What to take to a barbecue

So my boss invited me to a barbecue with her family at their home.

I don't want to show up empty handed. Any suggestions??

Drinks...alcoholic or soft drinks.

Maybe ask her if she would like you to bring some food. She may say no, but at least she will know that you are considerate.

Still bring drinks of some kind, though.

It depends on how much effort you want to put into it. You could make a nice side dish, like a fruit salad, or a potato or macaroni salad. If you'd rather buy something then beer/wine is usually a good choice. Flowers might be a nice touch, too.

If I'm doing a barbeque, I've usually got the meats and the salad and some sort of bread covered. If people ask, I can't usually be arsed to make a dessert so they could bringf one of those or nibbles. Booze is always gratefully recieved.

I'd be a bit annoyed if anyone brought meat - I would have already planned (and probably at least started cooking) the meat by the time people got there. Bringing your own meat suggests that you think I'm some kind of short order cook.

Just ask.

I would have thought dessert or drinks would be your best bet though.

Has anyone ever driven into Knowsley on the M62? Believe it or not the boundary sign says "Welcome to Knowsley. The home of Lambrini". I thought it was a piss take but it's a real sign.....

On a serious note...to the BBQ...if it's a "company" do some beer and some salad type stuff. Not meat as that should be provided.

Six close friends and six random strangers from the pub in town, each bringing plenty of alcohol after having already started drinking hours earlier.

Barbecues are about socialising and what better way than to bring lots of new people to mix with and make new friends, with enough alcohol to lower inhibitions and make people do things they wouldn't normally do. The host will remember you for future barbecues, for sure!

Try this, a South African BBQ snack.

Take some icing (glacier) cherries and some bacon. Wrap each Cherry individually in bacon then impale a row of them on a wooden Skewer. BBQ to perfection.

Tastes much better than it sounds as the sweetness of the cherry Contrasts with the saltiness of the bacon.

That's an interesting viewpoint I'd not thought of. Personally I would talk to the host and offer to bring meat as that can be pricey. I wouldn't just turn up with it though.

Always take some of what you want to drink though. In case they don't have it and to show that you're not intending to fleece them.

Make up a gallon of rum punch and take the fruit to put in it. Ask if she has a punch bowl,if not,take pretty throw away cups.

Plonker! I meant for pudding! although if you wrap glazed doughnuts in tin foil and pop them on they go all crispy and caramelised and are scrummy
