ENERGY minister Charles Hendry has given his backing to controversial shale gas production on the coast near Blackpool.

The MP visited one of Cuadrilla Resources’ gas drilling sites in South Fylde before meeting with energy firm bosses... Cuadrilla has drilled extensively at Preese Hall in Weeton, and another site in Westby has yet to be drilled.

Four further sites, including land off Kirkham bypass, and Singleton, have also been identified as shale rock areas and will be looked at in the near future.

Mr Hendry added: “It is a very well-established process used around the world."

“If anyone has concerns about the practice they can be reassured it is safe.”

My prediction for future energy...

Thorium reactors and shale gas will provide far more energy than wind/solar/hydro ever will.

Shale decouples the price of natural gas from crude oil and reduced our dependence on oil producing countries.

Some Environmental Impacts

Water

* The amount needed for fracking (5 million gallons/frac)

* Loss of well (aquifer) water through disruption or contamination

* Gas migration causing methane contaminated water

* The fate of the produced water (“treated” at POTWs)

* Degradation of water quality in local streams and rivers

* Degradation of drinking water quality (need to purchase bottled water)**

Land usage

* Large amount of acreage needed for well pads and impoundments

* As long as a well can be “restimulated”, the well pad will remain active

* Leased areas (former private and public lands) become restricted access

* Public lands and parks no longer “public” as they are off limits due to safety

Exposure to toxic chemicals (spills, aquifer contamination)

* Fracking fluids

* Produced water contaminated with organics, salts, heavy metals, and NORMs

* Failed or improper casings lead to aquifer contamination

I thiunk this was what they were on about a few weeks ago on an american news channel.

The water gets so contaminated with methane that it ACTUALLY BURNS if you turn on a tap and put a flame to it!!!!

I was sceptical, but then they went to three different ppls houses and tested it by the simple method of turning on a tap and lighting a lighter...... woof.... all three water streams caught fire!!!!!

I am all for exploring new alternative forms of energy, but this is not the way to do it!!!

EMS and emergency procedures

Evacuation plans must be in place for populated areas (a single well blow out can affect more than 1 mile radius)

* EMS, police and fire must be trained to handle emergencies (well and impoundment fires, evacuations)

Costs: Increases taxes to cover infrastructure damage, additional public services and security.

Unfortunatley Shale Gas extraction is very much part of the future, particularly if consumers like lower gas prices.

It's gaining momentum all over the planet, the Americans are into it bigtime.
