Essential Criteria in Job Application

I have had my eye on jobs from an organisation.. waiting to see what crops up.

Just seen a job I'd love to do.. BUT in the essential critera in the person spec. there's one obstacle regarding previous experience.

If I apply with such an obvious obsticle, could that put me on the numpty list for future jobs that I can apply for?

Depends on the job type and if you wish to apply to the same company again.

In a word, yes. Could you spin some story about having relevant (ish) experience or would you get found out?

Hard to say.

What is the line of work and what work/volunteering have you done previously - any hobbies or groups outside of work you help with you could put some spin on for the experience?

I doubt they would put you on a list. Honestly I recommend calling and explaining after thinking it through. I've sad on a few interviewing boards now for the uni I work at and sometimes if someone has called or spoken with us previously and has a good record ect we take them because they obviously want to work hard. If they don't we can give them the sack.

Worth a try is all I'm saying, but play it strategically.

The thing about experience is that it's transferable, I have applied to one job say as a salesman where working with the public is obviously an expectation. On the strength of working in a call centre, having said that the fact that I can make this as a reasonable connection at the interview gives them some insite to my abilities with working with people.

Life is made up of experiences it's how you apply them to the here and now for your own benefit that counts.

Exactly, you have to look at the deeper meaning of the requirement...

Although once I worked in an office where a guy was hired as a software developer with Java experience. One day 2 he was sat there reading off the page from "java for dummies" on his desk - he didn't last long

Trowbridge

I(A) am currently looking for a job and clearly it is not easy.

Just because you don't satisfy all of the Job Description requirements doesn't mean that you shouldn't apply; you could rewrite your CV to highlight any transferable skills or experience which may mitigate the lack of specific experience.

IME some Job Specs are fleshed out by either the recruiters or the Company HR Dept. The hiring manager may well be happy with your experience or transferable skill set.

I would advise take a punt, but try to speak to the Recruiter or Company before submitting your application and mention the call on your covering letter - apologies if this is old rope for you.

Haywards heath/Waterlooville

I find most job specs are BS and written by deluded people.

It is definitely worth getting in touch and getting them to elaborate on that requirement and build a rapport/dialogue going.
