"What amazes me about the traveler and squatting laws in this country is the fact that there is such a long time period until they can legally be removed Why do people not have the right just to remove them from land and property immediately?? Amazes me xx " Because they have squatters rights thats why

"If I did it I'd be removed right away. Shouldn't be any different for them. They choose to travel. All they have to do is keep on travelling. Maybe - if they think the councils are responsible for providing parking then the council should licence travelling and keep the numbers down. " Or have an annual cull. Any unmarried rovers over the age of, say, 7, should be culled.

"Do you think Basildon Council should be spending upto £8 million to evict 86 famillies of travellers at Dale Farm in Crays Hill who have set up pitches there without planning permission on green belt land?. It appears Basildon council are going through with it because they would find it hard to justify turning down non travellers building on green belt land in the future if they ignored it. " We used to live near Basildon about 5 years ago and I worked opposite there at the local Homebase they used to be on the rob there almost dailey was a nightmare Basildon council where on about evicting them all back then too

"Berkshire seems to have things under control, traveller/gypsy wise, they are evicted and moved on within seven days. The last I heard about these illegal invasions they were gone with a police escort within the seven days, mind if you had seen the mess left behind you would have sworn that they had been there for months. So it must be possible elsewhere in the country ?" lol you obviously havent seen the size of Dale Farm its going to be a massive job to evict them plus as I remember a lot of them are pretty aggresive you wouldnt want to rub them up the wrong way

"Long story short... I worked in security, one day travellers got onto a site we were responsible for, becausde we had to leave a gate open for construction traffic in and out. When I got there (I was a manager by now), they had made themselves comfortable. I decided to close and lock the gate to the site,(with the backing of the site manager and several "large" labourers lol) which they didnt like, so THEY called the police, claiming they had "rights" to access and egress. When the police turned up I asked about these "rights" which I was informed were to allow them to go shopping for food etc. So I said, no problem, they can drive up to the gate, get out, climb over the gate, and get in a vehicle that we had stopped on the outside, simples. Lets just say they wernt happy, and the head honcho decided on a "chat", during which the words "shotgun" and "your kneecaps" were mentioned. I just looked him in the eyes and told him that accidents can happen, especially at night with large diggers and dumper trucks driving around, it could be noisy and dusty too, so it would be best if they moved on. After two nights where (with the help of the site manager) we had trucks, diggers, and other assorted vehicles diverted so that they were constantly driving (with windows open and sterios blaring) around their caravans, they seemed to go off the idea of staying put, and they left. Moral of the story.... play them by their rules!!!" yes this seems to work with most stuff.

"Dale Farm has been there for years, the land is owned by the gypsys according to Wiki, and there has been a long running coourt case to get rid of them, so that probably explains the 8 mil. The soner the better really for all the legit residents there. As people have said, best to get in quick to rid your land of them. I used to work with a guy whose dad's farm had a load of gypsys turn up on night. He rode down to the field on horseback like Clint freakin Eastwood & told them to get lost. They did the usual threats, at which point he just stroked the shotgun he carried, and smiled.(knowing the guy I can well believe it) The next day someone had diverted a stream into this water meadow, leaving the gypsys knee deep in water..they soon buggered off "

"up until 30 years ago the tinkers (as opposed to 'proper' Romany Gypsies) used to take over a local football field on a regular basis. They would stay a few eeks until they had stolen everything they could get their hands on then move on. One year they made the mistake of burgling the grand mother of the local head 'yooff'. It was a BAD mistake. Their camp was surrounded by stone throwing teenagers (plus a few older) and EVERY pane of glass in caravans and cars were broken. The police pleaded that they didnt have the manpower to disperse such a large group of youngsters. After 24 hours the tinkers moved on and have not returned since. They do seem to have good memories " I have a friend who is a Romany, he told me that Romanies call them "hedgemumpers"

"I wonder how any potential traveller swingers will feel about this thread. Unless anyone above has had their land illegally occupied by travellers I am not sure there is any basis of all the negative remarks? " Yes, yes, they are only poor misunderstood folk, simply trying to live their harmless traditional itinerant lifestyles in the face of discrimination from evil bigots. Do me a favour! There's a perfectly good reason why people have negative views of them, and indeed, why they themselves know and expect hostility from muggins the taxpayer who has to pay for cleaning up their shit when they move on to stick two fingers up at the law in another part of the country. I disagree strongly with certain laws, but I obey them, because that's the price of living in this wonderful country - for them it means "do-as-you-likey" and whinge that they are being picked on when they get pulled up about it. First things first, Plod needs to descend on their site, with HMRC and see who's driving a nice shiny new car, and find out how it's been funded. Anyone who can't produce accurate tax records or show how they have funded their purchase forfeits the motor and gets their own little pitch in Winson Green. That's what would happen if I kept getting new motors with no visible means of income. If I have to obey Anti Money Laundering laws, so can they. Of course, if they can prove that their lifestyle isn't financed by criminal enterprise, no problem, sorry to inconvenience you sir. If you or I bought a brand new car, we'd be able to account for every penny, and have all the paperwork safe and sound, right? I'd be the first to apologise for maligning them if they had transparent financial records and could show that their lifestyle was funded through good old-fashioned hard work. A taxi driver in Dublin once cursed a Transit pickup in front and told me that it was unusual to see one there at that time of year. When I asked why, he said that they were usually all in England on their Summer Campaign, but they had massive luxury family homes to return to when they needed to retreat somewhere quiet! Of course, I have no way of knowing if that's true, all I know is that when pikeys with Irish accents roll up onto land near here, every car that hasn't moved for a week is automatically assumed to be "abandoned", will disappear, along with the wiring in empty warehouses etc, and when they finally get moved on (even getting a diesel allowance payout from the council!) it costs thousands to clear up and disinfect the land they've stopped on. Yes, once or twice, I have seen very small family groups, one or two caravans, who bag their rubbish up, don't just shit everywhere, and move on quietly without fuss, but the vast majority just cause trouble, steal anything they can and enjoy being obnoxious and anti-social, they take pride in it as if it's an essential part of being a gypsy. Well, that's fine, because part of MY traditional cultural heritage is burning gypsies out of town, and I feel hard done by that I'm being prevented from carrying on what my people have done throughout the ages. Waaaah, racists!
