Grandkids

We just don't get the way grandparents lavish all this over the top attention and money on their grandkids.

Some will even move from one end of the country to the other,even to another country,just to be near them.

Notice its not to be with THEIR children but with their grandkids.

Whats it all about,is it a sort of second chance to make amends for all the shortcomings with their own kids?

Any ideas?

We retire in a couple of years and are off to live abroad. When the grand kids eventually come along if they want to see us they will know where we are and if they don't there is always Skype

I dont think its healthy for anyone to "lavish" children or grandchildren. I partly agree with the last part of what you wrote traceandric about shortcomings as parents.

But as far as spending more time with them and doing things in general it could be that when there children where young that they didnt have time or money to do the things they wanted to. They probley are in a better position now than they where then.

As a mother I know i have far more tolerance and patience now im older than i did when my son was young.

I hope to be a grandparent someday and yes im sure i will treat them and spoil them somewhat but only in what i call a healthy way

We have a grandson... and love the little fella to death.. He's a Mini Me lol.. Whats not to love eh pmsl

we'd both happily lavish anything on him... so long as it has no ill affects. Why?? Cause we can lol... Makes us happy, makes him happy... did the same with our daughter, she's educated, balanced, happy and a damn good mum....

Not so sure we'd move around to be with as such... but we'd be gutted if they left the area...

As the sign says in my parents kitchen "If we'd known grandkids would be this much fun, we'd have had them first"

I know its got nothing to do with any short comings... We did the same with our daughter. If your able to make them happy in some way.. why not!

I agree that it may be that Grandparents have more time and money to do things with the grandchildren than they did with their own

Also as my mum told me when ours were younger........its really lovely to have them and do things with them but its great to be able to give them back at the end of the day

Would agree with the 'handing back' lol. Yes it's great having grandkids but to spoil them rotten is asking for trouble further down the line in my opinion. Closing the hatches now!

Maybe cause they got the money and don't feel like lavishing on themselves....would prefer to get that happy look from their grand kids...:D

Pity their kids and in-laws though....now they'll have to deal with possible spoiled kids....:D

Some when they have grandchildren then to allow and buy stuff they never did as a parent...:D

Nah, its the grandparents job to spoil them rotten. Mine did, and I think I turned out ok.

We sometimes see those Antique Auction programes on TV.

Some,poor as a church mouse, little old dear will put a family heirloom up for auction that was her great,great grandmothers.

When asked what she's going to do with the money its nearly always "give it to the grandkids".

Take yourself off on a cruise ffs, bollox to the grandkids,they've got a lifetime to earn their own cash.

Let their parents take care of 'em.

So..... What is wrong with spending on grandchildren? Just like the swing scene, life in general is all about doing things that please you and harm no one else. If that means enjoying doing things for your grandchildren, so be it!

We have a grandson and another one on the way. We can afford to get them things that perhaps their parents can't, because of all calls on their wages. We can still afford to do what we want, so where is the harm? Really can't understand the "fuck em" attitude

When we are eventually blessed with them our grandkids will get everything and anything we can get them but, and here's the but they will have to come see us to get it.

Thats not being selfish but we have done our best by our kids and now want to live our lives for us. We are going to live abroad and there will always be a place for family who want to visit and when they do we will spoil spoil spoil but in the times between it's our time and we intend making the most of it.

Our parents lavish gifts on our children, and my mother admits it's because now she can afford to do it, but when I was little she couldn't so her parents spoilt me, and she spoils mine.

They see my little one almost daily and although they would love a life in the sun they will never leave us, their choice not mine trust me lol.

My mother had a turn when we wanted to move a mile and a half up the road claiming it was too far lol !

We have a friend thinks like that with her family, lovely sentiment but we moved miles away from home when we married so seeing family once or twice a year is not something new to us or our kids, and long may that continue

We're talking from personal family experience.

Where grandparents,who aren't well off by any means,use their savings to buy their grandson a £4,000 BMW for his first car.

He could have afforded to buy himself a small hatchback and insure it but didn't want one.

However,he couldn't afford to buy a BMW and insurance,awwww bless.

So they skint themselves to cater for his street cred, GRRRRRRR!

That was a loan a few years ago,they haven't had a penny back and are still bailing him out,even though he has a decent job.
