The BBC resident rocket scientist who has been looking a voting patterns for years reckons the vote was surprisingly close and no good for Remain. But BBC also reporting big likely wins in other areas for Remain. Could be a long night.

It's a straight majority. The problem is that we don't know what the magic number is as until each area declares we don't know what the voter count is in each area.

That's the point I am making. We don't know what X is until all the returns are in. It's an absolute count. So, the current returns show 161,744 for leave and 158,537 for remain with 5 out of 382 areas returned.

That's a great turnout considering what we've seen so far but the Scottish referendum had a 84.6% turnout. I was hoping for something similar.

Just think it would be quite cool to say you were part of the very small number who could be arsed to vote but couldn't decide between the 2 options. I don't think this juggernaut would have been stopped by David being elected. There would still have been a large protest vote and the press for the referendum would have continued. It may not have been now but it would have come.

We're not yet at 1 million votes known, of a potential 46m.

Smaller areas were always going to vote leave. The low turnout in London may be the deciding factor in this.

Yeah like the sodding EU flooding relief fund which the North of the UK would have benefited from earlier this year - bet it would have changed a few perceptions too. Same with the South now.

Funny isn't it, get involved wholeheartedly and you reap greater benefits - don't get involved an elect anti-EU MEPs to represent you, who have poor attendance, and you are likely to get the short end of the stick.

Of the 46m eligible voters London has just over 5m and the South East over 6m. Depending on how the home counties vote these could cancel out the largely remain votes expected for London. However, the floods in London may have affected the turnout (reports that some areas are below 60%).
