Is it racist

Here I sit behind my sand bags, with my little tin hat on, holding a pen (its mightier than a sword apparently).

The question is often asked "is it racist" about a number of subjects, well, here is the truth of the matter as I see it

The flag of saint George.

On its own, the flag of st George isn't a racist flag, nether is the union jack, what IS racist, is the rhetoric attached to it by right wing party's since the late 60's.

The national front among others, used and abused the symbolism of the national flag, with its supporters using it to show their affiliation with such groups, I remember even hearing the chant "ain't no black in thee union jack, send the bastards back" the fact that the flags of England and Great Britain, are seen as racist, can't be set down at the door of ethnic minorities, who somehow are accused of being over sensitive, it should be placed firmly at the door of rightwing extremists, who now bitch and moan about the flag being seen as racist.

So the reason people see it as racist, to display england flags, is because racists, have made it that way, the reason people see it as racist to celebrate St George's day, is because racists have made it that way.

Over the last few months, as referendum fever has gripped the nation, and the european cup has started, the flag waving has intensified to fever pitch, and along with said flag waving, has come the preemptive defense of said flag, and its coming in waves of memes on social media, and shared posts of cards dropped through letter boxes (one of which is from a housing association, that wouldn't allow a flag of any nation to fly outside one of their properties, and has little to do with loony left local government).

I've said it before, I'm a proud Englishman, I love my country, and they are my flabgs too, but they are being tarnished by people who say the love their country, buy whaytthey are actually doing is hasting other countries.

Is this what all those brave men and women of our armed forces, who have lost their lives in the name of freedom died for, so some hate filled knuckle dragging moron, can effectively piss on the flag

Its my flag, and I want it back

People are racist flags aren't.

It's is not racist to fly a Union Jack or an England flag, if you wish to put an England flag on your car to support football do so, nobody will be offended.

I know various English supporters of all backgrounds, religions and colour that fly an England flag during tournaments.

There are morons who have flags there are morons that don't the flag isn't the problem.

If I were to fly an English or British flag it would be out of patriotism or support. Do any other nationalities get accused of racism because they fly their flag? On foreign shops in my area they have their flags painted on their shop fronts; I can't recall seeing an English owned shop with the same. It's sad that we feel it's wrong to fly a flag unless it's the Queens birthday or jubilee or a football event is on.

Just because they use our flag doesn't mean it's done in our name does it? Even if you changed the flag, the new flag would just be used. You won't change mob mentality and that's what football hooligans have and the National Front. As a percentage of this country, they are small. And I doubt they read here, so we won't change their views anyway. Our flag isn't racist, people are.

I agree with most of what the OP says with the exception that I have already claimed my flags back (Union Jack and St. George Cross) and fly then with pride when appropriate.

If we want our flags back then just take them back, use them and then, almost by magic, they are no longer emblems of BNP, EDL or so called Britain First.

As Bobby Brown once eloquently shouted "strike back, strike back" every little step you take by flying the cross of st George is another step towards wresting it from the bigots and prejudiced.

There is nothing wrong with being patriotic and proud of this Great Nation. We should celebrate our nationality and verve like every other patriotic citizen of all the other nations.

I love our flags Englands st georges cross and the uk,s union flag (only should ne called jack when flown on a boat at sea) But all flags have negative and positive infurences but how can a rag on a stick be racist

The use of the word racism is so loosely used nowadays I'm not sure some people know what the word means or what racism is.

Whilst real racism is on the rise it gets diluted, ignored. The play the racism card at any opportunity cry wolf brigade are doing so that much that no one looks to pay attention when real racism occurs. Racism aint a one way street either.

Ironically [for the racists] St George had Greek parents [his Dad was from Cappodocia which is/was part of Turkey] and was born in Palestine in Lydda - now known as Lod a mixed Israeli/Arab town near Tel Aviv.

That said, I don't want to go all US of A and have it shoved down my throat as the ultimate symbol of my belief and dedication to my country either.

That's why idiots who use it as racism are just idiots, but then the same could be argued for idiots that see it as racism wherever they see it flying.
