So I want to get myself a new car but not sure what to get, any suggestions for me? I want something powerful but still quite small.

Doesn't matter about price range either.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Thanking you

Mondeo is a nice car - I have a 62 Mondeo Estate 2.0 diesel and it's a dream - plenty space, fantastic spec and quite cheap to run 45mpg + and only £160 to tax. At one time I wouldn't have looked the side of the road that a Ford was on, but the new ones ..... they are brilliant.

The quick ones aren't exactly family cars.

Focus RS or ST are the best of the hot hatches

Avoid Japanese cars, they are quick but they fold like paper in accidents, French cars tend to rust.

You must have a budget in mind, how much do you want to spend. There are nice small cars for between 3 grand and 100 grand, which end of the scale would you like.

Audi S3

A stealth car that goes like a bomb when you put your foot down and it feels really solid with the 4x4

Guys, sorry certain types of guys, will see the s3 badge and want to race you but only a few cars can live with it.

The rs3 isn't worth the extra

Comparing it to a Porsche turbo s there isn't any performance difference until about 80 mph

Really depends on what you want. Audi tt is perfect if it's just for you day to day but for a bit more cash you can get a Porsche cayman which is so much better

A class merc is a bit shite imo. For that size of car get the s3 Audi or M2 bmw

Bigger then bmw 4 series or Mercedes cla

I'm waiting to decide on my next one, got one more to test then will take it for a spin down the formby bypass

If you're going to look at the Audi S3 then you may as well look at the Golf R, same car but cheaper with great finance deals too (2k deposit contribution!) I (Mr) work at a VW garage and review wise it has been a fantastic car. Having driven one myself, I can confirm as someone said earlier on the S3 that the 4x4 as pet gives it awesome stability.

Not their opinions but the information being given!

No two people will feel the same about something but certain facts are a given such as power, torque, 4x4, etc.

Add that to the fact most are talking about something they've paid out for from their own pocket and of course it's the best thing since sliced bread. (What was the best thing before sliced bread?)

Research it online elsewhere and you'll get hard facts from people who drive them for a living without bias.

Maybe some mad lease option. I looked at one a fee months ago, on the day the new one was released actually. They were wanting double that a month.

Settled on a mitsubishi outlander instead.

"Jesus there's some shite being spouted in here

No one is asking you to read it

You've asked for opinions yet are getting all sorts of regurgitated rubbish.

Google, YouTube, etc will get you real world tests by independent reviewers.

S3 - always rated highly.

Golf R - same chassis - better overall package.

A class - don't basically. Competent but wooden.

M135i eats the lot but don't expect to get over 30mpg

M235i even better balanced but you lose the hatchback although the boot is bigger than an A5

4c is incredible but don't expect to get the Asda shop in it

Then you're down into the shopping trolleys.

I don't mean this in any way offensive, but you said people are basically talking rubbish with their opinions on here, yet you've just passed several opinions??? I'm confused "

Actually audis3 has better package, chicer interior and better residuals and a better badge

I (Mr) work at a VW garage and review wise it has been a fantastic car. Having driven one myself, I can confirm as someone said earlier on the S3 that the 4x4 as pet gives it awesome stability."

Didn't read it properly the first time around, missed the doesn't matter about price part.

If you're going to leave it standard then the AMG A45 is pretty much as quick as you're going to get from a hatchback,

If you're wanting to tune it up, a Subaru wrx would be a great shout. 0.8 seconds slower than the merc but doing that with 80bhp less, spend £3 - £5k tuning a Subaru and you've got a very very fast car.

Depending on how much staying with a small car goes, just get an R35 GTR if cost isn't an issue

I bought an astra gtc 1.6 turbo. Small but big inside with a bigger boot than all the others in its class. Mine has sat nav and all the usual extras leather seats parking assist etc etc. At 200 bhp it'll keep up with most things much more powerful and and even a bmw 320 m sport can't touch it for acceleration or top end. Also has the vxr body kit on too which looks fantastic especially as it's in yellow with great looking 19" wheels. If you can't tell I absolutely love my car

Mercedes C class sport

I just bought one and very impressed, has various modes of driving whether you select - economy; comfort; sport or sport+

it is also self parking which I thought was a gimmick until I tested it, you drive slowly past the space you want to park in, select self park and it has already calculated whether it will fit in the space or not, it self steers and fits the space, bloody impressive.

It has all the speed you need and that's from me, a F4 MV Agusta rider, and economy is around 60 - 70mpg

0-60 in 5.8 seconds cannot ever be considered slow by any stretch of the imagination. I would even go so far as to say that cars as powerful as that are completely unnecessary as road going vehicles.

In my opinion, cars should be limited to 45bhp, a 65mph top speed, and a 0-60 time no quicker than 20 seconds...

Sounds very much like the 1.0 corsa eco flex I had the severe misfortune of having to suffer as a courtesy car once

I think anything under 7.5 seconds can be considered fast, since that where hot hatches usually start and have got progressively faster over the years.

Below 5 seconds....you won't see many cars on the road capable of that.

Under 3.5 seconds and your into super car territory, the R35 GTR is quite common to see though since they are very cheap considering the performance when compared to a 911 turbo s or a lambo.

I don't get the purpose of this thread I'm afraid. Asking for advice about which car to buy, but being non-specific about price range. How can you draw a true comparison between a £20k car and a £80k car? OP claims to be sensible with money but hasn't even looked at insurance costs? If OP is sensible with money, buy a car that's a year old and save yourself the first 12 months depreciation.

I met a girl from Southport and had great sex. She was into cars and went off with a man in a car.

"I have a Golf R and in my opinion it is a better drive than the S3. I had an S3 on a 53 plate but my new well 65 plate R is so much better. But it does depend how you like to drive! "

Can't really compare a 53 plate old s3 to a new golf r

I test drove both new golf r and s3. S3 is much better hence got it

"I don't get the purpose of this thread I'm afraid. "

Really?

I would suggest that the question is quite obvious, if money is not an issue then the issues have to be class, style, and performance. Most here have chosen one of these over the others, while one or two have suggested that there may be a way to have it all without looking like a total showoff and twat.

A 1 year old car can and does actually work out more expensive than a new car (depending on how it is funded), depending on brand too. People's attitude to car purchases in a lot of cases is very outdated. Yes if you pay cash (true cash) then the used car is obviously cheaper but because of the rates and deposit contributions if looking monthly new is definitely the cheaper way to go. Beside does a 1 year old car not depreciate? You will lose atleast £2k just by driving it off the fore court.

PS this is not an argumentative post but need to highlight this as I find it frustrating when you actually SHOW somebody it is cheaper and they ask what the catch is?!?

Well spent a good few hours at Audi today with the intentions of driving the S Line but they convinced me to take the R8 out for a spin...and now I'm in love
