Has anybody else made a job change decision that has made them financially worse off but had a positive experience?

I have just decided to step down from management in order to gain new development and growth opportunities that I could possibly move into another position in a years time, however this is within my current work force so no doubt there will be whispers/gossip so if you have done this how did you deal with it?

I know I am not happy within my current role, so how did you handle it? And was it the best decision you made? And yes I only made this decision today so feeling kinda raw and apprehensive x

I moved country and job three times, totally different career each time. Each was because I was not happy and wanted more for myself and my family. Not more money, more quality of life ...I think you make your decision and then you believe it was the best decision you made, how could you know otherwise. I just make a decision and go with it, no overthinking.

Yes. I was a telecoms engineer for twenty five years and decided to retrain as an electrician. It meant a steady good wage was replaced by sporadic income for a few years but it was the best decision I ever made. I love what I do now and I'm well known enough to not worry too much if I have a dry period. I just spend more time in the gym.

Did this three years ago.

Had a well paid management role for a company that I was not at all happy in.

Left without another job to go to as I knew if I was still working I wouldn't put my heart and soul into finding a new role and would keep drifting along.

Was bored to tears at home job hunting within a week so took a job driving a grocery delivery van on a third the money I used to earn but figured it would keep my mind occupied and the hours meant I would be available for interviews when needed.

Loved the company. The people, the ethos, the standards, everything. So stuck with it and got onto a management development course, moved house for a promotion, moved again for another and now earn more than I used to and for a company I love.

3 years for start to finish and best thing I ever did.

Thank you, I guess I am just feeling a bit emotional as I was deliberating over the weekend and last night it was a NO I'm not doing it, until this morning when I sat down and thought fuck it, I'm not happy so take a chance but now I've got the wobblies again x

Yes, a long time ago I changed roles within the company I then worked for to go from managerial to a more technical role but with no team as such. I enjoyed the new challenge and it suited me.

And a few years ago I changed jobs to a different sector entirely. It was risky and I wasn't sure if I would like it. I had to work my way back up the ladder, but it's far more rewarding and I honestly haven't regretted it one bit. If you aren't happy, you have nothing to lose. And the gossip soon moves on. I know lots of people who've moved roles and really enjoy what they do now. You spend a lot if your waking hours at work, so it's important to be happy. As the saying goes, a change is as good as a rest. Good luck and hope it goes well. X

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I moved jobs, took a reduction in pay, but enjoy the job a lot more. I am now going for promotion (fingers crossed) so will finally make up the pay difference.

Yes I have, I recently left a high stress well paid job and started lecturing. Less money better work life balance and more job satisfaction.

I have not regretted it for a second. well only when trying to get my asisgnments finished for my Qualifications.

I'm really unhappy in my job. So over the weekend Marc and I talked it out and I gave my notice today. I'm done being unhappy every day when I go to work. I'll find something I enjoy.

It has to be a decision you are ultimately happy with, but I thought it over for myself and my happiness is worth more to me than the money.

I left ( Mrs) a very well paid but stressful job in January to look after my children and actually see them! 6 months on best decision ever.

I'm a big believer in you only regret things you don't do.

Same here, but as I am single and only have myself to rely on, then I took a step back and thought, money is not a factor in life for me, so thank you Courtney for delivering it home, I was just having a bit of a wobble x

It's a great feeling when you hand your notice in from a job/company your not happy in.

I have a three day rule where if I drive to work 3 consecutive days not looking forward to it then I get another job. It's never let me down and once istart hating my job I'm out of there.

Being nervous is common and expected. Being unhappy should never be accepted as part of a job.

You've done the right thing

It's natural that you'll be nervous. I know I'm only too lucky to have Marc. Just believe in yourself and that your happiness will bring what is best for you. I'm sure it will turn out great.

I work for the NHS and have moved about within them for years, I moved to the west midlands with my job because I wanted to go into community work and there was better opportunities here as I lived out in the sticks so there were limited people back home

It was a big move as I have three kids and it ment moving me and them away from our family and friends but I feel it was the right move as there is so much more available round here

I would never take a pay cut though when I move about within the company its always equal pay or better

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Yes, I gave up an extremely well paid leadership role and became self employed.

I have had more chances to learn new things, work in different areas and have time off but financially it has been difficult at times. I have learnt more about myself in that time and had the time to become a swingy thingy, which I could never have done working as I was back then.

I would say if your not happy in your current job role, go for something that you will be happy in even if theres financial implications, (providing you can still afford to live)

My only similar experience was my first job, i was there for years and loved aspects of it, but certain people made it a nightmare to be there. Resulting in depression. Getting out of there was the best thing I did despite financial struggles for a while
