It's Florida.

There are thousands of Alligators there; and a lot of water .

Florida; Water; Alligators. This wasn't a Zoo. It was a Hotel with a lake/ river. In parkland full of rivers .

Anyone with half a brain knows that there will be a danger from Alligators near almost any stretch of water.

You can only take limited measures to control them.

When I lived in St Helens there were, briefly, Aligators in the local canal. Along with loads of tropical fish!

I kid you not...Google it if you don't believe me. The authorities had to get them out!

I think they're pretty much everywhere in Florida. I've seen them in the back waters of a villa we stayed in years ago.

Some get bought as pets & flushed away down the toliet when no longer wanted.

I once watched a game of golf on the TV and the golfer was playing a shot from right close to the water, the commentators were saying he better watch out as there's gators in the water, next thing this gator just popped right out of the water next to the golfer and quick as flash the golfer just whacked it on the head with his 7 iron and it fucked off back in the water, then cool as you like he carried on playing his shot!!.

Needless to say, when they interviewed the golfer afterwards he was Australian .... Oh yeah mate, it was a bit of a scare but it was only a tiddler so I just gave it a quick whack with the club and carried on....

You got love Aussies

Very much a place you would find them.

I have been there. It's a huge park. Massive grounds. Lots of water . Several feeder streams . Other lakes nearby.

Even with the fences, grilles, and deterrents and control measures they use , you can't keep them out. They are very strong, but even the big ones can slip through the tiniest of gaps.

My freinds who live in Florida have them wander into the garden regularly .

In Florida its not uncommon to find one hanging about in your swimming pool. The place is infested with them.

When I was in Mexico you didn't hang about in the evening by the lagoons for this very reason.

Shooting it won't do any good trap it and move it deep into the Everglades.

The Gran Floridian is Disneys flagship hotel, although you can never be 100% in Florida, I would have thought that this hotel would be one of the safer locations in the state. There are no signs warning of gators at that location but there are no bathing signs. (Probably so as not to lower the tone knowing Disney)

Not really sure why I need to have a coffee? It's a valid point. Humans infest animal habitat because they want to live their then get shitty when the animal's want to still live there as well and call them the nuisance. It's like me setting up home in your living room then getting annoyed when you want to come in and use it.

Law of the jungle, survival of the fittest, the Gator was doing what gators do in being predatory and attacking a weaker animal (2year old kid) the hunters will then attack the weaker gator using their superior hunting skills, guile and rifles. 1000 years ago a similar thing would have happened in the shared habitat because every creature on earth shares its habitat, only then they would have hunted the gator with spears

If you have ever visited Seven Seas Lagoon, you will know there are picnic areas and sun bathing spots right along the shoreline, it is man made and designed for scenery, picnics and boating.

You also need to know that Seven Seas Lagoon is Directly connected to Bay Lake!!!

both are stocked with fish and fishing outings are done with boat hire.

There are also islands on both lakes which could harbour alligators.

Lake Buena Vista has also had sightings of Alligators over the years

My sister and family went last year (and are going back this july) there are signs near the water saying there are alligators in it and not to swim.

My parents had a villa there for their holidays a couple of years ago and came back from a day out to find 2 in the back garden. 1 laid sunbathing on a lounger, the other floating about in the pool!

Had to call someone to move them.

Difficult one to police, there can be many arguments around this one, would it be the same pay out for a bolt of lightening, or a thug with a gun, what about a bee sting ??

and don't laugh, a man died in Florida due to a bee sting not too long ago

it is far too early in the day for dictating what is going to happen, the full story is not even out

Tragic though this event is,,,,,

I think it would be interesting to find out how many none captive alligator attacks occur per head of population in the USA and compare it to the amount of alligator attack that occur per head of population in managed environments .....

I'm sure it would help put a perspective on the inherent risks that come with supplying the public's demand for entertainment of this kind....

I don't think shooting the alligator will achieve anything, won't bring the child back and won't stop further attacks

No you cant shoot it,it was as they say just doing what an alligator does

I can just imagine you holding back the armed policeman as the alligator drags yours screaming terrified child back into the lake where it will drown it and dismember it. "Let it go, it's nature's way"..

You've changed the reality though.

The child's already gone along with alligator, finding the alligator now and shooting it will achieve nothing!.

Nobody had a gun when the attack happened, so your question is irrelevant

It will achieve it not happening again"

Only to that child and by that alligator. If they ever find it.

"In Florida its not uncommon to find one hanging about in your swimming pool. The place is infested with them.

When I was in Mexico you didn't hang about in the evening by the lagoons for this very reason.

Shooting it won't do any good trap it and move it deep into the Everglades.

I think you'll find its the humans that have infested the alligator's habitat.

Have you had a coffee yet?

Not really sure why I need to have a coffee? It's a valid point. Humans infest animal habitat because they want to live their then get shitty when the animal's want to still live there as well and call them the nuisance. It's like me setting up home in your living room then getting annoyed when you want to come in and use it.

So where is the humans habitat or terratory? if you think about we as a species no longer add anything to this planet just take and kill , so yes where is our habitat "

So stop walking now so as not to step on a bug,you are in its territory...what a stupid comment you have just made

That's just silly, you wouldnt need any armed police to get your child if it was alive and screaming, any parent would risk its own life for its child

But once somebody is dead how is killing the animal going to change what has happened?

It won't stop it happening again because if you kill that one animal there are hundreds more out there, should we just kill them all?

They always try and kill the one that attacked the human just in case it gets a taste for people and comes back for more. That goes for all predators and is the reason why dogs that attack people are destroyed too.

I doubt an alligator is going to actively seek out a human because it had one last week, I think like most predator's it will just attract the first animal it see's next time it's hungry

Obviously I'm not expert on alligator behaviour but I'm pretty sure the next time it's hungry and different animal is in its path its not going to pass up that meal to go people searching

The story now emerging is the child was playing IN the water....despite signs warning against this. If this is true then you have a very real point!

Alligators wait where they know food will be. It could be months but they don't mind. If they have had a meal from that spot they will come back to it again.

Tut tut tut, where have you spent all your life...

There are two ways to disable an alligator, Mr Bond.

One way is to take a pencil and stick it in the pressure point above its eye.

The other way is twice as simple. Just stick your hand in it's mouth and pull out all it's teeth.

Not saying it isn't an awfully tragic event and one I wouldn't wish on anyone but the disparity is blinding.

Florida is well known for its alligator population....it is one of the draws of the area, they even have a park where you can see captive gators being fed. Perhaps that is the problem. People become complacent and expect them to only exist in exhibits?

What point are you trying to make here? Don't leave the house?

Every day we go out and do a risk assessment over every step we take. The family were in a location where their own risk assessment would lead them to assume that they were safe from attack from dangerous predators. I have been to Florida and been up close and almost personal with gators, both captive and in the wild. Where this family were, they and countless others would assume that were safe.

This was not a golf course with lakes, lagoons, gators and water moccasins, it is a family resort.

This was not a golf course with lakes, lagoons, gators and water moccasins, it is a family resort. "

An animal expert was on Fox news saying its mating season and males will travel miles across land searching for females , while i am sure they try to keep the resort as alligator free as possible its known that any stretch of water in florida may contain alligators , pools , lakes , inlets , i have seen one in a ditch at the side of the road before.

even animals as small (and smaller) as jerbils are territorial. If you stray into another another animals territory you have to expect consequences. The gator knows not to stray into bigger gators territory, it strayed into human territory so now it has to die.

In all fairness , before disney ( pre 1970 ) it was most likely the alligators territory , all orlando was back then was a farming community with a mass of lakes and orange groves

Alligator's were probably using that area for hunting and mating hundreds of thousands of years before humans ever even evolved

As humans evolved and branched out they expanded into areas never been used before by us

But they were used by other animals, other animals have been calling these areas home for many years, building a hotel on that area does not make it our territory, alligator's do not understand that

Same as the shark last week didn't understand humans are claiming areas of water now

Animals that have been using areas for thousands of years simply do not understand .....this is ours now keep out

Last time I looked, most 2 year olds don't read very well

Well if you saw a sign saying do not enter the water, surely you'd make sure your child did not go in the water.

Your opening a can of worms there, don't you remember the gorilla thread

The gorilla case may be abit different tho as you wouldnt expect to be able to get into that enclosure, were as open water?? Bit different id say but thats just my opinion. If i was walking by a main road i wouldnt let go of my child...there dosent need to be a sign telling me not to enter the road tho

Did the alligator not come onto land and take the child?

As I said earlier I've been at work all day so not seen the news but I heard while at work the family was having a picnic and the alligator came on land and snatched the child dragging him into the river before the family could save him??

From what i read on the Sky News App the child was in the water when theres a sign saying do not go in the water. The resort place released a statement saying theres a sign saying do not enter the water. But i suppose the media always twist things aswell so who knows"

The signs say now swimming but warn that that is due to a steep drop off rather than a risk of alligators

We aren't doing what we like with it, we are negating the risk to other human beings by ridding the area of a very dangerous predator. Alligators have a very different brain and nervous system to humans. You cannot put your human thoughts and judgment and beliefs onto an animal that hasn't evolved much since prehistoric times.

You don't reason with alligators

In all honesty, while i think this is an absolute tragedy, it does seem to ne pretty much unavoidable. Alligators are in their natural territory, Disney patrol the lake and remove alligators once they reach a certain maturity - what more could they do?

There's less than a death a year due to alligators in Florida and this has probably only made global headlines due to it being a child in a disney resort

Yes it was all about awareness and if the parents had not known nothing about the gators in that area it was a tragedy waiting to happen if not to them then someone else sorry for the parents and the little girl, some years back I read a paperback called Aligator fictional the story itself as the gator depicted inside was enormous thou I have seen massive gators on film footage before in africa on sand banks but the one in the book was in the everglades and it certainly made the hair stand up on the back of your neck if you ever read that book before going there or any similar book you would be more alert in such places pity they don,t have more awareness programmes put in place to warn people before hand I wonder if disney will now?

When I was in Mexico you didn't hang about in the evening by the lagoons for this very reason.

Not really sure why I need to have a coffee? It's a valid point. Humans infest animal habitat because they want to live their then get shitty when the animal's want to still live there as well and call them the nuisance. So where is the humans habitat or terratory? if you think about we as a species no longer add anything to this planet just take and kill , so yes where is our habitat

"It's a sad state of affairs when signs replace common sense. You're in Florida, near water, hmmmm I wonder where the infamous Floridan alligator's like to hang out?!

You can't live your life by what signs are or are not present.

The other thinking is "you're in disney land, surely they make sure its safe".

Thats such an ingrained way of thinking most people drom areas without dangerous wildlife wouldnt even think about it.

I don't know anything about the resort or the area. But if I was staying in a Disney hotel with a lagoon and little beach at the side as shown in pics in the news, I would never think of alligators being a risk.
