Help with my new lens

Hi everyone. ..

Any one in the East Midlands area. ...

Any amateur photographers here?

I have bought an expensive new lens for my Canon camera and can't take clear photos with it.

I know it's something I am doing wrong. .. I took some fashion pics of the wife last week and I deleted them all because they were blurred...

Any help would be appreciated. .

Could be many things. Auto focus isnt always your friend though you may need to calibrate the new one xx

Hi. As said above we will need to know lens and body.

That said if it's an EF mount lens on an EF body with no adaptor rings it should just work.

Blurry inferrs misalignment or focus issue. Assume you've focused it manually?

If you close the iris right down and shoot in high brightness does it improve?

Are the exposed glass elements clean? Including the mirror on the DSLR. Ps. Don't clean this unless you really really really have to.

Check it's not stuck on manual focus and that any dials or adjustments have been made. Try setting it on a tripod and focus at a distinct object about 10 feet away and calibrate your camera so the object is in focus.

If it's a mechanical lense (I.e. it has a motor); it will have a switch between manual and auto focus (on my nikon this is AF/M not sure what it is on a canon).

If it's manual only you will have to adjust the focus with the ring around the unit. If the image through the view finder is sharp but the picture is blurred, this could be a number of reasons. With the most probable, camera shake, is the uni now heavier? Do you use a tripod?

Is it a second party lens like tamron or sigma. You really have to check of its compatible with the camera you have on the lens manufacturers website. The last lens I bought was tamron 90mm and I have to be sure I got the correct one as there is no drive for auto focus in some DSLR's. Can you get a clear focus in manual ? If not then it's probably a fake

Sounds like the lens connections are not compatible with the connections on the camera body for auto focus etc.

Does it say anything in the instructions?

Just because it has a Canon bayonet, doesn't necessarily mean it has compatible electronics .

Just a silly point; (assuming it's new) some electronics connections have a thin plastic film over them in the packaging to protect them in transit . Check the electronic connections on the lens bayonet for a film that must be removed before first use .

Ok assuming that you have it set to auto focus on the centre spot. Did you give it time to focus? Hold down shutter part way to auto focus.

Was the camera hand held at the time? Low light conditions, with a shutter speed lower than 60 could have resulted in camera shake. Did you use a flash gun?

Too high an iso or was that on auto too?

What was the aperture? Some lenses are very soft wide open. ( Very low aperture) ( very soft is blurry indistinct)

What lighting?

Sorry for lots of questions but thete ate many things that could cause blurry out of focus shots

Have you got the cameras latest firmware, maybe the camera doesn't support the new lens. Check on Canons website, the updated firmware can't hurt to have anyway

Try gently cleaning the contact of the lens with a cloth and some meths. Could be a bit grubby.
