I really don't see the issue with the word 'Paki'. It simply implies that someone is from Pakistan.

Also would like to add that I'm British with an Indian background, and just because you're brown, it doesn't mean you come from Pakistan.

End of rant.

Americans, Yanks. French, Froggies. Italians, Spix. Germans, Krouts. Polish, Poles and would you believe it Pakistani people Paki's. Non of these terms are meant to sound derogatory or racist, it's just the same as others calling me me Taff or Wooly Back! But I never use the 'N' word, that's just not nice.

I had it today on the street too. I haven't had that P word thrown at me on the street for many, many years. The vehemence of being told that me and all the the Pakis will be sent home now was a little shocking.

I'm sorry to hear that you experienced this but really glad it wasn't on here.

See now maybe I am wrong but I have never seen the work paki as rasist it's always been a just a description of a person just like saying the black guy over there.

To me it's the intent not the word that matters the problem is yes some people use it as a rasist term but then you get biggots everywhere, shame really

I have never had it used as a descriptor (which would be inaccurate in my case anyway). It has only ever been used in my hearing as an attack.

You are wrong. We are both old enough to remember skinheads shouting Paki out and such like. Little kids intimidated because of the colour of their skins and casual racism that was part of life back in the seventies and eighties.

Times have changed, language has changed and to keep using language that someone else finds offensive can't be acceptable.

I think much like nigger and wog it is hard to argue that Pakistan isn't generally used as a racist insult. Not least as many of the people called it will be from places other than Pakistan.

And there is also the matter of context. I suspect you don't call random people in the street raff or paddy do you?

The great thing about the internet, books and films is that you can see from others peoples perspective that such words are clearly used negatively. So no, don't accept you can only go on your own experiences and thoughts - their is a world of evidence to show you how wrong this is...

I haven't the time for such a silly post and trying to get your head around racism in all its forms.

Plus you're of Indian descent. Which maybe negates any threat/pressure when people incorrectly label you 'paki' or if you hear it casually used (by presumably non Pakistani people?)in the street.

Good for you.

Not for many others though.

ANd yes, I'm aware people of Pakistani origin/heritage actively use it amongst themselves. Which is blatantly different.
