever found one hairdresser who could do a good cut on it. Most just don't layer in enough, then they mousse it and use a diffuser (every fucking time - why?). I come out looking like Dolly Parton.

Unfortunately, the guy who knew how to do it was my ex's brother.

yes. i rarely get the hairdresser to do it

when i want a change ( which i dont so no requests)..i have taken some clippers and been a grade 4

but i then send off my hair to cancer wig makers, because its good quality and i feel its being recycled for a good cause x

razor cutting..not many do it..but its the best for wavy/ curly hair in my opinion x

Yeah I'm pretty good at hair generally. I also cut Marc's hair (razor and scissors, both). But I care less about his hair than my own

It's fun to do and you can enjoy it if you're prepared to get other help afterwards, if you don't quite achieve the full look you were aiming for. Or explore with a friend who can manoeuvre mirrors etc. And pass tissues.

If you really, really, really want to do it yourself look on YouTube for tips but take it from an old lady who has had her share of "friends with razor blades inside combs" haircuts...go to a professional, ask for a consultation , tell them what you want, tell them they must do exactly as you ask, listen to any suggestions they might have and if you're confident that they will follow your instructions make an appointment. I've been with my hairdresser long enough to go to dinner at his house but I still keep him on his toes

Got chewing gum in it when I was about 9....cut it out and it looked lopped sided so cut the rest of it to even it up....ended up taking bout 4 inches off it x

Yep... Razor or a technique called splicing. Always ending in a little freehand for that finishing touch.

I went to the hairdressers in June for first time in 18 years. The dye job was well better than anything I could have done, and tbh the cut WAS better....but I didn't enjoy the experience and am not sure if I could go back.

amateur tip - for fringes use cold GHDs for a straight line then cut into it
