To be fair, he had to do something. As a striker sometimes you can play all day and not score no matter how good you are. It's just a good job that he made the changes at half time rather than waiting til the last 20 or so mins

I would agree were it not for the fact that he started with Sterling ....

I just don't understand why we didn't start the first game with Vardy ....

Anyway , alls well that ends well .

Taking the 2 players off, and replacing them the 2 players every football fan wanted onn doesn't make him a genius........I said at half time get Kane and Sterling off and Sturridge and Vardy on......I should be england manager!!!

I would say playing a winger (Sterling) as a striker was probably the exact opposite of genius.

To be fair he saw his folly and changed it.

Small margins, that goal in the last couple of minutes could be the difference between Roy having a £4m a year job or being unemployed.

For us to have 4 points after two games is probably at worst a fair reflection of our performances against the sides we've played. Should win the group from here which means we meet a team in second round that came 3rd in their group so should be into the quarter finals now for sure. Doubt we will make the semis though

Along with everyone in the world except for Roy Hodgson it seems.

Man finally does the obvious and is proclaimed genius!

Woy is a lucky man to be "coaching.." this level of squad players which he has at his disposal imo..how can Rashford, Alli,Sterling,Dier etc be inspired by a 70 year old guy on the touch line? , his level if coaching is Fulham etc, not the national team

He seems to have the squad unified, playing well and showing a lot of spirit, easy to criticise when things go badly but for now let's get behind him

Because, Hodgdon is stupidly loyal and seems to overlook whether a player is in form, or not.

On this basis alone, Townsend should be in the squad instead of him.

Hodgson's a numpty and hasn't got a clue.

He got lucky today.

I agree re Townsend, I appreciate loyalty but still I don't understand why we don't pick in form players rather than relying on old faithfuls.

Shows the naivety of the guy, instead of being proactive and unleashing Vardy and Sturridge on Wales from the start. He goes with type. When we come up against the bigger teams, no disrespect to the Welsh, he is going to come undone, lets face it neither Wales or Russia were an attacking threat.

And to think he's payed millions to make these decisions.

He absolutely should be picking players who are on form and full of confidence, i.e. Vardy, Drinkwater, Townsend... and not someone like Sterling who's had a poor season and is low on confidence.

Hodgson's mentality is fundamentally flawed, anyway. He's a pragmatist and worries more about the opposition rather than concentrating on playing to our strengths. He sets the team up not to lose, rather than to try to win the game.

It's proven time and time again that sticking with the same old players doesn't work. Remember the obsession with trying to get Lampard & Gerrard to play together, and constantly playing players out of position to accommodate and shoehorn others in. It never worked.

We never learn.

This. Raheem Sterling is rubbish, should be on the subs bench for the rest of the tournament now. Rashford played better in 20 minutes than Sterling did the whole of the Russia game and the whole first half against Wales.

Sterling has NO END PRODUCT. Never has done and this part of his game hasn't changed or improved since he first came on the scene. Proves he's not putting the hours of practice in, to improve this part of his game.

The hunger just isn't there anymore for these modern day footballers. He's earning over 100K a week, so he's probably not that bothered about improving as a player.

For those that say he should have played X, Y or Z, how do we know how well or fit they are after a long hard season.

What is apparent to me is Roy is a good manager of the resources he has and that no doubt we will get as far as possible under his stewardship.

I personally think he has done a fantastic job. He obviously is a football man through and through.

In that game Wales = Bale + 9 defenders & a goalkeeper.

England had 70% possession and Wales only managed 2 shots on goal.

Interesting to read some of the comments, Roy has picked the youngest squad in the tournament, the side has played pretty well in 2 games, he has made changes at the right time and has appeared to be willing to take risks. Will be interesting to see if he sticks with Hart in goal who has been at fault for both goals conceded, but judging from how the squad seems to be enjoying themselves, with competition for places in all areas and most importantly getting results I would say that so far he is doing ok. Fair to say the opposition hasn't been up to much and there is a long way to go, but so far I have been impressed.

Not wanting to sound down on Roy but Slutsky and Coleman aren't exactly tactical geniuses, if we come up against del Bosque/Conte/Low I think his (not the squads) shortcomings will be shown up

He did beat Germany in the build up to the tournament. I know it was only a friendly but England played very well that day.

In the first game he brings on Milner to try and shut up shop. That cost us the win. He didn't play to our strengths and we paid the price. What he should have done is, bring on an offensive player and aimed to finish them off with a second goal, whilst we were ahead. We're not strong enough defensively to be trying to hold onto a one goal lead.

In the Wales game his hand was forced. He had no choice but to put Sturridge & Vardy on, after going a goal behind. We should be more annoyed that he started the same team again against Wales. He just doesn't learn from his mistakes.

He's had two years to prepare for these games and still doesn't know/put out his best team.

He's reactive, rather than proactive. The man is clueless.

Who was it that scored the winning goal against Germany?

It was Vardy, who he left on the bench against Russia and only brought him on against Wales because we were 1-0 down. Vardy should be in the starting line up. It should be obvious to Roy but it appears it's not.

Fully agree

I still can't understand why he took an extra striker then leaves three on the bench while playing an out of form winger as a striker.

Hodgson seems to prefer square pegs in a round holes, like using your main striker to take corners.

Don't see why everyone's slating him right after we've won a game. This is the best team we've had in years. Great mix of youth and experience. The energy is great for once.

Some things never change I guess.

He wasn't much of a genius in first game was he. Disrupted midfield and decided best way to prevent an equaliser at 1-0 is to defend defend defend.....

The real best way to prevent an equaliser when you are so on top...is to score at least one more....!

Exactly, it's a real concern.

Wales are a very average team, albeit, with great team camaraderie, but, with just one great player. They were there for the taking yesterday.

To not start the game with two strikers up front against them, is pretty much unforgivable.

If it had been England taking the 1-0 lead, instead of Wales... he'd have been bringing on Milner in the 78th minute, as per...

He obviously realised the error of his ways by putting Rooney on corner duties, instead of Kane, so, perhaps all is not lost?

On a separate note, good as Kane is, he's shattered, and needs taking out of the team, at the moment (along with Sterling, who's been really, really poor). Give him a break/rest. If, we progress he can come back in, later in the tournament.

We need to start Vardy & Sturridge up front against Slovakia on Monday.

Absolutely. (applauds)

It's almost as if trying to get a second goal and go 2-0 up, isn't even in Hodgson's thinking
