Talkative people in the office

For a while now I have worked in a shared office. It was fine because the guys I work with are generally quiet because of the nature of their work (research, etc). We would have the odd political discussion, but that's it.

Yesterday a woman got moved into the spare desk here and she spends her day on the phone talking non stop and then talks to herself out loud when she gets emails and such. She is generally a very very talkative person in an environment where silence is valued.

I think I might go crazy. I have a month left at this job and I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with this. Maybe headphones and my iPod are the way to go.

Anyone else have someone in their office that is too talkative? Or are YOU that person?!

I'm talkative but not in the mornings.....I have to warm up to my talkativeness!

Nobody likes change, nobody likes new people and especially not talkative new people.

I would consider the headphones but failing that try a sign that says shut the fuck up-nobody's interested in your life

She seems very nice, she's just loud and I can't read with the constant chatter. Her niceness makes it harder to put up the recommended sign.

I made it clear to the people I work with that they are not to talk to me with innane chatter.

They know not to talk to me at all before I've had a cup of tea.

My office is like a morgue. Fortunately I only go there once a month or so, and then head to the pub.

Yes, I know what you mean. I work in an office and have to work with people like this. I'm the kind of person who only ever really speaks when I have something I think needs to be said. I can quite happily sit quietly for hours on end and never say a word. I like peace and quiet.

Some people think speaking's like breathing. While ever they're speaking they know they're still alive. Especially annoying if you're just trying to get on with something. I've mastered the art of zoning out.

This would drive me crazy. Open plan offices are the work of the devil.

At this time in the morning!!!, there'll be a man with a dog and tattoos, a thin woman about 50, an old guy with crazy hair and a Glaswegian.

Head wrecking indeed. Do you ever get that glazed-over look when they're talking to you? All the while inside you're screaming to yourself "leave me alone! I REALLY don't care about this shit of which you speak! I don't want to be here. Fate has brought us together, that is all. I'm only here to earn a few pennies, otherwise this would be the last place on earth I would choose to be. Now please shut the fuck up!!". I'm assuming it's not just me who has these thoughts.

I am having those thoughts. But she isn't even talking to me. She is talking to herself! I'm seriously considering taking my computer and going outside to do work.

My office is rarely quiet - it's open plan & phones constantly ringing. Right now is pleasant. When the England/Wales game was on last week it was virtually silent. As soon as the match finished the phones started.

I used to be in a 4 person office & it was bliss as 2 were always at Court so just me & a great colleague

I am that talkative person.

I tend to talk through my work to myself, this is how I find order though I'm not loud. I work with two other people and we don't have much space really. We also have constant interruptions from other staff.

I have the ability to zone out other background noise so I completely focus on what I'm doing. I tend to talk through my prioritising ie 'right we'll do this first, and move on to that in an hour'.

We all have different ways of working and functioning and this new lady is not doing anything wrong, it is simply her way. She has been moved into an office where others have a different way. She probably feels as uncomfortable. It would be wrong to be rude and nasty as suggested by others. It probably wasn't her decision to move into that space.

We have to learn to embrace colleagues differences and come up with our own solutions on how we can work, headphones could be a good way.

Yeah, I know what you mean and you're right. I don't think the suggestions of a sign or being nasty were actually serious. Though I will say that she could be considerate as well and take account of her new surroundings. Everyone should compromise.

It is unfortunate when management decide to place people who work differently together, I am fortunate we are all similar in my office. One of us does use headphones when completing a difficult piece of work, we are not offended by that because we all get on well.

I know people weren't serious about swearing at this lady on this thread, but the overall feeling of non acceptance was apparent of those who work differently.

It is up to the regular office workers to make a newcomer feel welcomed. When this has been established then any talks about how you all can work harmoniously in that office can be had and compromises reached. equally she may not like complete silence as the others find talking to oneself annoying.

We spend so much time at work, it's nice to feel comfortable there. I would hate a silent office, that would be deathly dull for me. I am lucky I work in an organisation which is very public faced so interacting with people is our business

The annoying laugh is my pet hate. In my office I have both Muttley and Basil Brush. I can at least escape to my laboratory. Open plan offices are not good for many people, and the UK has more than most countries.
