Just to add a different twist. My mum will be 70 this year and she has been old since she was able to draw her pension 10 years ago! She gave up work, gave up on life and is now a grumpy oap.

She doesn't go out for days on end although her husband drives and they are capable of getting out. We live in a beautiful area with lots to see and do. But no, she sits at home on her fat backside doing bugger all. She moans about her health all the time.

So, she is an inspiration to me......she inspires me to never be like her!!!!

What a shame ,that's growing old before you need to be

It's ok if you're in relatively good shape, but a lot of older folk take medication for aliments that have side effects that make them feel like shit. They then get depressed and don't want to go out.

A lot of older people are also socially isolated, barely see family, their friends/partners have died and they are treated as a burden and inconvenience.

I see it day in day out in my job

London and France

I know several people who turned 50 and became old because they thought they were supposed to.

On the other hand I have several freinds in their late 70s who look in their 50s and behave like they are 30.

There was a guy on local TV recently who turned 103 and is very active . They asked him what his secret was ;

" well I did give up smoking"

" ah " they said, with delight,

" it's all about a healthy life,how long ago did you give it up?"

" Six months ago"

My dear old dad is 90. Still living at home, very independent, and despite walking with a stick and a dodgy heart, still does his chores and gardening. Unless he is ill he always has a cheeky smile and a joke to tell. I hope I have his strength of character when/if I get to his age, bless him
