Serious question for cyclists

How far a day do you cycle? For good abdominal fat burning and muscle building.

I can't do normal weight loss exercises due to mid abdominal hernia, where the muscle wall in centre of abdominal wall has split .

Doctor suggests cycle riding exercise to help join these muscles together

Phew! I thought you were going to say "you do realise that the Highway Code and relevant traffic law applies to you as well, right!?"

Now that always does open up a can of worms and is most definitely the sort of thing I'd never say out loud in public on an open forum

good luck with the rehabilitation - I'm no doctor or fitness consultant but I guess take it sensibly and done overdo it. Some people here might do 100km a day others 2km so only you know your limits

Best of luck fella

Except most exercise bikes have the most god-awful saddles, almost like a settee. Child-sized cranks.

Plus a terrible position for anyone

There's one in our cellar, l can't use it, as the position is 101% at odds with mine

Unless you buy a 'Watt-Bike' of similar, but those are serious bits of kit (with a matching price tag)

I understand where you're coming from but just do what you can and it's all good. It's certainly better than the option most people take.. Sitting at home on the sofa.

I got back on the bike five years ago and it's been a big part of my weight loss plus I actually love cycling.

I'm pretty seriously into my riding these days but I'll also ride with friends just for fun and even from coffee shop to coffee shop on days off.

So if you get or have a "bike" bike and fancy a little ride out then just let me know.

Good luck.

Distance is not the be all and end all for weight loss, you need some hills to help burn the fat.

I have a few circuits that I used to do, between 20 to 30 miles, but all had at least one hill that I will get off to get up it. After a while you will conquer the hill.

There is no muscle to split per se but the gap between the two can be weak and wide. A physio referral is what you need.

As an aside, exercise only contributes to about 20% of weight loss, the rest is diet.

The hills are definitely the best for improving your fitness and it's amazing how quickly you can overcome a previously challenging one.

Cycling has definitely helped tone my stomach muscles up a little but i think maybe it's as good as its gonna get now and it's more just the skin that's a little loose.

Cycle for enjoyment as often as you can and you won't go wrong.

First of all, well done OP in actually getting off the sofa - that's the hardest part.

I personally find that I don't burn calories at any decent rate unless my HR is above 150bpm, but everyone is different so I would speak to a professional.

I have a turbo trainer in the garage & I find it awful - even at minus 3 Celsius I'm dripping with sweat!

Actually getting out on a bike is far better, its far more interesting & you can't simply get off & sit on the sofa when you've had enough.

But in answer to your question, I'm currently cycling around 100 miles a week, including my 20 mile per week commute.

And further to all this I'm convinced it's been brilliant for my mental wellbeing.

I feel really chilled out and calm after a good ride plus I always find I get the chance to leave everything behind for that couple of hours or whatever when I hit the road.

My mate cycles 2 hours per work day, about 32 miles, then normally at least one ride of 60 mile at the weekend for 20 years. He still has a gut.

Most likely because of his diet..

I go out riding a lot with a guy who eats way more during the ride than he could ever burn off.
