After the tragic murder of jo cox and the possibility she was defending herself or other members of the public and not an intentional target how do you feel about the police commisioners statement recently

The public should “get stuck in” and help victims of violence and extremist fanatics, the country’s most senior police officer said as he called for more have-a-go heroes.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said anyone who witnesses an assault or crime should “never turn their back” and “give it their best shot” to help the victim

I have stepped in and would again. I can't walk by and watch someone being attacked.

Jo Cox being killed is an extreme case but everything that has been said about her suggests she would step in and do what she could to help someone in trouble.

Of course it is not physically possible for many people, but the principle is right.

There is too much of the " it's nothing to do with me" attitude nowadays.

She was a brave and principled woman, whatever your politics are.

Brave morally, and it seems, now, brave physically too.

in truth while I would like to say I'd always intervene in reality I would take each situation as it comes and on its own merits. Whilst of course I'd like to be a hero and save a situation I also have a responsibilities with my family and loved ones who will always be my first priority and getting myself killed wouldn't be helping them (eg if a gunman was on the loose shooting indiscriminately)

So in some situations I would, in others I might not based on risk ... most unchivalrous I know

Whilst " having a go" is very laudable, and should be encouraged, assisting in a situation does not always have to mean being physically involved; and is not always possible.

It's the " pretend it's not happening" attitude which is abhorrent .
